A
Tokyo is one of those places that you can love and hate at the same time.
In Tokyo there are always too many people in the places where I want to be. Of course there are too many cars. The Japanese drive very fast, but in Tokyo they often spend a long time in traffic jams. Tokyo is not different from London, Paris and New York in that. It is different when one wants to walk.
At certain times of the day there are a lot of people on foot in London’s Oxford Street. But the streets near Ginze in Tokyo always have a lot of people on foot, and sometimes it is really difficult to walk. People are very polite; there are just too many of them.
The worst time to be in the street is at 11:30 pm. That is when the nightclubs are closing and everybody wants to go home. There are 35,000 nightclubs in Tokyo, and you do not often see one that is empty.
During the day, most people travel to and from work by train. People in Tokyo buy six million train tickets every day. At most stations, trains arrive every two or three minutes, but at certain hours there do not seem to be enough trains. Although they are usually crowded, Japanese trains are very good. They always leave and arrive on time. On a London train you would see everybody reading a newspaper. On Tokyo trains everybody in the seat seems to be asleep, whether his journey is long or short.
In Tokyo, I stood outside the station for five minutes. Three fire engines(消防车) raced to one of many fires that Tokyo has every day. Tokyo has so many surprises that none of them can really surprise me now.

A.it has a larger population

A fit and healthy teenage rugby player died 12 hours after taking treatment for acne (粉刺),an officer,Mary Hassel, said today. She said Shaun Jones,14,died “as a result of plications (并发症)of medical treatment”.
Shaun, who was described by his mother as “vain” about his appearance, saw Dr Jones, his family doctor, about spots on his back and shoulders after learning his friends had been given medication to deal with similar problems.
The boy,who had previously used Clearasil to treat the spots, was diagnosed with mild acne and given a prescription. But when he went to his local chemist’s with his mother,he was told the drug was not available. They said they had contacted Dr Jones (in fact they didn’t),and Shaun could be given different pills which were the same as the drug originally prescribed. Mrs. Jones noticed there were no safety instructions included in the box,but thought nothing of it at the time. Shaun took the drug just before going to bed at 10:30 pm. Little more than an hour later,he plained of shortness of breath and tightness in his chest. Mrs. Jones initially contacted an out of hours GP service but was told no doctor was available. When Shaun’s condition became worse,he was rushed to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital by ambulance in the early hours of the next morning. Despite treatment there, and at the University Hospital of Wales,Cardiff, where he was transferred,Shaun died at 10:40 am the following day. Doctors at the hospital believe an unusual reaction to the acne drug could have caused his death.
Hassel said she would write a report to the Lord Chancellor’s office underlining the importance that “doctors prescribe drugs and doctors make adjustments and patients receive drugs with the correct informati on attached”.

For generations of pupils, learning key historical dates, places, and names off by heart has been the base of academic success. But for today’s youngsters, dull rote learning(死记硬背)is meaningless because such basic facts are only a mouse click via Google,Wikipedia and online libraries, according to writer Don Tapscott.
Tapscott, author of the best-selling book Wikinomics and a supporter of the “net generation”,suggests a better approach would be to teach children to think creatively so they could learn to understand and use the knowledge available online.
He said,“Teachers are no longer the fountain(源泉)of knowledge;the Internet is. Kids should
learn about history to understand the world and why things are the way they are. But they don’t need to know all the dates.”
Tapscott dismissed (摒弃) the idea that his approach is anti-learning. Instead, he argued that the ability to learn new things is more important than ever in a world where you have to process new information at lightning speed. And he believes that the old-fashioned model of education still mon in today’s schools, involving having_facts_off_pat,was designed for the industrial age. He said, “This might have been good for the mass production economy, but it isn’t suitable for the digital economy,or for the ‘net generation’ mind. Children are going to have to reinvent their knowledge base many times. So for them memorizing facts and figures is a waste of time.”Tapscott added the brains of today’s youngsters work differently to their parents’,and that multi-tasking with digital equipment, such as using the Internet while listening to their MP3 players, can help them to develop critical thinking skills.
Schools are increasingly introducing more independent study and activities, with pupils learning at their own pace and focusing on what interests them most.
46.What is important for the “net generation” in Tapscott’s opinion?
A.Using online knowledge creatively.
B.Memorizing facts and figures.
C.Learning to respect teachers.
D.Teaching their parents to think creatively.

