When I was growing up,I was ashamed to be seen with my father. He was severely disabled and very short, and when we would walk together, his hand on my arm for balance(平衡),people would stare. If he ever noticed or was bothered,he never let on.
It was difficult to coordinate(协调)our steps—his slow, mine impatient—and because of that,we didn't say much as we went along. But as we started out,he always said,“You set the pace.I wil l try to adjust(适应)to you.”
He never talked about himself as an object of pity, nor did he show any envy(羡慕) of the more fortunate(好运) or able. What he looked for in others was a “good heart”,and if he found one,the owner was good enough for him.
Now that I am older,I believe that is a proper standard by which to judge people, even though I still don't know accurately what a “good heart” is.But I know the times I don't have one myself.
Unable to engage(从事) in many activities,my father still tried to participate in some way.I now know he participated in some things indirectly through me,his only son. When I played ball (poorly),he “played” too. When I joined the Navy,he “joined” too.And when I came home on leave,he saw to it(务必要) that I visited his office.Introducing me,he was really saying,“This is my son,but it is also me,and I could have done this, too,if things had been different.” Those words were never said aloud.
He has been gone many years now,but I think of him often.I wonder if he sensed my unwillingness to be seen with him during our walks. If he did,I am sorry I never told him how sorry I was,how unworthy I was,how I regretted it.I think of him when I complain about small affairs, when I am envious(羡慕) of another's good fortune, when I don't have a “good heart”.
At such times I put my hand on his arm to regain my balance, and say,“You set the pace.I will try to adjust to you.”

My Best Enemy
Once again,I was in a new school. So was a girl in my class named Lisa. That's where the similarity(同样) ended.
I was tall and she was small. My thick black hair had been recently cut short into an untidy(不整齐) style. Her natural blonde hair flowed to her waist and looked great.I was 12 and one of the oldest in the class while she was 11 and the youngest.I was awkward(笨拙) and shy.She wasn't.I couldn't stand her, considering her my enemy. But she liked me and wanted to be friends with me.
One day,she invited me over and I said yes—I was too shocked to answer any other way.My family had moved six times in six years, and I had never managed to develop any friendships. But this girl who wore the latest fashions wanted me to go home with her after school.
She lived in a fun part of town that had two pizza places,an allnight bookstore,a movie theater and a park.As we walked from the school bus stop through her neighborhood,I tried to guess which house might be hers. Was it the white one with the perfect lawn or the threestory house with a front porch?I got very surprised when she led me into an old apartment building. She lived on the fourth floor in a tworoom place with her mother, her stepfather, her two brothers and her sister.
When we got into the room she shared with her sister, she took out a big case of Barbies, which was my next surprise.I had never played with them.We sat on the floor, laughing as we made up crazy stories about the Barbies. We found out that we both wanted to be writers when we were older and both had wild imaginations. We had a great time that afternoon.
Lisa was loved by the whole neighborhood. The bookstore owners lent her fashion magazines;the movie theater gave her free tickets...Soon I was included in her magic world. We slept over at each other's house and spent every free moment together.

“Privacy” is translated as “yin si” in Chinese.Tr aditionally,in the Chinese mind,“yin si” is associated with(与---有联系) that which is closed or unfair. If someone is said to have “yin si”,meddlers(好事者)will be attracted to pry into his or her affairs. So people always state that they don't have “yin si”.On the contrary,Americans often declare their intention(意图) to protect their privacy.Their understanding of privacy is that others have no right to pry(窥)into things which belong to themselves alone and have nothing to do with others. One who is too curious(好奇) and who spreads rumors is said to violate the right to privacy.
In the evening,Sonia and I went to a bar for dinner. In China, when people mention bars, something bad usually comes to mind. But here, the bar was a quiet and tastefully laid out place.People spoke quite softly, afraid of interrupting their neighbors, and sat face to face as they drank, sometimes three or five persons sitting together.
This sort of atmosphere was totally different from my preconception(预想),so I wanted to take a picture.Sonia stopped me:“Don't you see these people are pouring out their hearts?Maybe they are colleagues(同事),friends,or lovers. They came here looking for a peaceful place free from interruption by others. They wouldn't want to leave any trace of their having come here.So taking their pictures would be a serious violation of their right to privacy.”
Is there privacy between husband and wife? One of Sonia's friends married a talented Chinese man,but recently she became so angry that she wanted a divorce. The reason was that her husband had opened one of her letters and looked through her purse. The husband didn't realize that this is not tolerated in the US.He thought that being a couple was like being one person;why couldn't he see the letter or the contents of the purse?Truly, everyone, even those living as a couple, needs room—not only in space, but in the heart.

D.Privacy is connected with something that is unfair and bad.
70.One of Sonia's friends wanted a divorce because________.
A.she thought her husband was not clever enough

七选五;
My mother is a diligent and kind woman. She is very busy from morning till night. As a teacher, she works hard. 71 Both my brother and I love her dearly(deeply)as she loves us.
My mother has been teaching math at a middle school in my hometown. She goes to work early in the morning and does not return home until late in the
afternoon. 72 She treats them with patience and teaches them well. For her excellent quality and very good teaching results, she has been elected as a model teacher several times.
73 Every day, when she comes back home from work, she sets about doing housework, sweeping the living room and bedrooms or cleaning the furniture, and putting everything in good order. She seems to be busy all the time. As she has been very busy working every day, she looks older than her age. But she looks as cheerful and happy as ever. Mother never buys expensive dresses for herself, but she often buys some inexpensive but high quality clothes for us. 74 She just eats a plain meal outside when she is too busy to cook herself. She lives a busy yet simple life, without any complaints.
Often she says to us, “work while you work, and play while you play. That is the way to be happy and gay(快乐). If you do not work, you will become lazy and be of no use to society”. What a piece of good advice this is! 75 This advice of hers will always serve as a guide to my behavior. My mother is great indeed, and I always feel proud of her.
A. She enjoys listening to classic music.
B. As a mother, she takes good care of us and gives us every comfort.
C. She loves her students and cares for them.
D. She never goes to expensive restaurants to enjoy meals.
