Unit 14 Careers
Yesterday I interviewed Lucy, a famous reporter.Lucy, now taking charge of“Hot News”, is always dynamic, flexible and full of wisdom. When asked the reason for her success, Lucy responded that being curious, working hard and believing in what was true were important.
In her childhood, Lucy was curious about everything in the universe. She even turned over big stones to observe little insects there. With her mother's aid, she even set up her lab to become a chemist. Lucy was always committed to her study and overcame difficulties by herself due to her mother's influence. When she succeeded in solving a problem, her mother would reward her with a kiss. She always consulted her mother and never quarrelled with her.
After graduation, Lucy became a reporter on TV.She liked her job, because she could help people grasp what was going on surrounding them. In addition, she could inspect and report illegal things. Sometimes, she was bothered by these things and felt panicked. But she knew as a reporter, she seldom got comfort and extra bonus. To our relief, her efforts finally paid off and she's won several awards in the USA. Lucy said a reporter must be serious, not make up any news, check his articles carefully to avoid any error and speak up representing common people. Now, we have entered the 21st century and it is a stage where the whole world is constantly changing. Lucy said she met with new challenges. And she said only by constant learning could she keep up with the changes. She needed to grasp new skills in case she fell behind the times one day. Through her recent survey, Lucy found jobs about information technology were multiplying and information companies were booming and operating well, while jobs in farming, heavy industry were decreasing rapidly. Her report reminded the government of taking measures to keep the balance.

W:Hello, this is Susan Howard. May I speak to my son, please?
M:I'm sorry. He's still out on his duty delivering letters. Shall I take a message?
(Text 2)
W:I'm sorry I'm late.
M:Oh, that's all right. I just wondered what was keeping you. The traffic?
W:No, it was the bus I took. I took the wrong one. That was a disaster for me.
(Text 3)
W:I'm sorry, but I can't find the book you lent to me.
M:Oh, that's all right.
W:I must apologize. I'll buy you a new one tomorrow.
M:No, please don't. I couldn't let you do that. It's an old book. Just let it go.
(Text 4)
W:What time do you start working?
M:I work from 9 to 3. Then I start again at 5:30 and work until 10:30, six days a week.
W:And do you have to work at the weekend?
M:Oh, yes, that's our busiest time.
(Text 5)
W:Did you go on a trip alone or with your friends last month?
M:I was planning to go with Jeff and Richard, but they both couldn't spare the time.
W:What did you do with your dog while you were away?
M:Oh, Tom is a good traveler, as long as he gets a chance to play.
(Text 6)
W:Excuse me. How much do you want for this bowl?
M:Don't move it. It's easy to break. That's one piece of outstanding glass in perfect shape. It's worth 150 dollars.
W:Oh, I couldn't possibly pay that much.
M:Hold on, lady. I said it was worth 150 dollars but I can give it to you for only 120 dollars.
W:I'll give you 60 dollars.
M:60! Come on, lady. You've got to be kidding. I paid more than that for it myself. Take it for 90 dollars. I can't go any lower than that.
W:Well, maybe I could give you 80 dollars.
M:OK. Let me wrap it up for you. There you are, lady, a real bargain.
(Text 7)
M:Time to eat!
W:I'm starving. Oh, what's that? Where is Mom?
M:Now, Mom put me in charge of dinner tonight.
W:But what is it? What's the smell?
M:It's pizza. I just followed an old family recipe here.
W:Let me see. Oh, Dad. You're missing a page!
M:Well, I couldn't find the second page of the recipe, but don't worry. I have plenty of experience around the house.
W:That's not what Mom said.
M:Here let us try a piece first. This is great.
W:Dad, you put a little too much salt in it. Besides, it's burned. And what's that?
M:That's just part of my own recipe. I added some pumpkin.
W:Oh, not another one of your surprises. Pumpkin doesn't go with pizza!
(Text 8)
M:Laura, what was your first job?
W:The first job I had was a sales assistant in a shoe shop. When I was fifteen, I got my first job and I used to work every Saturday for 8 hours a day and I used to earn 1.5 pounds per hour.
