21.(6分)My husband and I wanted desperately the instant transformation from typical consumers to
eco-conscious people. We switched our light bulbs to CFL(compact fluorescent light)bulbs to conserve energy. We went about the house turning off lights and unplugging appliances that weren’t in use.But the rate of global warming exceeded our snail’s pace conversion to greenhood. So I pressed onward.
I decided to put veganism(素食主义)at the top of our agenda.Vegans refuse any animal flesh or commercial goods made from any animal byproducts such as milk or fats. All the family applauded this option except for my husband. Some kind of animal needed to sacrifice its dear life for his meal or it wash’t dinner.I cooked up a storm, struggling to prepare nutritious meals dominated by not-so-obvious vegan dishes like bean burritos and high-fiber vegetable stir-fry.It took a few days before he realized that he hadn’t bee n eating any meat.
“I feel like eating beef.”he announced. So that night,I took full advantage of a zucchini (一种南瓜),cut it into chunky(粗大的)pieces and cooked them. Then I covered them with spices. My beef-starved husband had some and a curious look crossed his face.
“Where’s the beef?”
“Living peacefully somewhere on an open plain where it belongs.”
“I knew it”he murmured.“You’ve surely made great contributions to the boom in cattle.”His taste buds were developed completely around the flavor of every kind of animal:cattle, pigs, deer, lamb, chickens and ducks.Converting him was like feeding grass to a lion.
I’m all for preserving our planet, but what good would it do to save the earth for tomorrow’s generation if today’s died of starvation? The next day,we went out for burgers.I was very careful to place the paper bag into our recycling bin.

23.(8分)Many of us have wondered what Earth is like beneath the surface. So have writers and scientists. In French novelist Jules Verne’s masterpiece Journey to the Center of the Earth, explorers go down to Earth’s center and discover amazing wonders.
But in real life, human beings haven’t even come close to the planet’s core (核心). The core is over 6,000 km down. The deepest hole ever created, according to the BBC, is the Kola Superdeep Borehole in Russia, which only goes 12.3 km down.
So how do we know about everything down below without any samples?
One good way to start is to think about the Earth’s density (密度), Simon Redfern of the University of Cambridge in the UK told the BBC.
“The density of the material on Earth’s surface is much lower than the average density of the whole Earth, so th at tells us there’s something that has greater density,” Redfern said.
The challenge is to find out which heavy materials the core is made of. And the main material scientists have found is iron. The idea is that when Earth formed 4.5 billion years ago, a lot of iron made its way down to the core, taking up about 80 percent of it. Today scientists are still working on finding out which other materials the core could be made up of.
You might also wonder how we know the size of the core. There’s a one-word answer: seismology (地震学).
When an earthquake happens, seismic stations around the world record the shockwaves it sends throughout the planet. It’s like hitting one side of the planet with a huge hammer and listening on the other side for the noise.
Early res earch found that some shockwaves, called “S-waves”, went missing. S-waves can only travel through solid
material, but not through liquid, so they must have found something molten in Earth’s center. By following the S-waves’ paths, scientists found out that rocks became liquid around 3,000 km down.
There are still many questions about the Earth’s core to answer. But the study of the dark world below isn’t just for scientists’ curiosity.
The movement of Earth’s molten iron core builds up a powerful magnetic (有磁力的) field. It protects us from radiation from the sun and is needed for compasses and GPS systems to work.
So perhaps none of us will ever set eyes on the core, but it’s good to know it’s there.

