Many people think a telephone is essential. But I think it is a pest and a time waster. Very often you find it impossible to escape from some idle or curious chatter—box, or from somebody who wants something for nothing. If you have a telephone in your own house, you will admit that it tends to ring when you are asleep, or in the middle of a meal or a conversation, or when you are just going out,
or when you are taking your bath. Are you strong –minded enough to ignore it, to say to yourself, “Ah, well, it will all be the same in a h undred years’ time” You are not.You think there may be some important news or messages for you. I can assure you that if a message is really important it will reach you sooner or later. Have you never rushed dripping from the bath, or chewing from the table, or dazed from the bed, only to be told that you are a wrong number?
But you will say, you need not have your name printed in the telephone directory, and you can have a telephone which is only usable for outgoing calls. Besides, you will say, isn’t it important to have a telephone in case of emergency—illness, an accident, or fire? Of course, you are right, but here in a thickly populated country like England one is seldom far from a telephone in case of dreadful necessity.
I think perhaps I had better try to justify myself by trying to prove that what I like is good. I admit that in different circumstances—if I were a toon (business VIP), for instance, or bed –ridden I might find a telephone essential. But then if I were a taxi—driver I should find a car essential.
Let me put it another way: there are two things for which the English seem to show particular talent; one is mechanical invention, the other is literature. My own business happens to be with the use of words but I see I must now stop using them. For I have just been handed a slip of paper to say that somebody is waiting to speak to me on the telephone. I think I had better answer it. After all, one never knows, it may be something important.
64.The passage is mainly discussing .

B.that important message will reach you sooner or later
C.whether it’s necessary to answer all phone calls

B.likes to be different from other people
C.thinks the telephone is annoying
D.speaks favourably of a telephone

Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course that he attends gives him a credit that he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty—six courses each lasting for one semester .A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice.
For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm .Students who advise the academic authorities usually perform the effective work of maintaining discipline. Any student, who is thought to have broken the rules, for example by cheating, has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.
68.Normally a student would at least attend classes each week.
A.12 B.15 C.20 D.36
69.According to the first paragraph an American student is allowed .
A.to live in a different university

D.they are heavily involved in student affairs
71.The student organizations seem to be effective in .
A.dealing with the academic affairs of the university
B.keep ing up the students’ enthusiasm for social activities
C.ensuring that the students observe university regulations
D.evaluation students’ performance by bringing them before a court 72.Some students are enthusiastic for positions in student organizations probably because .
A .they hate the constant pressure and strain of their study
B .they will then be able to stay longer in the university
C .such positions help them get better jobs
D .such positions are usually well paid
D
“ONLY A COKE WILL DO ”
“We don ’t necessarily believe that new advertising ,
which might make consumers fell better about the Coke
brand or better about the ads themselves, will actually
result in consumers consuming more of the product,”
Morgan Stanley ’s Bill Pecoriello wrote in a research
note the days after the investor ( 投资者) meeting. But
Coke is optimistic it can regain its old magic, and is banking on a new slogan: “Welcome to the Coke side of
life.”
BREAKTHROUGH HIT?
With PepsiCo about to surpass Coke as the beverage king on Wall Street —Pepsi ’s market capitalization has soared in recent years to $97.9 billion, putting it less than a billion dollars behind its rival (对手) —the heat is on Coke. It ’s set to launch a new marketing campaign in March, 2006. And having taken a quick look at Coke ’s investor presentation on Dec. 7 in New York, my sense is that Coke may be moving in the right direction.
Given the continued shift by consumers away from soda —Coke ’s stronghold —and into alternative beverages like juice, tea, and water, Coke badly needs a breakthrough hit. And given that shift away from soda, some analysts wonder whether even the catchiest new ads will be enough to put the fizz back into Coke. SAME OLD, UPDATED.
The new flavors (口味) of PowerAde sports drink will probably enable Coke to continue stealing market share from PesiCo ’s Gatorade brand. And Coke is getting a little more creative with packaging, including new, aluminum bottles of Coke that will be sold in nightclubs, and an 8.4-ounce “100 calorie ” version of its flagship Coke that will appeal to women who want fewer calories and will like the fact that the small can will fit in their purse. I doubt whether other new products will be successful, including a new coffee-flavored soda called Coke-Cola Blak that I tried. Think carbonated coffee. But I ’m not sure if the product, which Coke is pitching as an afternoon pick-me-up for the 35-and-over set , is going to pull people away from their afternoon Frappucino fix. And my opinion is that Vault, an orange-flavored energy drink, will have just as much trouble unseating Mountain Dew among teens as did Coke ’s last attempt, a product called Surge.
If there is one concern I have about the fresh offerings Coke plans to
launch
this year, it appears that many of them are simply new brands, not new products. 73.According to the passage, we can know that .
A.Coke mainly depends on new products recently
B.Nowadays Coke is comparatively less popular
C.PesiCo has taken the place of Coke
D.Coke has few new brands
74.The underlined word “soared” means .
A.achieved B.dropped C.increased D.failed 75.When the middle-aged people feel tired, what would they prefer to drink in order to continue their work?
A.Vault. B.Surge. C.Coke-Cola Blak. D.Frappucino. 76.What is the best title of the passage ?
A.Troubles in Coke Company
B.Varieties of New Products
C.The Importance of New Advertisements
D.The Relationship Between Coke and Pepsi

