想自己在家幫小孩加強英文的家長，我常常鼓勵他們用故事的方式讓孩子接觸英文，一來是家長想要讓孩子在家乖乖的上英文，通常都會有點困難；二來是在說故事的過程中，不但可以培養親子感情，更可以教孩子一些價值觀，其實是一舉兩得。

在這個過程中，小朋友只要不排斥聽英文故事、讀英文故事，就是一個很好的開始怎麼開始?用英文來聽故事的一大要點是：剛開始不要選擇英文太多的故事書。

如果英文太長、太難，小朋友很快就會失去興趣，因為他們不但不懂，也無從猜起。

其實，「猜意思」在語言學習過程中是很重要的一部分，小朋友會自己去猜測字的涵義，更進而去做歸納的動作，記下字的意思。

因此，在學習的初期，可以找一些字少且有清楚圖片說明的故事書，讓孩子可以看圖猜意思，或者是在與孩子一起閱讀的時候，適時的指出圖片引導，讓孩子在剛開始接觸英文書時，就能懂意思，增加他們學習的成就感，這是很重要的一步。

例如在看“Good Night Gorilla”(Peggy Rathmann)這本幾乎沒有文字的繪本時，大人在說“Good Night, Gorilla”的同時，孩子的注意力可能是在繪本插圖中的右上方、飄在空中的一個小小氣球，所以急著要翻到下一頁，看看氣球要飛到哪裡去，若是爸爸媽媽們只是急著要講自己的故事，就會讓孩子失去自己去「閱讀」這本書的機會了。

陪著孩子閱讀時，要給孩子時間和空間，有時候會因此在其中找到更多樂趣。

無字書中因為沒有文字的解說輔助，書中的繪圖大都非常具有特色，可以吸引讀者的注意力，爸爸媽媽不妨利用無字書引導孩子去欣賞插圖，您會發現從孩子眼中看世界，和大人的角度不同。
