Part II Reading ComprehensionDirections: In this part there are four passages, each followed by five questions or unfinished statements. For each of them, there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.
Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that men and animals possess, if they are properly used. If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children would play it until their hands were burnt away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear did not, a child would burn itself again and again, because fear would not warn it to keep away from the fire that had burn it before. A really fearless soldier—and some do exist—is not a good soldier because he is soon killed; and a dead soldier is of no use
to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which men and animals might soon die out. In our first sentence we suggested that fear ought to be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. Even in your house you are not absolutely safe: an airplane may crash on your house, or ants may eat away some of the beams in your roof so that the latter falls on you, or you may get cancer! The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but instead to use fear as your servant and guide. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take. In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you; fear warns you, you jump out of the way, and all is well. In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to avoid the danger. For example, you cannot prevent an airplane crashing onto your house. In this case, fear has given you its warning; you have examined it and decided on your course, of action, so fear of this particular danger is no longer of any use to you, and you have to try to overcome it.
11.Children would play with fire until their hands were burnt away if ______.
A.they were given no warning beforehand
B.they had never burnt themselves
C.they had no sense of pain
D.they were fearful of the fire

A.is of little use to the army
B.is without equal
C.is nothing but a dead soldier
D.easily gets killed in a battle

13.Fear should be used properly because ______.
A.an airplane may crash on your house
B.you may get cancer
C.fear can only be used as a servant and guide
D.men are now letting fear rule them too much

14.People sometimes succeed in timely avoiding danger because ______.
A.they have gained experience
B.they jump out of the way in time
C.they are calm in face of danger
D.they are warned of the danger and can take quick action

15.Implied but not stated: ______.
A.Fear is always something helpful
B.Too much fear is harmful
C.Fear ought to be used as a servant and guide
D.Fear is something unprofitable

We use both words and gestures to express our feelings, but the problem is that these words and gestures can be understood in different ways. It is true that a smile means the same thing in any language. So does laughter or crying. There are also a number of striking similarities in the way different animals show the same feelings. Dogs, tigers and humans, for example, often show their teeth when they axe angry. This is probably because they are born with those behavior patterns. Fear is another emotion that is shown in much the same way all over the world. In Chinese and in English literature, a phrase like “he went pale and begin to tremble” suggests that the man is either very afraid or he has just got a very big shock. However, “he opened his eyes wide”is used to suggest anger in Chinese whereas in English it means surprise. In Chinese surprise can be described in a phrase like “they stretched out their tongues!” .Sticking out your tongue in English is an insulting gesture or expresses strong dislike. Even in the same culture, people differ in ability to understand and express feelings. Experiments in America have shown that women are usually better than men at recognizing fear, anger, love and happiness on people’s faces. Other studies show that older people usually find it easier to recognize or understand body language than younger people do.
16.According to the passage, ______.
A.we can hardly understand what people’s gestures mean
B.we can not often be sure what people mean when they describe their feelings in words or gestures
C.words can be better understand by older people
D.gestures can be understand by most of the people while words can not

B选项的依据句就是文章的第一句话“We use both words and gestures to express our feelings, but the problem is that these words and gestures can be understood in different ways.”

17.People’s facial expressions may be misunderstood because ______.
A.people of different ages may have different understanding
B.people have different cultures
C.people of different sex may understand a gesture in a different way
D.people of different countries speak different languages

18.In the same culture, ______.
A.people have different ability to understand and express feelings
B.people may have the same understanding of something
C.people never fail to understand each other
D.people are equally intelligent
解析:从常识判断,B,C和D选项的内容与现实生活不符,属于没有道理的说法;A选项的依据句就是最后一段的第一句话“Even in the same culture, people differ in ability to understand and express feelings.”
19.From this passage, we can conclude ______.
A.words are used as frequently as gestures
B.words are often found difficult to understand
C.words and gestures are both used in expressing feelings
D.gestures are more efficiently used than words
解析:文章的第一句话就是C选项的意思“We use both words and gestures to express our feelings,”而其他选项的内容在文章没有依据,说法本身与现实也不相符。

20.The best title for this passage may be ______.
A.Words and Feelings
B.Words, Gestures and Feelings
C.Gestures and Feelings
D.Culture and Understanding
解析:这是一道大意题,应该参考文章的主题句:第一个句子“We use both words and gestures to express our feelings, but the problem is that these words and gestures can be understood in different ways.”

