第一节(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)
A
In the last 500 years nothing about people-not their clothes, ideas, or languages has changed as much as what they eat. Chocolate drink was first made from the seeds of the cacao (可可) tree by South American Indians. The Spanish introduced it to the rest of the world during the 1500s. And although it was very expensive, it quickly became popular. In London, shops where chocolate drinks were served became important places. Some still exist today. The potato is also from the New World. Around 1600, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe, where it soon was widely grown. Ireland became so dependent on it that thousands of Irish people starved when the crop failed during the years of 1845-1846, and thousands more were forced to go to live in America.
There are many other foods that have traveled from South America to th e Old World. But some others went in the opposite direction. Brazil is now the worl d’s largest grower of coffee, and coffee is an important crop in other South American countries. But it is native to Ethiopia. It was first made into a drink by Arabs during the 1400s. According to an Arabic story, coffee was discovered when a goat keeper named Lakdi noticed that his goats were eating red fruits on a coffee tree. He tried one and experienced the “wide-awake” feel ing that one third of the world’s population now starts the day with.

Willy, a merchant, returned home to his own country from a faraway continent, where he had succeeded making a small fortune by hard work. He found on arriving at the port that all his relatives were having a large party.
He was in such a happy mood and in the joy of the moment that he did not even
bother changing his grey flannel(法兰绒)suit which had become a little worn during
the trip home.
When he entered the brilliantly lit room, his relatives and friends gave him
a rather cold welcome because they had noticed his modest suit and immediately imagined that he had come back a poor man.
A young man who happened to be accompanying him was quite irritated at this and
said to Willy, “What a wonderful reception you have received from these people.
They have not even the intention of shaking your hand after all these years that
you h ave been away from home.”
“Just wait and see!” whispered Willy, “They will soon change their looks!” Saying this he slipped a precious ring on his finger. All of a sudden, the faces
of all those present lit up and immediately Willy was surrounded by so many people
that he didn’t know what to do. A man s hook his hand, a cousin threw his arms around
him, and he had so many invitations from the people present that he thought he would
be unable to make any other appointments for several years.
“Has this beautiful, precious ring of yours the power of magic people?” asked
the young man.
“Oh, no!” replied Willy, “They see in this glittering diamond ring something
that makes them think I am rich, and, unfortunately, they place wealth above everything else.”
“What blind peopl e!”exclaimed the young man. “It is not the ring that has drawn them to you but their desire for riches. Is it possible to appreciate more
a piece of yellow metal surrounded by little stones than the goodness of my Lord?
And indeed how foolish are people who place their trust in riches rather than in virtues!”

“Earthquake!” The word flashed in my brain. A roaring soun d filled my ears.
I tried to slide beneath my desk. The desk did a wild tap dance, slipping and sliding towards the centre of the room. I twisted my body and grabbed at the windowsill
(窗沿)behind me, somehow kicking free of my dancing chair. I tried to stand. My
legs skated away as if on a bucking escalator(电动扶梯).
My fingers shook, grasped and held the windowsill tightly. Somewhere through the roar sounded the terrified scream of some wounded animal. I looked behind me and tried to steady my gaze on the other kids but the scene was a dizzy nightmare (噩梦). Some of the class were sitting in the middle of the room, surrounded by chairs and d esks. One girl was screaming. A boy was trying to claw his way acr oss the floor to the door in a crazy overarm crawl.
My grip froze me to the windowsill.
I cried aloud, “I’m going to die! I’m going to die! Save me! I’m not ready to die! I’m not ready!” I hunched forward on my knees and pressed my face against my clenched fingers. I looked at the backs of fingers and stupidly noticed the fragile pale hairs growing out of the pores. The fingers would soon cease to exit. Somehow the impending horror of my death was too terrible to even cry about.
Suddenly, I became aware that the rocking h ad ceased. Perhaps I wasn’t going to die.
29. The roaring sound was made by _____.
A. a wounded animal
B. people screaming
C. children running
D. an earthquake
30. When the narrator clenches his fingers, he is ______.

