Gianni has a very special kind of memory. He explains in his own words: “It’s a kind of memory that is connected to what I see. It means that every idea I learn, everything I read, becomes a part of me. Normally, a person wh o doesn’t have this gift, and who hasn’t studied memory, tends to just forget things—even an entire book. Not me.” Gianni says that his “gift”, or special ability, he has memorized more than 250 books!
Memorizing over 250 books is surprising, but it’s not the only surprising thing about Gianni. He says that he can remember every detail of every day of his life. He also says that he can remember these details from the time he was less than one day old!
Researchers are now studying how memory and learning change the brain. Some research already shows that a great memory may not depend on the
right DNA only. It seems that everyone can remember more if they try. According to Dr. Malgaroli, “If you really need to use your brain to store some kind of information, you have this ability. It’s just a matter of exercise.” So, practice and exercising the brain can improve the memory!
The same idea is true for Gianni. His gift is just only part of his success. Since the age of 11, he’s been training his brain to remember more and more. He practices continuously to improve the power of his memory. Gianni thinks about memory, and works on it, all the time. He has even memorized a whole series of historical books!
Gianni believes his memory is mainly because of his very hard work. He even holds classes to teach others how to improve their memories. In his classes, Gianni shows people how to organize their memories and how to “remember to remember”. “I think the only problem with memory is the correct order. There’s a lot of brain space, so I think there are no limits.”29.Which of the following best describe Gianni?
A.He enjoys reading. B.He is a clever student.
C.He can remember well. D.He connects what he sees.
30.What can be learned from some research on memory?
A.Good memory comes from your gene.
B.Not everyone can have a good memory.
C.Practice can help build up your memory.
D.Brain is mainly used to store information.
31.Why did Gianni memorize books?
A.To study brain science. B.To develop his memory.
C.To improve his knowledge. D.To prepare for historical tests.
32.Which is the best title of the passage?
A.The Memory Man B.An Unforgettable Memory
C.Mental Athletes D.Special Power to remember
Camogli looks like any other small town on the Italian Coast. The little colored houses face the sea. But if you look carefully at the houses and other buildings, you’ll see something very interesting and very unusual.
Many things seem real but they are not. For examples, while some flowers die, ot hers can live for years. Why? It’s painted on the building. This art form is called trompel’oeil.
Trompel’oeil has been around for a long time. In the past, Camogli’s fishermen used to paint their houses in bright colors and unusual designs so that they could see their homes easily from water. Then in the 1700s, this style of art became a way to make small, simple buildings look grand and expensive.
Today, there are thousands of trompel’oeil houses in the town of Camogli. However, there are only a few artists that are available to paint them. Raffaella is one of them. She learned this special style of painting from her grandmother. Raffaella has not forgotten the history of Trompel’oeil either. She uses a mixture of old and new methods to create her work.
Be coming a good Trompel’oeil painter is difficult. It takes a lot of time and a lot of study. Raffaella has worked for 20 years to be able to paint stone so well that it looks real. Raffaella learned from other artists, not in a school. However, this has become a problem. There are now fewer artists. Therefore, there are fewer teachers and places for new painters to learn.
Another trompel’oeil painter Carlo only uses traditional-style paints and mixes them by hand. He does this for one reason: to protect the trompel’oeil tradition. “If we lose the trompel’oeil tradition, then very little of Camogli’s culture will remain. Of course you can go to museums, but that’s not much. Culture should be seen and enjoyed by everyone.” Said Carlo. Fortunately, in Camogli, y ou can still see trompel’oeil everywhere. But remember, in this fishing town, what you see may not be what you think it is. So don’t believe in your eyes!
33.What does the underlined “they” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The people in Camogli. B.The things on the buildings.
C.The houses in Camogli. D.The town by the sea.
34.Why did the fisherman start painting trompel’oeil?
A.Bright colors at that time are very popular.
B.The painting help to make their house larger.
C.They are proud of the Italian art and culture.
D.They wanted to see their homes from the sea.
35.How are Carlo’s paintings different from Raffaella’s?
A.They are more traditional. B.They can exist for a long time. C.They looks better and more real. D.They mixed modern and old methods.
36.What can be inferred from the passage about Camogli?
A.It’s a town for fishing business. B.It’s a countryside without culture. C.It’s a beautiful village on the coast. D.It’s a place with many native artists.
To most people, soil is just dirt. But soil is much more than this. There are four main things that make up soil—air, water, organic material and inorganic material. Soil is also home to many different animals and it is where plants grow.
Organic material are plant and animal matter that has decayed(腐坏) and becomes humus. Inorganic material does not come from plant or animal matter. It includes things such as sand, clay and minerals(矿物质). All these things are necessary to make soil. You can learn what soil is made of from the following picture.
There is one other thing that soil must have. Soil must have bacteria (细菌). Bacteria are tiny living things that help to break down organic matter. They turn the organic matter into useful materials that help make the soil rich. Beside s bacteria, soil’s best helpers are earthworms. Worms makes tunnels that help water and air get into the soil. They also break up hard soil and mix organic material and minerals around in it. Animals such as beetles and snails may live in the soil, too,
Different areas have soil in different colors. The color of soil depends on three things: The amount of iron in it; the amount of humus; and the kinds of minerals that are there. If the soil looks red, it has iron in it. The soil with lots of humus in it will take on a rich dark color.
Soil is important to all life, but it can be damaged or taken away. Soil can be eroded away by wind and rain. Planting trees and other plants can help prevent this. Also chemicals that kill insects pests and weeds can harm bacteria and worms in the soil. Farmers and gardeners often use more natural methods to look after their crops so that they won’t harm the soil. 37.What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
A.What soil is. B.How dirty soil is.
C.Where soil is from. D.How soil is different from dirt.
38.Which of the following belongs to organic matter?
A.Water and sand. B.Bacteria and minerals.
C.Humus and air. D.Dead plants and animals.
39.Why are bacteria important for soil?
A.They break down the soil and sand.
B.They make organic matter in soil useful for plants.
C.They do harm to those materials that are bad for soil.
D.They help the worms turn the soil so water can come to the top.
40.How can we protect the soil?
A.Put different insects in it.
B.Make it rich by adding humus.
C.Use chemicals to kill insect pests in it.
D.Plant more trees and keep it rich naturally.

Dear Peter,
I am glad to know that you are coming to China as an exchange student next month. At the same time, I want to tell you there are many differences between Chinese and Western cultures.
When you have meal with others, you shouldn’t eat until the old pe ople sit down. It’s impolite to talk when your mouth is full of food. As for languages, you can talk about “if you have meal” or “where are you going” when you meet your friend. For students, we must wear school uniforms on school days. The girls are not allowed to have their ears pierced. I think you should pay more attention to the traffic, because you will hear drivers honking their horns to warn pedestrians to pay attention to road conditions, while it is impolite in US.
I think these suggestions can help you and hope you can enjoy yourself. Yours,
Li Hua
