A lot of kids have dreams they’ll never achieve due to the limitations of their little bodies. They want to fly, or to become a dinosaur, or to learn how to act like Spiderman.
Luka Tavcar, 12, has muscular dystrophy (肌肉萎缩症) and is totally dependent on his wheelchair. Nevertheless, late last year, he had an inspired plan: to be photographed walking around and having fun.
He approached Matej Peljhan, an amateur photographer and a psychologist at CIRIUS rehabilitation (康复) center near Ljubljana, Slovenia, where Luka is a patient.
At first, Peljhan was perplexed. How could he photograph a boy who can not move or act in motion? “Luka wanted to see himself playing and having fun, but it seemed impossible,” he says.
Then Peljhan had a brainstorm: Luka could lie down on a piece of cloth and, with the help of an assistant, Peljhan would pose the boy as if he were jumping, climbing stairs, moving downhill on a skateboard, and playing basketball. Then Peljhan would shoot these images from above. The photos took about a month to produce; all were shot early this year.
Peljhan, who lost his right arm and left eye as a child, says his own disabilities motivated him to make the photographs. “I understand people with limitations,” he says.
He named the series “The Little Prince” after the French story by Antoine de Saint-Exupery in which a boy teaches a man about trust, hope, and friendship. Luka loves the photos.
Matej himself understands what it is like to live with limitations—he lost his right arm and left eye as a child.“Luka wants to stay positive and his imagination helps him forget his physical limitation,” says Peljhan. “He’s fragile, but he can see the world differently.”

A man enters a store to buy milk. He walks out of the store with milk. That is all—milk. At the same time, a woman enters the same grocery store also to buy milk. She buys it. But, she also buys chicken and lemons to make dinner that night. She also gets a bottle of wine for drinks with friends and a birthday card for her husband’s niece. And that is the difference between the female and male brains simply explained in a grocery store. Generally speaking, men do one thing at a time. Women do many. Doing many things at one time is often called “multi-tasking,” a very popular word these days.
Now scientific research supports this theory about male and female brains. A recent study has confirmed what we have known all along—men and women think differently.
Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania studied brain images of 949 people aged from 8 to 22 years old. They found that male brains have more connections on one side of the brain, or hemisphere. In the female brain, they found more activity and connections between the right and left sides of the brain. The left side of the brain i s known as the side of “reason”. The right hemisphere is known as the “creative” side.
Regina Verma is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. She co-wrote the report. She says when women are asked to do something complicated they might use different parts of the brain. But men generally use just one.
As a result, men generally deal directly with a problem. There is a strong connection between the “understanding” and the “action” parts of their brains. Women, however, might include other parts of the brain, like the part connected with “reason” and the part connected with sensitivity when solving a problem. Women take a less direct path to find a solution.
Thanks for your listening. I’m your announcer Anna Matteo.

Scientists have always been interested in the high level of organization in ant societies. American researchers have watched ants build life-saving rafts to keep afloat during floods. They also have documented how ant colonies choose their next queen—the female whose job is to produce eggs rather than seek food for others.
New technology is helping to improve researchers’ understanding of the insects. But there is still a
lot to be learned.
Fire ants living in Brazilian forests are perfectly at home in an environment where flooding is common. To save themselves, the insects connect their legs together and create floating rafts. Some ant rafts can be up to 20 centimeters wide.
David Hu who is a mechanical engineer with the Georgia Institute of Technology, also known as Georgia Tech, says, “If you have 100 ants, which means 600 legs, 99 percent of those legs will be connected to a neighbor. So they’re very, very good at maintaining this network.”
David Hu and other Georgia Tech researchers want to study ants and the secret of their engineering. They freeze ant rafts and then look at them with the help of computed technology, or CT, images. The pictures show that larger ants serve in central positions to which smaller ants hold. The larger ants form pockets of air that keep the insects afloat.
Scientists say small robots or materials that can change shape could be programmed in a similar way, working towards a shared goal.
Researchers at North Carolina State University are also studying ants. They examined how Indian jumping ants choose the leader of the colony when they lose their top female or queen.
51.The duty of the queen ants is to .
A.seek food