M:It doesn't sound like very much.
W:No, so in England now, the minimum may be 5 pounds.
M:Oh, wow! So how long did you work at this job?
W:I worked all together in three different shoe shops. In the first one I worked for a year and then it closed down. After that they moved me to another one, the same company. Three months later they moved me to a new shoe shop because they were short of hands. But half a year later I left my job when I had to study for my exams at school.
(Text 9)
W:Oh, where are we going?
M:I want to show you something.
W:I know, but what is it?
M:A farm. It's just down this road. It's a small place, but at least it would be our own.
W:A farm? How can we afford to buy a farm?
M:It isn't large, only 1 acre. We wouldn't have to pay very much right now.
W:Is there a house on the farm?
M:A small one, two bedrooms, but it needs to be fixed up a little. I can do the job myself.
W:OK. Is there enough space for a kitchen garden?
M:There is about half an acre behind the house. That's plenty of space. We can probably grow a lot of our own food.
W:What are you thinking about growing?
M:Well, it really isn't big enough for corn. I thought we might try to raise a crop of potatoes.
W:Do we have enough money to get all of these?
M:I think we've saved enough. We can also ask John about the money he borrowed from us.
(Text 10)
(W) Good morning, boys and girls. As we know, in the past years our school held many competitions successfully every year, like Singing Competition and Dancing Competition. In fact I do know most of the students will want to have the Reading Competition as was held last year. But, now we'll have something that may be much more fun. It's the Pet Competition! Well, in fact, it aims at letting all students know the importance of loving animals. Nowadays, too many people can't treat animals so well. They do not think carefully before getting a pet.
At the competition, you will not be disappointed because our teachers will not give you boring lessons to ask you to love animals. Instead, we can all learn something from a relaxing environment. There's a dog beauty contest and we will choose the best dog. The competition will be based on the dogs' ability. Unfortunately this competition is not open to your pets this year. Our school has selected five dogs for this competition. That means, we can just sit back and enjoy. So please come to join this event and vote for your favorite dogs! How can you afford to miss such an educational and fun event of the year?

A
We all want to believe that laughter is good for what makes us ill, but the science backing that up is thin. Most studies have been small and have relied on selfre ported
assessments.
However, a few studies relying on lab testing do show some
benefits. “A big laugh leads to the release of endorphins (chemicals
that can make you feel happier) from the brain,” says Michael Miller from the University of Maryland Medical Center.
A 2015 study by Miller measured the blood flow of 20 volunteers before and after watching a funny movie and a sad movie. After the sad movie, blood flow was more restricted (受限制的) in 14 of the 20 viewers. But after the movie that made them laugh, average blood flow increased by 22 percent.
Financial backing for laughter and humor research is weak — so weak that when Mary Bennett, director of the Western Kentucky University School of Nursing, wanted to look into the effect of laughter on the immune system, she found herself asking other researchers for equipment from their labs. “It's really hard to get taken seriously when you say you study laughter,” she says.
But her study of 33 healthy women, published in 2017, showed that those who laughed at a humorous movie had higher levels of natural killer cell activity, which increased their ability to fight off disease. However, the effect was seen only in the subjects who laughed out loud, not in those who quietly watched the comedy.
But most of the research on laughter and health depends on personal feelings or opinions rather than scientific facts. One study of 70 depressed elderly women found that laughter yoga was just as effective as exercise in improving mood, as measured by selfsatisfaction report s by subjects.
When Bennett is asked whether laughter cures or prevents any disease, her quick answer is a simple “No.” Still, she adds, “I think it's a useful addon to real medicine. If you're receiving medicinal treatment, anything you can do to help you stay healthy through something unpleasant will help.”

In summer 2007, I joined the British Red Cross at 15. After several days of training, I was attending my first event as a fully qualified (合格的) Red Cross volunteer. Our team was providing medical cover for a large martial arts (武术) grading event.
Although I'd passed my first aid course with_flying_colours,_I was nervous before the event began. There's quite a difference between the classroom and the real thing! Two experienced adult volunteers would be working with me for the day.
