If we were asked exactly what we were doing a year ago, we should probably have to say that we could not remember. But if we had kept a book and written in it an account of what we did each day, we should be able to give an answer to the question.
It is the same in history. Many things have been forgotten because we do not have any written account of them. Sometimes men did keep a record of the most important happenings in their country, but often it was destroyed by fire or in a war. Sometimes there was never any written record at all because the people of that time and place did not know how to write. For example, we know a great deal about the people who lived in China 4,000 years ago, because they could write and leave written records for those who lived after them. But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in central Africa, because they had not learned to write.
Sometimes, of course, even if the people cannot write, they may know something of the past. They have heard about it from older people, and often songs and dances and stories have been made about the most important happenings, and those have been sung and acted and told for many generations, for most people are proud to tell what their fathers did in the past. This we may call “remembered history”. Some of it has now been written into history. It is not so exact or so valuable to us as written history is, because words are much more easily changed when used again and again in speech than when copied in writing. But where there are no written records, such spoken stories are often very helpful.
21.Which of the following ideas is NOT talked about in the passage ?
A.“ Remembered history”, compared with written history, is less reliable
B. Written records of the past play a most important part in our learning of the human history.
C. Where there are no written records, there is no history.
D. A written account of our daily activities helps us to answer some questions.
22.“Remembered history” is regarded as valuable only when _________.
A. it is written down
B. there is no written account
C. it proves to be true
D. people are interested in it
23. The passage suggests that we could have learned much more about our past than we do now if
our ancestors had _________.
A. made more songs and dances.
B. kept a written record of every past event
C. not burnt their written records in wars
D. told exact stories of the most important happenings
B
Before I spoke to his school, Matt was waiting for me. He satin his wheelchair barelyable to move. As soon as he saw me he started smiling. He could not talk but I pretended the sharks were eating his cereal and his laugh melted the hearts of everyone walking by.
One of the teachers told me that he was actually very smart, he just could not control his muscles due to a childhood disease. He was happy and very popular at his school-his 'parents' love and encouragement made all the difference. On the contrary—at a book signing session, I met a girl by the name of Anne. She walked up with her mom with a bright smile.
Anne asked about my book with a slur(含糊地发音)in her speech indicating a slight head-injury. I told her about it and she smiled the whole time and asked me to sign one for her. I did.
Five minutes later, I heard a voice from Anne's father, "you know you will not under- stand the book. You can't read well enough. You aren't smart enough." He said it so loudly that people were staring in their direction. She was absolutely crushed and her bright smile was now replaced with a look of total despair. He pried the book from her and brought it back to me and asked me to take it back. I asked him if he would allow me to purchase the book for Anne. He said no with a heartless response. I thought back to Matt. He could not speak, walk, run or play but was actually very happy and even doing well in school because of the love and encouragement of his parents. Anne on the other hand had a slight learning problem and may never know happiness of success because of a stern(苛刻的) father.
What kind of parent are you? The truth is that whatever you are telling your kids- makes the difference between their success or failure in life.
24. What is Matt's problem?
A. He is blind.
B. He isn't smart enough .
C. He suffers a muscles' disease.
D. He can't speak and read.
25. Compared with Anne, Matt is lucky because
A. his parents are rich
B. his parents love and encourage him
C. his disability is not serious
D. the author feels sympathy for him
26. Hearing her father's words, Anne felt __
A. light-hearted
B. doubtful
C. cautious
D. heart-broken
27. What does the author probably do? -
A. A writer.
B. A teacher.
