The Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional Chinese festival that celebrates the harvest and the reunion of family and friends. It falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, when the moon is full and bright. The festival has a history of over 3,000 years and is one of the most important and festive occasions in China.
The origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival can be traced back to the ancient worship of the moon goddess, who was believed to bring peace and prosperity to the people. According to legend, there was once a hero named Hou Yi, who shot down nine out of ten suns that scorched the earth. He was rewarded with a magic elixir that could grant him immortality. However, he did not want to leave his wife Chang'e behind, so he gave the elixir to her for safekeeping. One day, when Hou Yi was out hunting, a villain named Peng Meng broke into his house and tried to force Chang'e to hand over the elixir. To protect the elixir and her husband, Chang'e swallowed the elixir and flew to the moon. Hou Yi was heartbroken when he returned and saw his wife's silhouette on the moon. He offered fruits and cakes to the moon in memory of his wife. Since then, people have followed his example and worshipped the moon on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month.
The Mid-Autumn Festival has many customs and traditions that vary from region to region. The most common ones are eating mooncakes, admiring the moon, lighting lanterns, and making offerings to the moon. Mooncakes are round pastries with various fillings, such as lotus seed paste, red bean paste, nuts, ham, or egg yolk. They symbolize the unity and harmony of the family. People enjoy mooncakes with their relatives and friends while watching the moon, which is said to be the brightest and roundest on this night. Lanterns are also a popular feature of the festival, especially for children. They come in different shapes, colors, and sizes, and some even have riddles on them. People light lanterns and hang them on trees, windows, or doors, or carry them around the streets. They also try to solve the riddles on the lanterns, which are usually related to Chinese culture, history, or literature. Another tradition is to make offerings to the moon, such as fruits, flowers, incense, or candles. People pray to the moon for good luck, health, happiness, and safety.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is a time to appreciate the beauty of nature, the bounty of the harvest, and the bond of family and friends. It is also a time to express gratitude, love, and hope. It is a festival that reflects the rich and diverse culture of China and its people.