My mind went blank when I saw the gun pointing against the car window as we pulled out of the garage. This can’t be happening to me. Then I felt the gun, cold, against my head, and I heard my friend Jeremy saying, “What do you want? Take my wallet,” but at the time I thought of nothing.
I remember being a little annoyed when the gunman pulled me from the car by the hair. I remember the walk to the house --- Jeremy, me, the two men with two guns.
I remember the fear and anger in the gunmen’s voices because Jeremy was being slow, and I remember wondering why he was being slow. I did not realize that Jeremy had thrown the keys into the bush. But I remember that sound of the gun hitting Jeremy’s head and the feeling as the man who had hold of my hair released me. And I remember the split second when I realized he was looking at Jeremy, and I remember wondering how far I could run before he pulled the trigger. But I was already running, and upon reaching the car across the street, I didn’t crouch(蹲伏) behind it but screamed instead.
I remember thinking there was something ridiculous and illogical about screaming “Help, help!” at eight o’clock on a Tuesday evening in December and changing my plea (恳求) to the more specific “Help, let me in, please let me in!” But the houses were cold, closed, unfriendly, and I ran on until I heard Jeremy’s screams behind me announcing that our attackers had fled.
The neighbors who had not opened their doors to us came out with baseball bats and helped Jeremy find his glasses and keys. In a group they were very brave. We
waited for the police to come until someone said to someone else that the noodles were getting cold, and I said politely, “Please go and eat. We’re OK.”
I was happy to see them go. They had been talking of stricter sentences for criminals, of bringing back the death penalty(处罚) and how the President is going to clean up the country. I was thinking, they could be saying all of this over my dead body, and I still feel that stiffer sentences wouldn’t change a thing. In a rush all the anger I should have felt for my attackers was directed against these contented people standing in front of their warm, comfortable homes talking about all the guns they were going to buy. What good would guns have been to Jeremy and me?
People all over the neighborhood had called to report our screams, and the police turned out in force twenty minutes later. They were ill-tempered about what was, to them, much trouble about nothing. After all, Jeremy was hardly hurt, and we were h opeless when it came to describing the gunmen. “Typical,” said one policeman when we couldn’t even agree on how tall the men were. Both of us were able to describe the guns in horrifying detail, but the two policemen who stayed to make the report didn’t th ink that would be much help.
The policemen were matter-of-fact about the whole thing. The thin one said, “That wa s a stupid thing to do, throwing away the keys. When a man has a g un against your head you do what you’re told.” Jeremy looked properly embar rassed.
Then the fat policeman came up and the thin one went to look around the outside of the house. “That was the best thing you could have done, throwing away the keys,” he said. “If you had gone into the house with them…” His voice became weaker. “They would have hurt her” --- he twisted his head toward me --- “and killed you both.” Jeremy looked happier. “Look,” said the fat policeman kindly, “there’s no right or wrong in the situation. There’s just luck.”
All that sleepless night I replayed the moment those black gloves came up to the car window. How long did the whole thing last? Three minutes, five, eight? No matter how many hours of my life I may spend reliving it; I know there is no way to prepare for the next time --- no intelligent response to a gun. The fat cop (条子)was right. There’s only luck. The next time I might end up dead.
And I’m sure there will be a next time. It can happen anywhere, anytime, to anyone. Security is an illusion(幻觉); There is no safety in locks or in guns. Guns make some people feel safe an d some people feel strong, but they’re fooling themselves.

A. they needed time to find baseball bats

35. What the author wants to tell us is that ________.

Now the earth is in bad condition. For example, in some places, the pollution is so serious that it causes many deaths. At the same time, many animals and plants are in danger because of the destruction of their habitats.
Luckily, we human beings have realized the problem. On April 22nd, millions of people across the world do something good for the earth. Some clean up beaches and water, some pick up rubbish, and others give speeches to call on more people to take action. But can we save the earth only by one day’s work? The future of our planet depends on our efforts. What we should do is to make every day Earth Day. Only by taking good care of it every day can we hope to live in harmony with nature.。
