文章主要介绍了杰米·特纳50多年来一直坚持用玻璃竖琴演奏美妙的音乐。

13. Jamey Turner often performs to large crowds in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. Y ou can find him playing an unusual musical instrument, the
glass harp, near Alexandria's historic waterfront.
A glass harp is made up of different-sized drinking glasses, each filled with water. Turner makes music by running his fingers over the tops of the
glasses. By doing so, each glass makes a different musical sound.
Turner is 78 years old now. He became interested in playing the glass harp at the age of six, when he heard his father playing with a glass of water at the dinner table. He has been playing it for 50 years.
Today Turner puts together his instrument by placing 60 different glasses on a wooden soundboard. He holds the glasses in place with rubber bands, which keeps them from breaking. He then adds different amounts of water to each one to create different musical notes. Adding or taking away just a little water will change the sound. Adding water to a glass will make a lower sound. The smaller bowls of water produce a higher sound, while the larger ones produce a lower, deeper sound.
Turner always uses low-priced glass because it sounds better than costly crystal and he has more control over the sound. Before buying new glasses, he will test them in stores.
The glass harp was popular 300 years ago when composers like Wolfgang Mozart wrote music for the instrument. There have been about 400 pieces of music written just for the glass harp. But Turner plays all kinds of music, even popular music from China. Few people play the glass harp these days, but Turner says he sees videos of people experimenting with the instrument on Y ouTube. He hopes the next generation will continue making their music.

14. I was in Houston a few weeks ago, and needed to be back home in Austin by midmorning the next day. Though I usually left in the evening, for some reason last time I had to choose to set off after midnight.
I was on my way back to Austin when I realized I left an important file, and knew I had to return to get it. I took the first exit I could, but when I rounded the corner, an 18-wheeler was stopped dead in the exit lane. I swerved to avoid it, and then I realized that there was something wrong with my car. So I pulled into a small parking lot and unsurprisingly found the area deserted at 3:15 am. I’ve lived in urban areas most of my life. I’m fairly street-wise and don’t become frightened easily, but I knew I was in a pretty tough neighborhood.
There was no one in Houston to pick me up. I immediately locked the doors and picked up my phone to call a tow truck. Soon a young man knocked on my driver’s side window and asked if he could help me. Judging from his appearance, he was far from a mad man, but I knew he was far more likely to rob than help me. So I lied to him. After a while, he asked again, but this time I politely refused and told him the tow truck was due any minute. He finally said, “Madam, you need help. A tow truck in Houston will arrive anywhere between 45 minutes and approximately never (which I knew was true), and you aren’t going anywhere until you change your flat tire.”
After considering thoroughly, I got out. He looked surprised, but got right to work. He changed the tire, returned the seat to its place and said,“Thank you for letting me help you. Y ou gave me a chance when most people would never open the door to someone like me. Would it be okay if I gave you a hug?” When I recovered, I gave him a giant hug. I left with a new tire and a renewed faith in human nature.
1. What’s the matter with the author’s car?
A.It couldn’t get started.B.Its oil ran out.
C.It was out of control.D.Its tire burst.
2. Why did the author lie to the man and refuse his help in the beginning?
A.Because she thought the man was playing jokes.
B.Because she thought the man might be a bad man.
C.Because she thought the man wanted to get a lift.
D.Because she thought the man was a mad man.
3. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Stubborn but brave.B.Impolite and dishonest.
C.Cautious and brave.D.Generous but dishonest.
4. Which of the following might be the best title for the text?
A.Attitude Determines Everything B.Help in the Dead of Night
C.The Fight against Robbing on My Way D.An Unexpected Traffic Accident

16. Rich countries are racing to dematerialise payments. They need to do more to prepare for the side-effects.
For the past 3,000 years, when people thought of money they thought of cash. Over the past decade, however, digital payments have taken off—tapping your plastic on a terminal or swiping a smartphone has become normal. Now this revolution is about to turn cash into an endangered species in some rich economies. That will make the economy more efficient—but it also causes new problems that could hold back the transition(转型).
Countries are removing cash at varying speeds. In Sweden the number of retail cash transaction per person has fallen by 80% in the past ten years. America is perhaps a decade behind. Outside the rich world, cash is still king. But even there its leading role is being challenged. In China digital payments rose from 4% of all payments in 2012 to 34% in 2017.
Cash is dying out because of two forces. One is demand— younger consumers want payment systems that plug easily into their digital lives. But equally important is that suppliers such as banks and tech firms (in developed markets) and telecoms companies (in emerging ones) are developing fast, easy-to-use payment technologies from which they can pull data and pocket fees. There is a high cost to running the infrastructure behind the cash economy—A TMs, vans carrying notes, tellers who accept coins. Most financial firms are keen to abandon it, or discourage old-fashioned customers with heavy fees.
In the main, the prospect of a cashless economy is excellent news. Cash is inefficient. When payments dematerialise, people and shops are less open to theft. It also creates a credit history, helping consumers borrow.
Y et set against these benefits are a couple of worries. Electronic payment systems may risk technical failures, power failure and cyber-attacks. In
a cashless economy the poor, the elderly and country folk may be left behind. And a digital system could let governments watch over people’s
shopping habits and private multinationals exploit their personal data.
1. Some rich countries are trying to __________.
A.dematerialize money
B.get rid of the side-effects of cash
C.make the economy more efficient by protecting endangered species
D.promote payment without paper money or coins
2. In paragraph 3, several countries are mentioned to show _____________.
A.the differences between developed and developing countries
B.that cash is still king across the world
C.digital payments are becoming a trend that cannot be stopped
D.China is developing faster that those developed countries in digital payment
3. Cash is disappearing largely because _________________.
A.younger consumers are short of money to live their digital lives
B.suppliers are trying to reduce costs and obtain money and data
C.the infrastructure is developing at a high speed in developed markets
D.financial firms want to abandon old-fashioned customers