People say teenagers are no good. They make too much noise in shopping malls; they drive recklessly up an d down America’s main streets; they carry chips on their shoulders as big as the Sears Tower. And at least some of the time those things are true. But we shouldn’t forget that there are hard moments in the life of a teenager too.
I watched such a moment no t long ago at a woman’s fu neral(葬礼). I didn’t expect the event to affect me. Through much of the ceremony, in fact, I remained unmoved.
Then her teenage grandson stepped forward. With his very first deep breath, every heart in that church was achingly reminded of something we had all forgotten. Softly he began: “I want to share a few values that Nana taught me. She never failed to see light in any situation. When our family dog would literally attact her, what would Nana say? ‘Oh, what beautiful markings that dog has.’ That was Nana.
“She was a strong woman who often lived in the shadow of my grandpa, who was a successful businessman in this city. But she was the one behind the scenes who provided the strength and support for Grandpa’s career,” he said, with a voice now trembling. “That was Nana’s way.”
Through a muffled sob, he continued. “Whenever she did anything worth recognition, you’d have to hear about it from a different source, because she was never one to brag.”
Finally, in a voice breaking free of sorrow, he looked up and s aid, “Nana taught me courage. She put up an incredible fight to the end, when she died peacefully, which is how she lived her life. That was Nana’s way, and I hope I can carry on in
the same manner.”
There are no hearts as sensitive as those of teenagers, because everything is happening to them for the first time. The trouble with teenagers is that they haven’t learned to be controlled.
When that boy rose to speak about the woman who surely had been his truest ally and dearest friend, his honest voice dragged each of us out into the open where we could no longer hide in the calm ritual. He exposed us to the truth about this very real woman who believed in a boy who probably tried the patience of many adults. He reminded us that his grandmother was more than another dot on the chart of life and death.
All over again we felt those powerful losses crisscrossing our own hearts, and we knew that when you say good-bye to a beloved grandparent, you say good-bye to something happy, something young in yourself. And that something never really returns, and the pain never really goes away.

A.was a weak woman living in the shadow of his grandpa
B.liked dogs very much even if they often attacked her
C.could see everything around her though she was old
D.had great influence over the boy when she was alive
79.We can infer from the passage that the boy ___________.
A.was filled with sadness and gave up finishing his talk
B.was always very good at expressing himself
C.practiced a lot in order to give a moving speech
D.had great difficulty in accepting the loss of Nana
80.The writer wanted to tell the readers ____________.
A.the young people were too weak to face the fact
B.the young people had to learn to control themselves
C.the adults could learn something valuable from the young

M:Have you read the st ory “The Gift of the Magi” written by O. Henry?
W:Yes. I enjoy reading his short stories. What I admire him most is that he started to write stories
while he was in prison. Who is your favorite American writer, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, or Jack London?
M:Jack London. He was born of a poor family in San Francisco in 1876. He left school at fourteen, and became a sailor, a hunter, and an explorer. In 1897 he went to the Klondike in Canada. London found adventures that he put into his most famous stories and novels.
London continued to travel until a few years before his death in 1916. Now I’m reading his story “Love of Life”. I’m sure you will like his works.
W:Great! Can you lend it to me after you finish it?
M:No problem.

M:Well it is quite expensive. Sailing holidays start at about three hundred pounds.
W:Yes, my friends went in August last year. They paid four hundred and fifty pounds each. The most I can pay is three hundred and eighty pounds.。
