Doctors at a Boston hospital last week performed the first full face transplant in the US, attaching a donor face to a 25-year-old man whose face
was severely burned when his head touched a high-voltage(高压的) line three
years ago.
A team of more than 30 surgeons and nurses worked for about 15 hours to
transplant the forehead, nose, lips, facial skin, underlying muscles and the nerves that power them and provide sensation(知觉)from a donor to Wiens, whose head came in contact with a high-voltage line on Nov. 13, 2008.
Bohdan Pomahac, the surgeon, said the team was not able to bring back Wiens’s eyesight. But Wiens should be able to regain up to 90 percent of normal sensation on the right side of his forehead, right cheek, most of his upper lip and his entire lower lip. Nerve damage was too great
for there to be more than tiny sensation in the left check and left forehead, Pomahac said.
Doctors say the goal of the operation was to improve Wiens’s ability to breathe, eat and talk and restore his face’s social expression.
When Wiens recovers, he will not look like he once did, nor will he look like the donor, but “probably somewhere in the middle,” Pomahac said. The match between the donor and the recipient (接受者) was made based on race, similar age and blood type, etc.
Pomahac said he was worried the operation would not be successful when he first saw Wiens. His injuries were covering so large that doctors weren’t sure there were enough remaining nerves or structures to connect to a new face.
Pomahac said he was determined to try his best because of what a patient with similar injuries had told him some years ago. That patient had numerous surgeries(外科手术), with only modest results. When Pomahac asked why the patient sought repeated surgery, he told the doctor, “I just want a taxi to stop when I’m waiting for one.”

My older sister filled out thirteen college applications. She sent them all around the country —to Seattle, Chicago, Philadelphia and Houston etc. Then she sat back and waited for the replies, for the big fat envelopes, confident in her perfect grades.
Three years later, my own applications was before me. They were all terrifyingly blank. I didn’t know what to say.
“What do you do in a typical day?” one question asked. How could I answer? The truth was that I stayed home all day. After my Mom dropped me off at school I would pretend to go inside, then slip back out across the soccer fields, catch the subway, and either go home or to the bookstore across the street. There I’d stay until my parents came home. When they asked if I wanted to go out, I’d tell them I’d had a busy day and was too tired. Forget extra courses. All I did was sleep, and when I couldn’t sleep, read.
“What do you see in your future?” asked another question. But I didn’t see anything. “You should apply to as many schools as you can,” said my dad, “Keep your choices open.”
He couldn’t know that all of my choices were closed. There was no way any college would accept me, no matter how smart I was, with weeks of school skipped and failing grades. Of course,
I couldn’t tell my dad that. I’d been lying to him — and everyone else — for months. I hid my report cards in a dark corner of my suitcase and deleted the concerned messages from my teachers off the phone.
So I took all of the applications and carefully put each one, mostly still blank, into an envelope. Sealed (封) them, addressed them, and showed them to my father. Thirteen applications, just like his other perfect daughter. We mailed them together.
One day, about a month later, I slipped home early from school, only to find my parents sitting on the couch with sad, serious looks on their faces. “We’re worried about you,” they said, “We know there’s something wrong. The school called and said you haven’t been there since last week.”

When several different people look at the same person, it is not unusual for each of them to see different things; when you alone observe one behavior or one person at two different times, you may see different things. The following are about some of the factors(因素) that lead to these different senses.
Firstly, e ach person’s senses of others are formed by his or her own cultural condition, education, and personal experiences.
Secondly, sometimes senses differ because of what we choose to observe and how we deal with what we’ve observed. It is not necessarily true that person sense is based on observations of a particular person. Your observations may be totally controlled by what others have told you about this person; or you may center mainly on the situation or role relationship. Most people do not use the same standard to measure their parents, their friends, and strangers.
Thirdly, s ometimes we see only what we want to see or don’t see what may be obvious to others because of our own needs, desires, or temporary emotional states. This is a process known as selective sense. Selective sense is obviously more difficult when contradictory(矛盾的) information is particularly obvious, but it can be done. We can ignore the stimulus “He’s basically a good boy so what I saw was not shoplifting(商店行窃).” We can reduce the importance of t he
contradictory informatio n—“ All kids get into naughty behavior. Taking a book from bookstore isn’t such a big deal.” We can change the meaning of th e contradictory informatio n—“It wasn’t shoplifting because he was going to pay for it later.”
68. The first factor given by the author that affects our sense is __________ .
A. experiences one learns from others
B. important measures taken by other people
C. cultural background and personal experiences
D. the abilities of one’s hearing and seeing sensors
69. While observing a particular person, ____________ .
A. children often differ from grown-ups in sense
B. one pays more attention to his / her advantages
C. one is likely to take all aspects into consideration
D. one tends to choose certain cues (提示) to look for
70. Observation of the same person by two people at the same time may differ because ______ .
A. their measuring standards are not the same
B. the time for observation is not long enough
C. either of them may be slow to catch information
D. they each express their impressions in different languages
71. The underlined word “stimulus” in Paragraph 4 refers to ______________ .
A. something attractive
B. selective sense
C. contradictory information
D. shoplifting

