Part ⅡReading Comprehension
Directions:Read the following passages followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A,B,C and D.Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage.
People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions—and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.
Rachael Jack,University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly(均匀的)across a face as Westerners do,Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,”Jack said.“Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and neglect(忽略)the mouth.”
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human
communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in crosscultural situati ons.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories:happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry,or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made sign ificantly more errors than did Westerners.“The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said.“Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion,Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”
In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on,examining how cultural factors have diversified these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion.Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures,Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.
36.The discovery shows that Westerners ______.
A.pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth
B.consider facial expressions universally reliable
C.observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways
D.have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions
37.What were the people asked to do in the study?
A.To make a face at each other. B.To get their faces impressive.
C.To classify some face pictures. D.To observe the researchers' faces.
38.What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A.The participants in the study. B.The researchers of the study.
C.The errors made during the study. D.The data collected from the study.
39.In comparison with Westerners,Easterners are likely to______.
A.do translation more successfully B.study the mouth more frequently C.examine the eyes more attentively D.read facial expressions more correctly
40.What can be the best title for the passage?
A.The Eye as the Window to the Soul B.Cultural Differences in Reading Emotions C.Effective Methods to Develop Social Skills
D.How to Increase Crosscultural Understanding

Direction:Read the following passage.Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.
A migraine headache(偏头疼)can cause disabling pain.People may not feel back to normal for hours or even days.
Migraine headac hes are most common among young adults and middleaged people. In the United States, about eighteen percent of women and six percent of men report having migraines.
People who suffer from migraines can find that different “triggers” in different people may get a headache started.Stress can act as a trigger.
Many migraine sufferers say hot weather and low barometric pressure(气压)can act as triggers, but researchers say they did not have much scientific evidence of that—until now.
In a new study,a team examined the medical records of seven thousand hospital patients. The patients had visited the emergency room at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston,Massachusetts, because of a headache.More than two thousand of them had been found to have a migraine.
The t eam then compared those records to weather conditions in the twentyfour hours before the hospital visits. For every increase of five degrees Celsius in air temperature, the patients had a seven and onehalf percent higher risk of migraine.Decreases in barometric pressure two to three days before the visit also appeared to cause headaches.
A separate study has found that age, gender and where a person has extra body fat may affect the risk of migraine. It found that overweight people between the ages of twenty and fiftyfive may have a higher risk.On average, those who were larger around the middle were more likely to have migraines than those of the same age with smaller waistlines(腰围).
Experts suggest that losing weight in the stomach area may help younger people who experience migraines, especially women.Doing exercises regularly is also helpful to reducing migraine headaches.

Section B
Ladies and gentlemen,
Good morning.I'm Li Hua from Fujian,China. It's my great honor to be here to say something about the global water shortage and ways of dealing with it.
As we know, the global water shortage is becoming increasingly severe mainly due to global warming, environmental pollution and the everincreasing population. Therefore,it's high time we did something about it.
Firstly,an effective way,I think,is to reserve water in a scientific way for future use.Secondly, new methods need to be developed to use the existing water resources, for example, turning sea water into fresh water.Thirdly,we must stop water pollution by st but not least,it's everyone's responsibility to make good use of water, such as recycling and saving water in our daily life.In conclusion, people around the world should be aware of the real situation of water shortage, protect the present water resources and explore potential ones scientifically.
That's all.Thank you.。
