I remember the first time I tried to learn English. It was a daunting task, to say the least. The language seemed so foreign and unfamiliar to me. I struggled with pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. But despite the difficulties, I was determined to master English.
I would spend hours listening to English songs and watching movies without subtitles. I would try to imitate the accents and intonations of native speakers, even though I often ended up sounding ridiculous. I would read English books and newspapers, looking up every word I didn't understand in the dictionary. It was a slow and painful process, but I was willing to put in the effort.
As time went on, my English gradually improved. I could hold basic conversations and understand simple texts. But I knew I still had a long way to go. So I decided to take a leap of faith and enroll in an English course at a local university.
The course was intense and demanding. We had to write essays, give presentations, and participate in group discussions. It was a challenge for someone like me, who
was not used to speaking in public or expressing my
thoughts in a foreign language. But I persevered, pushing myself out of my comfort zone and embracing the opportunity to learn.
One of the most valuable lessons I learned from my English course was the importance of practice. We were encouraged to speak English as much as possible, both
inside and outside the classroom. We would engage in role-plays, debates, and conversations with our classmates. It was through these interactions that I gained confidence in my speaking abilities and learned to think in English.
Another aspect of learning English that I found particularly challenging was understanding idioms and slang. English is filled with expressions and phrases that are not always literal. It took me a while to grasp their meanings and use them appropriately in conversations. But once I did,
it felt like I had unlocked a whole new level of fluency.
Learning English has been a journey of ups and downs, successes and failures. There were times when I felt frustrated and wanted to give up. But I reminded myself of the reasons why I started learning English in the first place – to broaden my horizons, communicate with people from different cultures, and pursue academic and professional opportunities.
Now, as a professor, I often find myself reflecting on my own experiences with learning English. I understand the struggles and frustrations that my students face, and I try my best to support and encourage them. I know that learning a language is not easy, but I also know that with perseverance and determination, it is possible to overcome any obstacles.
So, to all the language learners out there, I say:
don't be discouraged by the difficulties you encounter. Embrace them as opportunities for growth and improvement.
Keep pushing yourself, keep practicing, and never stop learning.。
