At the age of 16, Lasse Stolley from Germany went out for a change after graduation from junior high school. Little did he know that this change would take him farther than 500,000 kilometers—all on trains.
Inspired by a movie he had watched online, Stolley bought a Bahncard 100, a ticket that allows unlimited (无限制的) travel on all Deutsche Bahn trains in Germany for a year. But Stolley didn’t just travel on those trains. He made his home on trains, living there full-time. During the day, he took trips and at night, he slept across the seats on high-speed trains.
“I can decide every day where I want to go, whether to the Alps, to a big city or to the sea,” Stolley said.
Each morning, Stolley would check the train connections for the day, and decide what journeys he would take based on the weather and his mood (心情). He might stop off at a swimming pool for a shower, or enjoy the views with a hike between train rides.
While he didn’t pay rent, Stolley said that he had spent around $10,000 a year on living expenses, including his $6,400 train pass and entry cost to things like swimming pools. But since Stolley was a “Platinum” Deutsche Bahn customer, he could eat from Deutsche Bahn for free.
To cover his extra cost, he made a buck on the move by working as a programmer from his laptop (手提电脑). In 2023 alone, Stolley spent over 3,700 hours on trains. He also took trains across Europe with an Interrail pass, and travelled as far as Ankara in Turkey. All of his adventures were recorded on his online blog, named “Life on the Train”.
24. What drove Stolley’s interest in travelling by train?
A. A lesson.
B. A book.
C. A ticket.
D. A film.
25. Why was Stolley’s journey special?
A. He lived on trains.
B. He never got off the same train.
C. His train journey lasted over a year.
D. He didn’t spend any money.

It usually takes a generation or two to measure the full effects of changes in technology and the influence that these changes have on our lives.
We have just gone through another industrial revolution (变革) with the creation of the Internet. You wouldn’t know life before the Internet, but it is very different now. Just like when I was a kid, I wouldn’t have known what life was like before television. However, the fact is that we are seeing what is happening now before our very eyes. It is all mostly good, but some of it has a bad influence as well.
The past years has seen the rise of social media as the source of communication and information. Our little handheld phones have become our window to the world round the clock, where people can share experiences with others all around the planet.
But as with most things, we have seen the downsides of social media. The spreading of false news, online bullying (欺凌), and unpleasant images are just some of the downsides.
We are seeing young people losing themselves in their screens by checking things on social media or having thoughts of self-harm. Older generations say “just turn off the phone”, but they don’t realize that young people are conditioned to live in that online world and it is impossible to turn it off.
That is why the government is now looking for the prevention by different means. And one of them is raising the age limits for social media users. But how would that work? I find it fun to think that my older Boomer generation is going to try to block social media access and outsmart these teens. We know who will win that one! But as I said at the start, we are seeing the effects of this technology after a couple of generations and we need to do something about it.
28. What is the author’s opinion about the revolution caused by the Internet?
A. It will last for a short time.
B. It has more bad influences.
C. We can do nothing about it.
D. We can see it shaping our life.
29. What is an advantage of mobile phones according to the text?
A. They make it easy to travel alone.
B. They are quite cheap.
C. They keep us connected at all times.
D. They create new ideas.
30. What does the author want to show by mentioning online bullying?
A. The serious health risk.
B. The danger of social media.
C. The mistakes students make.
D. The false news on the Internet.
31. What might the author continue talking about?
A. Other harm prevention measures.
B. The reason why we take action.
C. Parents’doubts about social media.
D. The role the Internet can play.
D
The monarch butterfly (帝王蝶) population has dropped to its second-lowest number on record in Mexican forests this winter. The forests are the insects’ (昆虫) winter home. Their population is now worrisome as the butterfly group is already considered at risk of disappearance.
Mexico’s government and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) recently made public the findings of their yearly
joint study on the butterflies. The research shows that the monarch butterfly presence has dropped to less than a hectare of forest area. In the mid-1990s, monarch butterflies could be found on around 18 hectares of the forest.
The findings show an almost 60 percent drop in the monarch butterfly population compared to last year’s study.
It is also the second-lowest population finding since the first study took place more than thirty years ago.
Biologists believe the serious situation is caused by the higher-than-usual temperatures and dry conditions in the northwestern US where the butterfly reproduces. The weather conditions have an influence on the growth of milkweed, the plant where the butterflies lay their eggs. When the young arrive, milkweed is their food for a time.
In one of the planet’s famous wildlife migrations (迁徙), the butterflies travel south as far as 4,500 kilometers from places as far north as Canada. They spend the winter in warmer Mexico, where millions of the insects stay in trees that protect them from the rain and cold.
Monarch butterfly populations change year to year. As recently as 2021, the same study showed a 35% increase to cover around 2.8 hectares. Scientists called for more action to help the insects. Such calls included the need to use less herbicides that may present a danger to milkweed and the need to protect forests. “We can’t lower our guard,” said Jorge Rickards, head of WWF’s Mexico office.
