Basketball is a young game. In the year of 1891, a fam ous college was having some trouble with its boy students. The weather was bad. They couldn’t play outside. So they were unhappy.
Sometimes they even got into fights. Finally, some teachers asked Dr. Naisimth to invent a game so that the students might have something to play in doors. Dr. Naisimth thought for a few days and invented a kind of ball game. It was a fast, exciting game with much moving and passing of the ball. It was played between two teams. In order to make a score, the ball had to be thrown into a basket ten feet above the floor on the wall. At first, Dr. Naisimth had planned to have the ball thrown into a box. As he couldn't find boxes of the right size, he had to use fruit basket instead. That is how the game got its name basketball. The history of this game is over 100 years.

Nobody knows who invented the pencil or when it was invented. A Swiss (瑞士人)described a pencil in a book in 1565. He said it was a piece of wood with lead(铅)inside it . Pencils weren’t popular, and people continued to write with pens. In 1795,someone started making pencils from graphite(石墨) and they became very popular. Today, people make pencils in the same way. They make the graphite into the shape of a stick, and then they put it inside a piece of wood. One pencil can make a line as long as 55 kilometers. When people first wrote with pens , they had to put the penpoint into ink after every few letters. Later someone invented a fountain pen(自来水笔) and this kind of pen could hold ink inside. A fountain pen can write several pages before you have to fill it agai n.
Two brothers, Ladislao and Georg Biro, invented the ballpoint pen(圆珠笔)that we use today. They left their country Hungary and started producing ballpoint pens in England in 1943 during World War II. Later, a French company called Bic bought the Biro’s company. Someone calls ballpoint pens bic os. Australians call them biros. Whatever we call them, we use them every day.

China is the home of tea, which has more than 4000 years of history. People all over China drink tea daily. Of the three main drinks—tea, coffee and cocoa, tea is drunk by the largest number of people in the world. Tea from China, along with silk and porcelain (瓷器),began to be known by the world over a thousand years ago and has been an important Chinese export (出口商品) since then.
The world for tea in different languages came from the Chinese character, “cha”. The English word, “tea”, sounds similar to the pronunciation of it in Xiamen, Fujian Province. The Russians call it “chai’i”,
which sounds like “chaye”(tea leaves) as it is pronounced in northern China. The Japanese character
for tea is written exactly the same as it is in Chinese, though it is pronounced a little differently.
Tea leaves are produced mainly in the south of China, because of the mild (温和的)climate
(气候)and rich soil (土壤) there. Longjing , Pu’er, Wulong and Tieguanyin are all famous tea.
They’re produced in the provinces of Zhejiang, Yunnan and Fujian.
Over the past centuries, Chinese people have developed their unique (独特的)tea culture, which
includes tea planting, tea-leaf picking, tea making, tea drinking, and so on. Tea is also
a popular theme which is often mentioned in dances, songs, poems and novels.
