The reading passage and the listening talk whether the subject in professional painting is Jane Austen. The author in the reading states that the subject of the painting is Jane Austen. Apparently, the speaker disagrees with it and believes that the arguments of the passage are questionable and not convincing at all. Firstly, according to the reading passage, the Austen's family asserted clearly that the subject was Austen in 1882. However, the speaker obviously counters the statement by saying Austen's family allowed to use the portrait in 1882, when Austen was already dead for almost 70 years. The descendant of Austen's family did not actually see Austen herself, so they may not recognized her accurately. Secondly, the article indicates that the subject of the painting is Austen since the face feature of the painting resembles the one in Austen's sister Cassandra's sketch. Such viewpoints are significantly different from the listening, which mentions that the portrait could very well be that of a relative of Austen's, a fact that would explain the resemblance between its subject and that of Cassandra's sketch. The extended Austen family was very large and many of Jane Austen's female cousins were teenagers in the relevant period or had children who were teenagers. And some of these teenage girls could have resembled Jane Austen. In fact, many experts believe that the true subject of the portrait was one of those relatives, Marianne Kempian, who was a distant niece of Austen's.
Thirdly, regarding the patient style, the passage suggests that the painting was closely connected to the painter Humphrey, who was active between 1780s and 1790s, when Austen was the age of teenager. However, the speaker casts doubt on the perspective by saying that the period of the painting was much later because the stamp at the back of the painting suggested the blank canvas was sold by William who only started selling canvas when Austen was already 27 years old, which is older than the teenager girl shown in the painting.。