Richard Nares faced a parent’s worst fear when his son Emilio was diagnosed with leukemia(白血病) in 1998 and died from the disease two years later. But he managed to change his grief into charity by helping hundreds of families face the complex challenges of childhood illness, by giving them a lift. After his son died, he returned to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego and asked staff how he could help others. Their answer:transportation. Children diagnosed with cancer and their families must travel far and frequently to receive treatments, such as chemotherapy (化疗). And he found many children were riding the bus for over 4 hours to and from the hospital.
For some children, the chemotherapy treatments leave their immune systems so weak that they are unable to take germ-ridden public transportation.
Many parents don’t have the freedom to take unpaid time from work. Some single-parent families are forced to choose between sending their sick child on a bus to chemotherapy alone or leaving their children unsupervised.
What’s more, Richard saw how tough cancer was on many low-income families. So he decided to do something. In the beginning, he drove around the area in his Buick, giving families rides to and from the hospital, but soon more requests came in. With the help of nurses and social workers, he started the Emilio Nares Foundation to expand his work into a formal program, named Ride With Emilio.
Now, the Emilio Nares Foundation gives 2,500 free rides to children and families a year to several hospitals in Southern California. The foundation also provides support to families, providing bereavement (丧亲) and burial support.
Although he may be a hero, Richard also benefits from his work. Helping others brings him closer to his son.

One possible version:
Since I became a senior high school student, I’ve been interested in Chinese classical novels, which are the fruits of our ancestors’ wisdom hundreds or thousands of years ago. I like reading them so much that I take advantage of my limited spare time in weekends to enjoy reading them. However, preparing for the college entrance examination prevented me from spending more time on them. I have to practice intensively for the examination by doing endless exercises and attending various lectures in order to enter a satisfactory university or college.
I think I have done well in this entrance examination and I’ll likely enter a good university. If so, I’ll have enough time to enjoy those novels I like best. While in college, I’ll devote myself to reading as long as I have spare time.

M:Oh, the heat is unbearable! Didn’t you turn on the air-conditioner, Honey?
W:I did. But our air-conditioner doesn’t cool well!
(Text 2)
M:Excuse me. Could I smoke here, madam?
W:I’m sorry, but you see that my baby is sleeping here. Why don’t you go to the smoking area between Carriages 8 and 9? (Text 3)
W:Oh, that’s too bad! I just lost another 50 dollars in this stupid car.
M:I’m not surprised. It’s always out of order.
(Text 4)
M:What a nice piano! How wonderful!
W:Yes, it is. My father bought it for me last week. And I like it very much.
(Text 5)
M:Hello, Mrs White, what can I do for you?
W:I don’t know what’s the matter with me. I am always feeling tired. I am usually worn out at the end of the day.
(Text 6)
W:How can I help you, sir?
M:I need a suit, please.
W:We have sweat suits, casual suits, and business suits. Which kind do you want?
M:The last one.
W:Well, they come in three different price ranges. There are on-sale clothes, fashionable suits, and best-sellers.
M:What’s the price range for each?
W:On-sale clothes start at 30 dollars and go as high as 100 dollars. The fashionable suits on the second floor are between 250 and 1,500 dollars. Best-sellers are on the third floor, and they are between 50 and 500 dollars.
M:I can spend up to 75 dollars.
W:In that case, have a look at both the on-sale clothes and the best-sellers.
M:Where are the on-sale clothes?
W:Go straight down to the first floor.
M:OK. I’ll go there first.
(Text 7)
W:Darling, we have only one towel.
M:Shall I call room service?
W:Yes, and tell them to send up some breakfast to our room, too.
M:OK. What would you like for breakfast?
W:I think I’ll have some toast, a boiled egg, and coffee with cream.
M:But you usually have only a cup of milk for breakfast at home.
W:Well, when you don’t have to cook, you enjoy the meal more. Don’t you think so?
M:Yes. You always do so much for our family, dear. That’s why I always wanted you to have a holiday. You need a little relaxation.
W:You’re the most considerate husband in the world.
M:Thank you, and you are the most perfect wife in the world.
W:You’re too sweet, you know. Oh, can you help me with the hot water? I want to take a shower, but I don’t know how to turn the hot water on. I’ve never seen equipment like that in a bathroom before.
(Text 8)
Back to the news. Last Friday a storm hit two villages destroying fourteen houses. Seven others were so badly damaged that their owners had to leave them, and fifteen others had broken windows. One person was killed, and nine were badly injured and taken to hospital. A number of other people received small injuries. Altogether over two hundred were left homeless as a result of the storm.
A farmer said the storm began early in the morning and lasted over an hour. He was in the kitchen with his wife and his children when they heard a loud noise. A few minutes later their house fell down on top of them. They managed to climb out, but then he saw that one of his children was missing. He went back inside and found him safe but very frightened.
A woman said that her husband had just left for work when she noticed that her house was shaking. She rushed outside immediately with her children. There was no time for her to take anything. A few minutes later, the roof came down. Soldiers went to the area to help the people in trouble.
