What will man be like in the future—
in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be differen t from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time .
Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred year s ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men ar e about three inches taller. Five hundred years is relatively a s hort period of time, so we may suppose that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of t he brain’s ability. As time goes by, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and finally we shall need our b rains more and more, and finally we shall need larger ones! T his is likely to bring a physical change too; the head, in particu lar the forehead, will grow larger.
Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger.
On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and
legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the sam e time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life.
But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the bo dy altogether in course of time because it does not serve a us eful purpose any longer. In the future, then both sexes are like ly to be bald.
Perhaps all this gives the impression that future will not be a v ery attractive creature to look at! This may well be true. All the same, in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with th oughts and motions similar to our own.
25. The passage mainly tells that_______________.
A. Man’s life will be different in the future
B. Future man will look quite different from us
C. Man is growing taller and uglier as time passes
D. Man’s organs(器官)functions will change
26. What serves as the evidence that man is changing?
A. Man has got stronger eyes now than he ever had.
B. Man’s hair is getting thinner and thinner.
C. Man has been growing taller over the past 500 years.
D. Man’s arms and legs have become lighter and weaker.
27. The change in man’s size of the forehead is probably bec ause_____________.
A. he makes use of only 20% of the brain’s capacity
B. his brain has grown larger over the past centuries
C. the other 80% of his brain will grow in due time
D. he will use his brain more and more as time goes by
28. It is implied that________________.
A. human beings will become less attractive in the future
B. less use of a bodily organ may lead to its degeneration (退化)
C. human beings hope for a change in the future life
D. future life is always predictable

You probably know you should say “please” and “thank you” a t restaurants. You probably know the rules of a library. You kn ow you should respect and be nice to your classmates. But do you have music manners?
Keep It Down! You have to notice the volume of your music. Y ou should not play your music so loud that everyone around y ou can hear it. Some people might even get angry. Usually, w hen you play the music loud on an MP3 player, other people c an’t hear the words of the song. They just hear a loud sound.
No one wants to listen to this. Very loud music can also be ba d for your ears. So even if you are alone when listening to you r MP3 players, you shouldn’t turn it up too high.
Take Them Off! You need to know when to turn your MP3 off and put it away. Libraries and schools don’t allow MP3 player s. There are other places, like museums, that don’t have rules , but it would be rude to have your MP3 player on. Sometimes , it doesn’t make sense (无意义)
to listen on your MP3 player. Why would you listen to music at a play, a movie or a sporting event? You would miss what is going on and others would wonder why you even came.
Take One Out! Once in a while it’s okay just to take out one e arphone and not the other. Imagine you are listening on your MP3 player when someone asks you the way. It would not be rude to take out one earphone, tell him the way, and put back the earphone and continue listening. You can also do this wh en you order food at a fast-
food restaurant or when you answer the telephone.
It’s Your Choice! There are times when you need to decide w hat is best. For example, some people can listen to music on t heir MP3 players when reading books, while others think it is disturbing. In cases like this, you need to do what seems right for you.
29. The underlined word “volume” in Paragraph 2 probably m eans “_________.”
A. the amount of a sound
B. the length of a song
C. the type of music
D. the color of an MP3 player
30. We should turn down the music when we are alone becau se loud music_________.
A. may annoy others
B. can hurt our ears
C. is bad for MP3 players
D. will make us tired
31. The main idea of this passage is about _________.
A. music lovers

Dear fellow students, good morning!
I am very glad to be here to give a speech on the topic of “Healthy habits”.
Healthy habits are important to our lives. On one hand, we sh ould take exercise every day. For example, we can walk to sc hool instead of taking a bus. Besides, every day we can spen d at least one hour playing ball games. On the other hand, our health depends greatly on our eating habits and lifestyle. We should avoid eating too much sugar and junk food like hambu rgers. What’s more, we should have regular meals every day and drink enough water. Last but not least, we must remembe r “Early to bed, early to ris e” is necessary to health.