Imagine a world in which children would be the rulers and could decide not only the outcome of each and every occurrence, but also dictate the very structure and form of the environment. In this world, a child’s wildest thoughts would become reality, limited only by the extent of his or her imagination. While such a world might sound both fantastic and frightening, at least from a logical, adult perspective, it does exist. What’s more, it has been in existence for some time and is populated by hundreds of thousands of children who spend hours within its boundaries experimenting and learning. This world is not real, at least not in the traditional sense, but exists within a computer and is generated by an educational programming language called LOGO. Unlike other computer languages and programs that are designed to test children and provide applications that formally dispense information, LOGO allows children, even preschool children, to be in total control. Children teach the computer to think and as a result develop and sharpen their own reasoning abilities.
21.In the imagined world______would restrict children’s wildest thoughts.
A.the limits of their imagination
B.the structure and form of the environment
C.the reality of life
D.the rules of the society
(In this world,a child’s wildest thoughts would become reality.limitedonly by the extent of his or her imagination.)

22.LOGO is______.
A.an educational testing program
B.a computer language
C.an information dispenser
D.an unreal world

23.Children are rulers______.
A.in the traditional sense
B.within the boundaries of LOGO’s world
C.with all computer languages and programs
D.in the adult world
LOGO allows children,even preschool children.to be intotal control说明孩子是rulers,再加上全篇谈论的是借助LOGO程序语言实现的虚拟世界,所以答案B正确。

24.LOGO is unique because______.
A.it is an educational program
B.it is in total control of human beings
C.it allows children to teach the computer to think
D.children use it
Unlike other computer languages and programs...和Children teach thecomputer to think…

25.The best title for this passage would be______.
A.Children Rule the World
B.Computer Languages
C.The Unreal World of the Child and LOGO
D.Children Learn Reasoning Using LOGO

The first ancient Olympics were held in 776 B.C. The games got their name from Olympia, the Greek city where they took place. Like the summer Olympics of today, the ancient Olympics were held every four years. Thousands of people from all over the Greek world came to watch. The main stadium held about 45,000 people. “We have accounts of visitors and pilgrims setting up tents all around the site”, Lisa Cerrato of Tufts University said. During the first Olympics, there was only one competition—a 200-meter race. But over time the games grew to include wrestling, chariot racing, boxing, and other sports. Women were not allowed to compete, but they had their own separate games. “The ancient athlete became celebrities(名人), just like today. They often lived the rest of their lives being treated
to free dinners”, Cerrato said. “City-states even tried to steal away each other’s athletes by offering them various awards”. The ancient Olympics existed until A.D. 393. But the modern Olympics are still going strong.
26.Where did the ancient Greeks hold their first Olympics?
A.In Athens.
B.In Olympics.
C.In a town.
D.In a state.

27.How did researchers know that ancient Greeks rushed to watch the Olympics?
A.Thousands of people came to watch.
B.The main stadium is still not big enough.
C.They have found the related record of events.
D.Many of them were visitors and pilgrims.
We have accounts of visitors and pilgrims setting up tents all around the site.

28.What did women do since they were not allowed to participate in the Olympics?
A.They stayed at home doing nothing.
B.They organized protests in the city.
C.They had their own games.
D.They set up tents around the site.
Women were not allowed to compete, but they had their own separate games.

29.The ancient athletes must have felt honored when they ______.
A.completed in a 200-meter race
B.wrestled with each other
C.read the accounts of the games
D.received the treatment of free dinners
解析:本题的依据句为:The ancient athlete became celebrities(名人),just like today. They often lived the rest of their lives being treated to free dinners.

30.It can be inferred from the fourth paragraph that ______.
A.the ancient athletes liked to celebrate their victories
B.free dinners were offered during the competition
C.city-states competed with each other to win the Olympics
D.awards were often stolen to honor the athletes
City-states even tried to steal away each other’s athletes by offering them various awards.

B.to use
C.used
D.using