These days a green building means more than just the color of the paint. Green building can also refer to environmentally friendly houses, factories, and offices.
Green building means “reducing the impact (影响) of the building on the land”,
Taryn Holowka of the U.S. Green Building Council in Washington D.C. said.
According to Holowka, the building accounts for 65 percent of total U.S.
electricity use.
But green building can reduce energy and water use. Also, the buildings
are often located near public transportation such as buses and subways, so that people can drive their cars less. That could be good for the environment, because cars use lots of gas and give off pollution. Green buildings are often built on developed land, so that the buildings don’t destroy forests.
Marty Dettling is project manger for a building that put these ideas into action. The Solaire has been called the country’s first green high-rise building. According to Dettling, “We’ve reduced our energy use by one-third and our water by 50 percent.”
The Solaire cuts energy in past by using solar power. “On the face of the building we have solar panels(板) which change the sun’s energy into electricity,” Dettling explained. The Solaire also has lights that automatically turn off when people leave the room. In addition, the building has lots of windows, allowing people to use the sun for light during the day. The Solaire cuts water reusing it.
Not everyone is eager to move into a green building, however. Some people think that things like solar panels cost more money than more traditional energy sources. Anyhow, Holowka said, “It’s going to be big.”
72. In the second paragraph, the underlined words “the building” most probably refer to ____.
A. an ordinary building
B. an energy-saving building
C. a green-colored building
D. a building in Washington D.C.
73. A green building is often built on an area of land______.
A. which has thick forests around
B. where people of high income live
C. which has already been for buildings
D. where traveling around by car is most convenient
74. When saying “It’s going to be big”, Holowka means that green buildings_____.
A. will be more comfortable
B. will become popular in future
C. will be more environmentally friendly
D. will take the place of traditional building
75. What is the main subject discussed in the text?
A. Green buildings help save environment.
B. The Solaire serves as a model of high building.
C. Energy shortage calls for buildings of new design.
D. Dettling designed the first green building in the U.S.

One possible version:
Recently, a survey has been done on the readings among the students in different stages.
For the pupils, they prefer cartoons just because these books provide them with interesting characters. Junior students express their feelings directly by saying:“Love stories are our favorites.” Maybe dreams about life fill their minds. Unfortunately, burdened/ loaded with endless homework, senior students have to deal with all the textbooks. They hardly spare any time for some other readings besides the required famous literature. They are longing for more, though.
As far as I am concerned, we should focus more on the teens’ readings which should cover various materials. Despite heavy burdens, senior students should be involved in readings ranging from economics, politics as well as literature. Besides, humorous stories are popular in order to reduce the stress from exams.
To sum up, balance should be kept between study and other sources of absorbing knowledge.(136words)

W: So how many people are coming for the party tonight?
M: There’s just going to be six of us.
W: Oh, I thought there were going to be eight. Who isn’t coming?
M: Marcia and Paul called to cancel at the last minute. Paul is working late and Marcia isn’t feeling well.
W: That’s too bad. They’re such good company.

M: Oh, it’s OK . I’ll persuade them.
W: Really? I don’t think Dad will like the idea. A nd what will you do if the course is really difficult?
M: Easy. I’ll get some help from my teachers and other students.

W: Did you like the movie?
M: Mmm… to be frank, I didn’t think it was as good as the former ones, even though the scenery is brilliant. How about you?
W: I think the special effects were amazing. But I was a little bit confused, for the plot was too complicated for me. I tried hard to keep track of all the characters and figure out what was going on.
M: Did you read the books before watching the movie?
W: No. Did you?
M: Yes, I have read them all. I think it’s easier to follow for people who are already familiar with the characters. By the way, do you often go to the movies?
W: Yeah. I am a moviegoer and enjoy killing time in the theatre.
