People from Britain and Ireland first came to live in Australia in 1788. They brought different dialects (方言) of English with them. These different kinds of English began to mix and change. The newcomers soon began to speak with their own typical accent (口音) and vocabulary. More and more people came to Australia during the Gold Rush in the 19th and 20th centuries. Some came from Britain and Ireland; others came from non-English speaking countries. Australian English continued to grow and change.
Australian English has also been influenced by American English. During the Second World War, there were many American soldiers staying in Australia. More importantly, American television shows and music have been popular in Australia since the 1950s.
Australians use many words that other English speakers do not use. The famous Australian greeting, for example, is G’day! A native forest is called the bush and central Australia is called the outback. Many words were brought to Australia from Britain and Ireland. For example, mate means “friend”, and it is still used in Britain. Some of these words have changed in meaning. Some words have come from Australian original languages, many of which are names for animals, plants and places, like dingo and kangaroo.
Australian spelling comes from British spelling. In words like organise and realise, -ise is the expected and taught spelling method. In words like colour, favourite, -ouris the normal, but nouns such as the Labor Party and Victor Harbor are spelled with -or. Program, on the other hand, is more common than programme.
There are also differences in the definition (定义) of words Australians use in different parts of the country. For example, football means “rugby” in New South Wales and Queensland, but “Australian rules football" in
everywhere else in Australia. In New South Wales, a swimming costume is called a cossie or swimmers, while in Queensland it is called togs and bathers in Victoria.
4. What does paragraph 1 mainly talk about?
A. Reasons why English is important.

C. Various aspects that Australian English has been influenced.
D. Changes of the accent and vocabulary in English.
5. According to the text, which of the following is spoken only by Australians?

6. Which is the following can best describe Australian English?

B. Multicultural and creative.
C. Crazy and boring.
D. Unchangeable and mixed.
7. What might be the best title for the text?

Scientists have discovered a new behaviour among bumblebees that tricks plants into flowering early.
When lack of pollen, bumblebees will bite little by little on the leaves of flower-less plants. The damage seems to fool the plant into flowering, sometimes up to 30 days earlier than normal.
With their hairy appearance and special sounds, bumblebees are hard to miss in gardens all over the world. Their hairy bodies make them excellent pollinators for crops like tomatoes and blueberries. They are among the first bees to appear each year and work a long season.
But despite their key role, bumblebees, like many other pollinators have seen their numbers decline suddenly in recent decades. One recent study pointed to climate change, reporting that an increasing number of hot days in Europe andNorth Americawas raising local bumblebees extinction rates.
But researchers have now made a discovery about bumblebees that could have something to do with their
long term survival. Scientists inSwitzerlandfound that when the bumblebees were out of pollen, they started to bite on the leaves of plants that hadn't yet flowered. They used their mouths to cut clearly-shaped holes in the leaves. But the creatures didn't eat the material or use it in their nests.
The damaged plants responded by flowering earlier than normal--in some cases up to 30 days ahead of schedule. Researchers also found that the bee damaged plants flowered 30 days earlier than undamaged plants and 25 days earlier than ones damaged by the scientists.
“I think everything that we've found is consistent with the idea that the bumblebees are damaging the plants and that that's an adaptation that brings flowers earlier and that benefits the bees,” said Dr Mark Mescher, one of the authors from ETHZurich.
8. How do bumblebees fool plants into flowering earlier?
A. By making use of the hot weather.
B. By putting the false flowers on the leaves.
C. By attacking the leaves of flowerless plants.
D. By taking away the pollen from the other flowers.
9. What's bumblebees’ key role?
A.Making plants flower early.
B. Spreading pollen to flowers and plants.
C. Sending information about weather change.
D. Finding out whether the plant has flowers.
10. What has happened to bumblebees in the past the years?
A. They are becoming homesick.
B. They are not as friendly as before.
C. There is a sharp decrease in number.
D. They have been busy year by year.
11. What's Dr Mark Mescher's attitude towards the behaviour of bumblebees?
A. Uncaring.
B. Skeptical.
C. Tolerant.
D. Objective.

Compared to dogs, cats are often considered to be aloof(冷漠的)with respect to their human owners. It is usual for them to be indifferent(无动于衷的)when humans calltheir names. Are we sure that they don’t understand human voices at all?
A recent study published in the journal of Scientific Reports suggests that we’ve been fooled. Japanese scientists found that cats can recognize their names if their owners regularly use them. In the study, scientists recruited 78 domestic cats. They played recordings of voices of their owners saying five words: the first four words were random nouns thatresembledtheir names while the final word was the cat’s name. Then they observed the cats’ responses, if there were any.
Most of cats moved their ears or heads when they heard their names, while they made no response to other
words. That suggested, “cats were paying attention to you, what you say and what you do,” John Bradshaw, an expert on human-animal interactions(互动)at the University of Bristol, UK, told The Times. “And cats were just as good as dogs at learning,” she added.
In the study, when people called their names, cats often associated (联系) the words with rewards, such as food or play, or with “punishments” such as having a bath or going to the vet . This made cats sensitive (敏感的) to words. After the cats had been called several times, they could respond to the words. But the scientists added that while dogs have evolved(进化)to follow their owners’ orders, cats have not. Although cats appear to be distant, they do have special relationships with their owners.
According to study co-author Atsuko Saito, cats have evolved not to show their emotions as a survival method. One example is illness, which they tend to hide because “in the wild, no one can rescue them” and predators (捕食性动物) are more likely to pay attention to them, Saito explained.
However, technology may help bridge the communication gap between cats and us. There are now mobile apps available to explain what their meows mean. So, the next time you hear “meow, meow”,your cat may be telling you: “Hi, you haven’t cleaned my litter box recently.”
12. What did the recent study find about cats?
A. Cats can recognize their names.
B. Cats are cleverer than dogs.
C. Cats learn more slowly than dogs.
D. Cats are willing to follow orders.
13. What does the underlined word“resembled”in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. were limited to
B. were different from
C. were similar to
D. were away from
14. Why do cats appear distant to their human owners?
A. They associate words with punishments.
B. They want to protect themselves from harm.
C. They are not sensitive to the human voice.
D. They don’t pay much attention to their surroundings.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. It is difficult to understand cats’ meows.
B. Interaction with your cats is very important.
C. Cats do have good relationships with their owners.
D. We may know cats better with the help of technology.

In one 2013 study, she and her team recruited more than 2,000 11- to 14-year-olds living inLondon,England. They analyzed their emotions and behavior over the previous two weeks in the research. The researchers scored each kid’s answers for signs of depression, and found adolescents who ate the most junk food were nearly 50 percent more likely to show signs of depression.

Everyone has a dream. We are on the way to achieve it whether the way is smooth or toughly. As Senior 3 student, I have the same dream as my classmates that I can be admitted to an ideal university. In the past three years, I have done everything I can to equip myself with that I have learnt from my teachers. Not only have I enjoyed the pleasure of study but also I have got closer to my dream. Anxious and pressure did discourage from
me at times. Besides, with the encouragement of my teachers and classmates, I think I’ll make it.
I’m sure that there has still a long way to go to achieve my dream. No matter how challenged it is, I’ll make it come true. As the proverb said,” Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
