Everybody in this world is different from one another. But do you know that understanding differences can help you better manage your money?
As we grow up, we gradually develop a set of our own values or beliefs. These are influenced by society, our family, the education we receive and so on. Once this value system is set up, it’s not easy to change later in life.
Financial experts say that everyone also has their own belief of how to manage their
finances. This is part of our value system and it has a great impact on the way we look after our money.
According to our different values, experts put us in three categories. They are: the ant, the cricket and the snail.
The ant—works first
Just like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people don’t care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they earn so that they can enjoy life when they get old and retire. The ant loves to save but they could make more out of their money if they were willing to invest(投资) in some funds and stocks with low risk.
The cricket—fun first
The cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn’t think too much about the future. They even borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These people have little savings. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy nsurance(保险).
The snail—lives under pressure
The snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take big long-term loans (贷款)from the bank in order to buy things such as expensive houses. They are happy to take big loans even though they are not sure they can afford it. This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.
25. People with the character of the snail would like to _______.
A. enjoy life at the moment without thinking much about the future.
B. take the risk of investing a large sum of money.
C. put work before everything else.
D.live a wasteful life at all costs.
26. This passage mainly talks about _______.
A. the spending nature of people.
B. the problems with dealing with money.
C. the insects in nature.
D. the reaction between man and insects.
27. Which of the following has the character that the author prefers?
A. The ants
B. The cricket
C. The snail
D. None of the above
C
If it feels like you are the one doing most of housework in your home, it may be time to share the load with your children. Giving the chores(家庭杂物) not only lightens your workload, it also encourages teamwork and discipline. They get to understand they are playing an important role in the family.
“Most of the problems here arise from the words we use. There’s big difference between ‘doing chores’ and just ‘helping out’ around the house ,”says Sarah Ockwell, author of ToddlerCalm. “Chores are a normal part of everyday life and it is important that children learn to understand this as young as possible. Children need to understand that they are expected to contribute to all parts of family life,” she adds.
Chores may make them consider the time you spend on keeping the house clean and tidy. They may be a little more thoughtful, perhaps even putting their dirty clothes in the laundry basket rather than just pile them on their bedroom floor.
Children are pretty self-centered on the whole and think about themselves a lot of the time, but they also like to receive praise for their actions. So doing chores gives them the opportunity to be helpful and do something for others rather than just themselves.
It’s good for a child’s self-esteem to be given a task to do, even if it’s making their bed, Chores give a child confidence in their own abilities and teach them the domestic skills they’ll need in their later life, like using the washing machine and cleaning the toilet.
“It also teaches them responsibility, and how to look after themselves,” says Liz who’s also the author of TodderCalm. “They are important life skills, not least in how to not be a r eally spoiled, selfish child!”
28.What’s Liz’s attitude towards chores for children?
A. Doubtful.
B. Supportive.
C. Opposed.
D. Uncertain.
29.What does Sarah Ockwell stress according to Paragraphs 2?
A. The importance of family life.
B.The proper use of language in our life.
C.The necessity of chores for children.
D.Children’s psychological development.
30.According to Paragraph 3,chores_____________
A.make kids easily e up with fresh ideas.
B.help kids develop important life skills.
C.help kids break away from bad habits.
D.make parents appreciate their own work.
31.What may the author continue to discuss in the following text?
A.Why children need to do chores at home.
B.What children usually expect from their parents.
C.How chores can benefit a child.
D.How to get a child to help around the house.
D
A man enters a store to buy milk. He walks out of the store with milk. That is all—milk. At the same time, a woman enters the same grocery store also to buy milk. She buys it. But, she also buys chicken and lemons to make dinner that night. She also gets a bottle of wine for drinks with friends and a birthday card for her husband’s niece. And that is the difference between the female and male brains simply explained in a grocery store. Generally speaking, men do one thing at a time. Women do many. Doing many things at one time is often called “multi-tasking,” a very popular word these days.
Now scientific research supports this theory about male and female brains. A recent study has confirmed what we have known all along—men and women think differently.
Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania studied brain images of 949 people aged from 8 to 22 years old. They found that male brains have more connections on one side of the brain, or hemisphere. In the female brain, they found more activity and connections between the right and left sides of the brain. The left side of the brain is known as the side of “reason”. The right hemisphere is known as the “creative” side.
Regina Verma is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. She co-wrote the report. She says when women are asked to do something plicated they might use different parts of the brain. But men generally use just one.
As a result, men generally deal directly with a problem. There is a strong connection between the “understanding” and the “action” parts of their brains. Women, however, might include other parts of the brain, like the part connected with “reason” and the part connected with sensitivity when solving a problem. Women take a less direct path to find a solution.
32. From Paragraph 1, we can learn that women .
A. are more hard-working than men .
B. go shopping more than men.
C. are more careful than men .
D. are more multi-tasking than men.
33.When asked to do something plicated, men .
A. only use the “reason” side of the brain.
B. use one part of the brain.
C. use different parts of the brain.
D. only use the “creative” side of the brain.
34.The main purpose of the passage is to tell us .
A. that men and women really do think differently.
B. who want to go shopping more, men or women.
C. why women want to do many things at one time.
D. that men and women all like to drink milk.
35.What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Men like doing something difficult.
B. Men take a less direct path to find a solution.
C. Women usually deal with a problem indirectly.
D. Women brains have more connections on one side.

How to reduce food waste
It was reported recently that in the UK,we throw away up to one third of the food we buy each week. This adds up to 6.7 million tonnes of food each year. As the food crisis (危机) increases around the world, it makes sense for us to reduce the amount of food we waste. 36
Here are some tips to help you reduce food waste.
* Make a menu plan.
Think about the meals that your family enjoys most and make a menu plan for the week. Write down the materials you need for each meal on a list. There is nothing worse than pushing a trolley(手推车) around a supermarket aimlessly with no ideas about your meals for the following week. 37
* Use up your leftovers.
Before you begin your menu plan, take a look at any leftovers in the fridge, vegetable rack and cupboards. 38 Overripe fruits can be made into pies. A few spoons of cooked mince(肉末) could be made into pasties(肉馅饼).
* 39
It’s a simple tip but an important one. If you shop when you are very hungry, you’ll be tempted t o buy all sorts of things you don’t need. Plus if you’re not focusing on your hunger, you’re not focusing on making good choices.
* Take a look at what you throw away.
40 Do you throw away half a loaf of bread a week? Then why not freeze it and take out slices as you need them? If you regularly throw away vegetables then maybe you need to reduce the amount you buy each week.
A.Don’t shop when you are hungry.
B.Be honest with yourself and start writing things down.
C.Vegetables which are starting to go soft can be made into soup.
D.You often end up with lots of materials that don’t go together!
E.You might often find something bad hiding in the back of the bridge.
F.When you get home from shopping, put the new food at the back of the fridge.
G.This will save us money too—imagine saving a third of your weekly food bill!