Rosie was taking part in the under16s event. This was supposed to be noncontact, and she was wearing full protective clothing just in case. All these precautions (预防措施) didn't help however, when her competitor misjudged a move and delivered a violent blow to her head.
“Guys, we need some help over here!” Over we went, all three of us carrying various bits of kit (工具箱). Rosie was lying on the ground. As we approached we could see she was conscious Brian, my colleague took the lead.
“Hey there, stay nice and still for me. Chris here is just going to hold your head. Don't worry; it's just a precaution.”
I helped, painfully aware that hundreds of sets of eyes were following our every move. However I soon forgot all about this as I focused on the task at hand.
Rosie was complaining of pain in her neck. These are all classic signs of a possible spinal injury. Quickly, Brian found there were no other injuries and an ambulance was called. I was still holding her head and doing my best to comfort her.
The doctors arrived and we put Rosie carefully into the ambulance for a trip to hospital. Then we went back to the first aid post quickly.
Ten years on I've met many more people like Rosie —in need of help. I've moved on from being a trainee to a trainer, from an inexperienced first aider to being part of an emergency ambulance team.
When a call comes in, that slight feeling of nervousness is still there. However, so is the feeling of making a difference, being there during a painful moment in someone's life.

National Football League (NFL) playoffs take center stage in January. Pro football continues to pull in the largest TV audiences, but some wonder whether
ratings problems show a longterm trend.
Viewership was down by double digits for primetime (电视的黄金时间的) games through much of 2016. Among the reasons cited: the retirement of quarterback Peyton Manning, the absence of suspended quarterback Tom Brady during the first month of play, a nation attracted by the spectacle of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton battling, and growing concerns over player safety.
“I think there were a lot of ingredients in the stew this year,” said Mike Tirico, former playbyplay voice of ESPN's “Monday Night Football” who is part of NBC's NFL coverage.
Mr. Tirico also mentioned a generational shift in great teams and players, which can lead to decreases in interest until fans become familiar with the next great teams and stars. And it's only a recent occurrence for the NFL to schedule Thursday primetime games through the entirety of the regular season, points out Tirico. That means primetime g ames are played on Sunday, Monday, and Thursday. It's unlikely that a 32team league can come up with exciting matchups for most of those time slots (时间段).
Despite the concerns, analysts_don't_see_2016_as_a_canary_in_the_coal_mine. By late in the season, ratings for all games (not just those during prime time) were off by 10 percent, according to ESPN, increasing from a previous 14 percent through Election Day. And the popular Dallas Cowboys, who were featured in several December primetime games, generate d strong interest.
Translation: By Super Sunday, the NFL believes it will be close to its normal TV winning ways. But the question will hang around till next season: Has the glut (供应过剩) of pro football, plus concerns over player safety, changed its place as America's most popular sport?
32.What do we know about the NFL ratings drop in 2016?
A.It resulted in Trump's new policy.
B.It forced some great players to retire.
C.It was partly due to concerns over player safety.
D.It was followed by a sharp rise in January, 2017.
根据第二段中的“Among the reasons cited ... growing concerns over player safety.”
33.In Tirico's eyes, the rescheduling of the NFL ________.
A.will negatively affect its ratings
B.can meet the need of TV audiences
C.helps popularize new players
D.will ruin the sport in the end
根据第四段中的“It's unlikely that a 32team league can come up with exciting matchups for most of those time slots.”
34.What does the underlined part imply?
A.Analysts support the Dallas Cowboys.
B.Analysts turn a blind eye to the drop.
C.Analysts insist all games be considered.
D.Analysts are positive about the NFL ratings.
根据倒数第二段中的“increasing from a previous 14 percent”和“Dallas Cowboys, who were featured in several December primetime games, generated strong interest”可知,分析人员觉得大家过于担心了。
a canary in the coal mine
35.What is discussed in the text?
A.What's concerning the NFL?
B.Are pro sports losing their TV fans?
C.What's behind the NFL ratings drop?
D.Has football found its place in America?
