第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)A ROBOT companion for older people aims to promote activity and deal with loneliness by urging them to take part in digital and physical activities.
The ElliQ robot, made by Israel-based start-up Intuition Robotics, will be published at the Design Museum in London this week. ElliQ is a small desktop device that consists of a domed (拱形的) “body” and a separate detachable (可拆卸的) screen.
Created in collaboration with Swiss designer Yves Behar, the robot is able to encourage a degree of social engagement. Similar to home assistants like the Amazon Echo, people can simply talk to it, and there are visual clues that could be particularly helpful for those with hearing difficulties.
A key purpose of ElliQ is to act as an easy platform to access existing services such as social media, and messaging programs. For example, the device could alert the users that their grandchild has posted a new photo on Facebook, show it to them on the screen.
ElliQ can recommend activities voluntarily. It might ask if you’re interested in watching a video, for instance, or suggest a walk. It can also act as reminder to take medication.
Having a robot constantly offer suggestions could obviously get annoying, so the device uses machine learning to tailor these suggestions to individual preferences. If a suggestion is met with a positive response once, ElliQ might try it again. If not, it might change for a different tack.
1、Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.A robot companion for older people will strongly advise them to participate in digital and physical activities to be healthy.
B.The ElliQ robot is published at the Design Museum in London.
C.The screen of the ElliQ robot can be removed if necessary.
D.The ElliQ robot is created by Swiss designer Yves Behar and Israel-based start-up Intuition Robotics.

D.it can help those with hearing difficulties by offering visual clues.

22.(8分)Two summers ago I was about to turn fifty and wanted to do something I’d never done before. My daughter Bailey thought skydiving (跳伞) would be perfect for me. I can promise you that of all the things I was thinking of doing, jumping out of an airplane never came close to making the list. As I age, I seem to have developed a growing fear of heights.
After several requests from my daughter, I finally said yes and she looked almost shocked. I told a friend what we were doing, then we set off. We had a 3-hour drive to the jump site. We drove through some beautiful countryside, but then we passed a small cemetery(墓地). Then we passed another cemetery and another one. I asked if so many people died jumping out of airplanes in this area that they needed to keep building more cemeteries to bury all the bodies!
As we squeezed into the little plane, I tightly held the right hand of my partner Ronnie. The short ride to altitude was cruel f or me. As Bailey stepped to the door, she looked back at me and said “Dad, I’m sure you can do it!” I said yes as she rolled out. I immediately looked behind me and said “RONNIE I AM NOT FEELING GOOD!” He said, “It’s going to be great. Besides, it’s too late now anyway”, and we jumped out.
The next five minutes were some of the most amazing of my life. It was so beautiful and peaceful—except for the parts where I was screaming. I prayed to God for the parachute (降落伞) to open, but mostly I told Him how thankful I was for my life and being with me through good and bad.

23.(8分)Scientists think they have answered a mystery: How some ocean creatures got so huge so quickly.
A few million years ago, the largest whales, averaged about 15 feet long. Then seemingly overnight, one type of whale, the toothless baleen whale(须鲸类)became huge. Modern blue whales get as big as 100 feet. Nicholas Pyenson of the Smithsonian Natural History Muse um said, “Why is that?” ”It happened in the glance of an evolutionary eye, which makes it harder to figure out what happened,” said Graham Slater, lead author of the study. Their study has suggested an answer: Ice ages in the last 3 to 5 million years started it, changing the oceans and food supply for whales.
The researchers used fossil records of the smaller whales to create a family tree for baleen whales which include blue whales, humpbacks and right whales. Using computer simulations(模拟)and knowledge about how evolution works, they concluded that when the size changes started, the poles got colder, ice expanded and the water circulation in the oceans changed and winds shifted, Slater and Pyenson said cold water went deep and moved closer to the equator(赤道)and then eventually moved back up with small fish and other small animals that whales eat.
Baleen whale, which have no teeth, feed by eating huge amounts of fish they capture. Toothed whales, like sperm whales (抹香鲸), hunt individual fish, so the ocea n chants that made food less evenly spread out didn’t affect them as much. But baleen whales hunt schools of fish.
Olivier Lambert at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences calls it “a really convincing situation”. But he said the lack of fossils in certain time periods is an issue. As oceans warm from man-made climate change, the seas will be more like it was when the whales smaller and they will have a more difficult time surviving.
1、What does the author mean by “It happened in the glance of an evolutionary eye” in the second paragraph? A.The change of baleen whales happened too quickly.
B.The change of baleen whales was too difficult to explore.