32. How does hot weather influence the monarch butterflies?
A. They fly to as far as Canada.
B. They likely have less to eat.
C. They stop living in tall trees.
D. They have to feed more babies.
33. We can know that Mexican forests in winter ________.
A. are free from rain
B. are full of tourists
C. are rich in wildlife
D. are often very cold
34. What do scientists suggest about monarch butterflies?
A. Taking more steps to protect them.
B. Stopping them eating more leaves.
C. Studying them as much as possible.
D. Checking their number quickly.
35. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. A New-found Insect in Mexican Forests
B. The Purpose of the World Wildlife Fund
C. The Secret of Monarch Butterflies’Travel
D. A Big Fall in Monarch Butterfly Population

参考答案、提示及评分细则
听力部分录音稿
(Text 1)
W: See you in two weeks, everybody. I’m off to Paris tomorrow. Two weeks of good food and fine wine.
M: Be sure to go up the Eiffel Tower while you’re there. The view is amazing.
(Text 2)
W: Excuse me, sir. This area of the building is private. Where are you trying to go?
M: Oh, sorry. I’m trying to get to the train station without leaving this building.
W: I see. You’ll need to go downstairs.
(Text 3)
M: Don’t go out. Your dinner will be ready in half an hour.
W: It’s only 5:30. Why are we having it so early?
M: Your cousin’s coming at 8:00 pm and we don’t want to be eating when he arrives.
(Text 4)
M: Oh, wow. What are all you people doing here?
W: Happy birthday, Tony. Come in and join the party.
M: Is this for me?You people are crazy. I had no idea. Who organized this?
(Text 5)
W: Sometimes we see wild deer in this forest.
M: They probably like it because they can easily hide. I have seen rabbits and mice as well.
W: I like bigger animals better, like horses.
(Text 6)
M: My family has lived on this farm for generations. There’s no way we could sell it to anyone.
W: I understand. But my company considers this farm’s location very valuable. Here’s our official offer.
M: I’m sorry. I’m sure your land developing company has big plans for this area, but this farm is my birthplace, and I’ve worked here since I was eighteen years old. It has become a part of my life.
W: No worries. Anyway, Mr. Jenkins, it’s been a pleasure. Our offer will remain for the next ten years. If you change your mind, give me a call.
(Text 7)
W: I keep calling Grandpa but he doesn’t answer. I’ve left two voice messages. I worry about him being alone. I just want to make sure he’s OK.
M: I’m sure he’s fine. He’s probably been busy, and he is a little deaf. Why don’t you try going to his house? It’s not too far from where you work.
W: Good idea, honey. I could take back to him all those books I borrowed from him as well.
M: Yes, then you can find out how he is feeling without letting him know you are worried about him.
W: I’ll go tomorrow after work. I have to get those books together and put them in the box under the table now. (Text 8)
M: Hey, how did the interview go?
W: I didn’t get it.
M: They told you that at the interview?
W: Not really.
M: So how do you know you didn’t get it?
W: I just know. I smiled too much and didn’t really get the answers right, I think.
M: I’m sure you did fine. It’s just in your head. Why don’t you wait and see what happens?
W: I wish I could be as calm and confident as you, but this is the fifth interview I’ve had and anxiety is starting to get to me.
M: Why don’t we go out tonight? There’s a show on at 7:00 pm.
W: Thanks for trying to cheer me up, but I think I’m just going to have an early night.
(Text 9)
W: Good morning, Mr. Conway. John Carroll rang this morning. You remember, Polly’s father?
M: Yes, I remember.
W: He asks if he can change the time of his meeting with you from this afternoon to 8 am tomorrow. Also, Grace from the Parent Teacher Association wants to have a word with you about something. She’s left an envelope on your desk—the big brown one.
M: I wonder what that’s about.
W: She didn’t say.
M: Anyway, good morning, Karen. Yes, go ahead and move the meeting with Mr. Carroll to tomorrow. Then, could you message all the science teachers, and tell them I’d like to talk to them this afternoon, say about 3 o’clock?
W: OK, Mr. Conway. Also, don’t forget you have an interview this morning. Would you like some tea or coffee now? M: Coffee would be great, Karen.
W: No problem.
M: Thank you. That reminds me. Could you please call my wife and ask if my grey suit is back from the dry cleaner’s? I need to wear it tonight.
(Text 10)
M: When I was 10 years old, my dad went broke and lost his business. I remember entering our house, and all the furniture was gone, the car had gone—even my toys had gone. On one awful day it seemed like my whole life had changed. Some years later, my parents took me to a park, where I saw some children with no parents and no homes to go to. That made a big impression. When my second movie was a hit around the world and I was suddenly an international star, I decided to establish a charity organization for poor children, and I’ve donated half the profit from my last two films to it. The charity’s aim is to provide food and high-quality education for children here and throughout the world. So far, we’ve helped more than 5,000 kids and we hope to help many more. Ladies and gentlemen, I truly believe it is the duty of successful people to help those who are less lucky.