]
48.According to Tapscott, ________.
A.to obtain new information is important for kids
B.learning history is of no use to kids

A team of British engineers will announce a plan for the world’s first 1,000 mph car,a pencil-shaped vehicle designed not to break the world land speed record but to shatter it.
The £12,000,000 car, known as Bloodhound SSC,is to be announced today by Paul Drayson, the science minister for the UK government. It would be able to reach 1,050 mph, traveling faster than a speeding bullet. The Bloodhound team plans to have the car built within a year, with the record attempt expected in three years.
The project brings together fighter pilot Andy Green, who set the current land speed record of 763 mph with Thrust SSC in 1997,and Richard Noble, who directed that attempt.
The car will be the first to bine a jet engine(喷气发动机)for a Eurofighter Typhoon with a rocket booster(火箭助推器).The task of driving the vehicle will fall on Andy Green,46.He will use an accelerator(加速器)to power the jet engine up to speeds of around 350 mph and then fire the solid rocket booster. At that point,a V-12 racing car engine will start pumping more than a ton of hydrogen peroxide(过氧化氢)into the booster, forcing the car to 1,000 mph in 20 seconds. Team members are now visiting sites where the record attempt will be made. The current record was set at Black Rock Desert in Nevada,US. But that is impossible now as ground conditions there have bee worse since 1997.In the next week or two,Green will visit a site in South Africa.
Other possible places are the salt flats of the US and Australia. John Piper, the lead engineer on the project, said the team would get started next month.
The plan was put forward by Drayson,a racing car enthusiast,as a project to inspire a new generation of scientists and engineers, who are in desperately short supply in the UK. “We don’t have enough young people taking science and maths. These are difficult subjects and we have to give the youth a clear reason for studying them,”said Drayson.
51.The underlined word “shatter” in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by“ ________”.
A.keep B.set C.reach D.destroy

SHISHMAREF,an Eskimo village on an island off northwestern Alaska,is falling into the ocean.Giant storm waves have so hit the place—once well buffered by sea ice—that villagers voted in 2002 to leave their ancestral home for the mainland. They are being called one of the first refugees(难民)of global warming.“We tend to describe climate change in terms that are abstract—a one degree rise in temperature,an increase in greenhouse gases—but when waves wash away a village, that’s concrete and very emotional,”says Igor Krupnik,an expert at the National Museum of Natural History.“When they lose a piece of their land, they aren’t just losing a certain number of square miles. They are losing part of their history and their memory. They are losing childhood events and grandparents’tales.”
Before temperatures began to rise in Shishmaref about 30 years ago,20 to 30 miles of hard sea ice protected the village from powerful fall storms. But the natives say the ice doesn’t freeze as solidly or as soon as it used to and now stretches only six or seven miles, leaving the munity of 600 people more exposed.Storms have swept houses into the ocean.
The villagers’ plan is to move to Tin Creek,a site on the Alaska mainland 12 miles away, and they have received $180 million from the government.
Residents hope that in their new munity they’ll be able to maintain their close ties, continue hunting animals, and keep fishing, much as their ancestors have done for centuries.“People are asking why the government should be spending so much money on so few people,”said a government official.“But people in Alaska are like everyone else.We want to help keep their culture alive.”

Dear Editor,
I’m a Senior 2 student. In our school, every Friday afternoon, after the second class, we have time to see an English film. Opinions differ on this matter.
Some students take interest in it. They think it is fun and makes them feel relaxed. So it’s a good idea to enjoy a film after a week’s hard work. What’s more, it can even improve their spoken English by watching English films.
However, some students think watching films is a waste of time, which can have a negative effect on their studies. Time is limited for them so they should make full use of time to study their lessons.
There’s no doubt that films play an important part in our daily life. In my opinion, we’d better spend more time on our studies but on the other hand, we should have some time to relax.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua。