A.Man-made climate change.
B.Its eating a huge amount of fish.

A.Sperm whales eat more food.
B.Blue whaler live much longer.
C.Sperm whales prefer to hunt schools of fish.

4、What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.There are no whale fossils now.

C.Global warming has threatened the whales.
D.Olivier Lamber thinks the study is perfect.
24.(8分)At first glance Esther Okade seems like a normal 10-year-old. She loves dressing up, playing with Barbie dolls and going to the park or shopping. But what makes the British-Nigerian youngster stand out is the fact that she’s also a university undergraduate.
Esther, from Walsall, an industrial town in the UK’s West Midlands region, is one of the country’s youngest college freshmen. The talented 10-year-old enrolled at the Open University, a UK-based distance learning college, in January and is already top of the class, having recently scored 100% in a recent exam.
“It’s so interesting. It has the type of maths I love. It’s real maths-theories, complex numbers, all that type of stuff,” she smiles. “I want to finish the course in two years. Then I’m going to do my PhD in financial maths when I’m 13. I want to have my own bank by the time I’m 15 because I like numbers and I like people and banking is a great way to help people.” she adds.

A year later, she got the A-grade she wanted. Then last year she scored a B-grade when she sat the Math A-level exam.
Not content with breaking barriers to attend college at just 10 years old, Esther is also writing a series of math workbooks for children called “Yummy Yummy Algebra.”

25.(10分)Today tropical rainforests are disappearing from the face of the globe. Despite growing international concern, rainforests continue to be destroyed at a pace over 80,000 acres per day. World rainforest cover now stands at around 2.5million square miles. Human activities have had an effect on much of this remaining area.
Deforestation(森林滥伐) of tropical rainforests has a global effect through species extinction, the loss of important ecosystem services and renewable resources, and the reduction of carbon sinks. However, this destruction can be slowed, stopped, and in some cases even reversed(逆转). Most people agree that the problem must be solved, but the means are not as simple as building fences around the remaining rainforests or banning the wood trade. Economic, political, and social pressures will not allow rainforests to continue to exist if they are completely closed off from use and development.
So, what should be done? The solution must be based on what is practical, not completely idealistic and depends on developing a conservation approach built on the principle of sustainable(可持续的) use and development of rainforests. Beyond the responsible development of rainforests, efforts to restore damaged forest lands along with the establishment of protected areas are key to securing rainforests for the long-term benefits they can provide for mankind.
Historic approaches to rainforest conservation have failed, as shown by the increased rate of deforestation. In many regions, closing off forests as untouchable parks and reserves has neither improved the quality of living or economic opportunities for the rural poor, nor stopped forest clearing by illegal woodcutters and developers.
The problem with this traditional approach to preserving wildlands in developing countries is that it fails to develop proper economic motives for preserving the forest. Local people and the government itself must see financial returns to prove the costs of maintaining parks from economic activities.
1、What has caused some species extinction in the tropical rainforests?
A.Humans' destroying the trees.
B.Carbon sinks being reduced.
C.Lacking renewable resources.
D.Fences not being built around the rainforests.
2、What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Tropical rainforests can be easily preserved.
B.Rainforests must be closed off to be better protected.
C.Human activities have had an effect on tropical rainforests.
D.Economic returns can make some difference in protecting tropical rainforests.
3、What is the author's attitude to tropical rainforest protection?
A.Indifferent.
B.Concerned.
C.Doubtful.
D.Puzzled.
4、What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To show the bad effects of deforestation.
B.To stress the importance of the rainforests.
C.To appeal for right ways to save the rainforests.
D.To introduce the fact of forests disappearing.

29、Dear Alex,
Knowing that you show great interest in the Dragon Boat Festival, I’m delighted to share something about it.
The Dragon Boat Festival, also called the Duanwu Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese lunar calendar. This festival is in honor of Qu Yuan, a poet who is said to have committed suicide by drowning himself in a river. For thousands of years, the festival has been marked by eating zongzi and racing dragon boats. Besides, people will hang healthy herbs on the front door to clear the bad luck of the house.
I hope the information is helpful and I'm expecting you in China.
Yours,
Li Hua。