B.show how much humans have discovered about Earth
C.paint a picture in our imagination of the dark world below
D.show humans’ deep interest in Earth’s center
2、We can learn from the article that “S-waves”.
A.are often used to predict earthquakes
B.cannot travel through liquid material
C.are the most noticeable shockwaves produced by earthquakes
D.can travel most rapidly at 3,000 kilometers below Earth’s surface
3、We can infer from the last three paragraphs that .
A.research into Earth’s core has hardly made any progress in recent years
B.improvements in GPS systems could help people find out more about Earth
C.Earth’s core helps to protect humans from harm
D.scientists are likely to reach Earth’s center within dozens of years
24.(8分)I’d have to say that the schemes to reduce staff absence and increase punctuality(准时) have been a big success. We’ve seen that s taff attendance levels have increased from 88% to 93%, and levels of punctuality have increased from 79% to 91%, which is fantastic. And the number of days that staff have taken off for sickness has dropped from an average of nine days per year to just five. There has also been a general increase in motivation at work, and we’ve seen output increase by at least 16% since this time last year.
So, what have we been doing to improve things? Well, for a start, we’ve been introducing a scheme so that employees get bonuses if company production targets and sales figures are met. And if things carry on as they are, all employees will have received a bonus by the end of next month. We’ve also introduced a system whereby employees and management set personal targets. Then, the individual employee receives a bonus if these targets are met. And to help
with punctuality, we’ve installed a new system that records exactly what time people are getting in and leaving the office. This has helped improve punctuality rates substantially.
Another initiative has been the installation of a games room for employees to use during mid-morning and lunch breaks. We’ve found that it’s a great way to motivate staff, giving them time to relax. As part of this, we’ve bought a ping pong table, a basketball hoop and a darts board. And by next week, the two table-football tables that we ordered last month will have arrived. Since opening the games room, staff have been using it constantly, especially the beds that we bought to allow staff to ha ve a short nap during the day. Along similar lines, we’ve also organized a number of teambuilding excursions.
1、Why does the author list some figures in Paragraph One?
A.To prove the plans work well
B.To show employees to be more punctual
C.To present the production grows obviously
D.To prove the increase of workers’ attendance
2、What have they done to help with punctuality?
A.They’ve set personal targets
B.They’ve weakened demands on employees
C.They’ve introduced a scheme to give employees bonuses
D.They’ve recorded workers’ coming and leaving by a new system
3、What has been most popular in the games room?
A.A ping pong table B.A darts board
C.A basketball hoop D.A nap bed
4、As readers, who may benefit most from this article?
A.Students B.Managers
C.Teachers D.Farmers
25.(10分)Scientists have long been interested in the impact of early-life experiences on adult behavior, studying the phenomenon in monkeys and people. But hardly any studies had been done in dogs.
Guide dogs presented a useful group to study for several reasons. First, at The Seeing Eye, guide dog school in America, many puppies(幼犬)are raised in a single location under fairly controlled conditions. Second, the dogs have a clear measure of success: Either they graduate from the program to become a working guide dog or they are released. And third, success as a guide dog isn’t easy; the dog must be willing and able to navigate a complex and
often-unpredictable environment while remaining attentive to its owner.
To gather information ab out the puppies’ early-life experiences, Emily Bray and a team of researchers at The Seeing Eye’s breeding center took video and closely observed 23 mothers and their 98 puppies for their first five weeks of life. “We wanted to know if we could separate the moms based on how they interacted with their puppies,” Bray said. “We recorded things like her nursing position, how much time she spent looking away from the puppies and how much time she spent in close proximity(临近)to her puppies or licking them.”
When the researchers tracked the puppies a couple of years down the line, they found that those with mothers that were more attentive were less likely to graduate from The Seeing Eye’s training program to become guide dogs. In particular, those dogs whose mothers nursed more often lying down, as opposed to sitting or standing up, were less likely to succeed.
“If a mother is lying on her stomach, the puppies basically have free access to milk, but if the mother is standing up, then the puppies have to work to ge t it,” said Bray. “It seems that you have to provide your kids with minor obstacles(障碍)that they can overcome for them to succeed later in life because, as we know, life as an adult involves obstacles.”
1、What does the second paragraph mainly discuss?
A.The steps in training guide dogs.
B.How the Seeing Eye came into being.
C.Why guide dogs are idea objects for study.
D.The various features of dogs at the Seeing Eye.
2、What did Bray and his team focus on in their study?
A.The diets of the puppies.
B.The body weights of the puppies.
C.The way moms reacted to their puppies.
D.The moms’ sensitiveness to surroundings.
3、Which puppies were more likely to become guide dogs?
A.Those with attractive mothers.
B.Those who were raised in a quiet place.
C.Those who were fed while lying down.
D.Those who were poorly attended by their mothers.
4、Which of the following sayings does Bran seem to believe in?
A.No sweet without sweat.
B.Failure is the mother of success.
C.Actions speak louder than words.
D.A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

29、 A recent survey shows most students rarely communicate with their teachers, and few students think it
Students’ communication with teachers can strengthen the bond and bridge the gap between teachers and students. Besides, sharing your problems and emotions will greatly help reduce the pressure on you and build up your confidence.
As for me, I always have a chat or a short conversation with my head teacher as well as teachers of other subjects, talking about my difficulty in study or emotional trouble. In this way, I can feel more confident and enjoy every single bit of school life. I hope I will do what I can to encourage and inspire more students to communicate with their teachers.。
