13、He was 11 years old and went fishing every chance he got at his family’s small house on an island in the middle of a New Hampshire lake.
On the day before the bass(鲈鱼)season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching sunfish and bass with worms. Before long, when his pole doubled over, he knew something huge was on the other end. His father watched with admiration as the boy skillfully worked the fish alongside the bank and he very successfully lifted the tired
fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass.
The boy and his father looked at the handsome fish, the fish jumped up and down in the moonlight. The father looked at his watch. It was 10 P.M. -- two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, then at the boy. “You will have to put it back, my son," he said. “I have never seen such a big fish before.” cried the boy. “There will be other fish,” said his father. “The b oy looked around the lake. No other fishermen or boats were anywhere around in the moonlight. He looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he caught the fish, the boy could tell by his father’s voice that the decision was not be changed. He slowly worked the hook out of the lip of the huge bass and lowered it into the black water.
That was 34 years ago. And he has never again caught such a beautiful fish as the one he landed that night long ago. But he does see the fish again and again --every time he comes up against a question of ethics(伦理). For, as his father taught him, ethics are simple matters of right and wrong. 15、The journey began this morning almost an hour later than I had planned, although I had completed my packing
before eight o’clock. I was quite clear about the fact that once I left, my house would stand empty for the first time since the day it was built. It was a strange feeling and perhaps explains why I was leaving so late. I walked around the house many times over, checking to see that all was in order.
It is hard to explain my feelings once I did finally set off. As I drove further and further from the house, I found everything looked unfamiliar(不熟悉的) to me. I began to have a feeling of nervousness mixed with excitement. I took a turning and found myself on a road circling the edge of a hill. I could sense the steep(陡峭的) drop to my left. I felt a sense of alarm that I was perhaps not on the correct road at all, but speeding off in the wrong direction. It was only the feeling of a moment, but it caused me to slow down. And even when I was sure I was on the right road, I thought I had to stop the car for a moment to think carefully.
I stopped my car and walked out of it. On the one side of the road, small trees grew closely together, while on the other I could now see the countryside far away and a town nearby.
I waked a little way along the roadside, when I heard a voice behind me. Until this point I had believed myself quite alone and I turned in some surprise. Sitting on the large stone was a thin, white-haired man. He called to me again and gave me a sign to join him. For a moment, I took him for a homeless man, but then I saw he was just some local man enjoying the fresh air and summer sunshine.

A.He wanted to look at the beautiful hill carefully.
B.He suddenly feared that he might get lost.
C.The road became steeper and steeper.
D.He realized he was driving too fast.
3.What can we infer about the white-haired man?
A.He was surprised to see the writer. B.He greatly enjoyed being alone.
C.He used to be homeless. D.He was a nature lover.
4.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.The writer’s purpose in starting the trip.
B.T he writer’s courage in traveling alone.
C.The writer’s mixed feelings about his trip.
D.The writer’s experience of driving on the hill.

16、Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse, and when he arrived in this hard world, it was very doubtful whether he would live beyond the first three minutes. He lay on a hard little bed and tried hard to start breathing.
Oliver had his first fight without much help from the two people present at his birth. One was an old woman, who was nearly always drunk, and the other was a busy local doctor, who was not paid enough to be very interested in Oliver’s survival. _______.
However, Oliver finally drew his first breath, and then announced his arrival to the rest of the workhouse by crying loudly. His mother raised her pale young face from the pillow(枕头) and said, “Let me see the child, and die.”
The doctor turned away from the fire, where he had been warming his hands. “You must not talk about dying yet,” he said to her kindly. He gave her the child to hold. Lovingly, she kissed the baby with her cold white lips, then looked wildly around the room, fell back—and died. “Poor dear!” said the nurse, hurriedly putting a green glass bottle back in the pocket of her long skirt.
The doctor began to put on his coat. “The baby is weak and will probably be in danger,” he said. “If so, give it a little milk to keep it quiet.” Then he looked at the dead woman. “The mother was a good-looking girl. Where did she come from?”
“ She was brought here last night,” replied the old woman. “She was found lying in the street. She’d walked some distance, Her shoes were worn to pieces. Where she came from, where she was going to, or what her name was, nobody knows.”
The doctor lifted the girl’s left hand. “The old story,” he said sadly, shaking his head. “No wedding ring, I see. Ah! Good night.”
And so Oliver was left with only the drunken nurse. Without clothes, under his first blanket, he could have been the child of a king or a beggar (乞丐). But when the woman dressed him later in hard cotton clothes, yellow with age, he looked exactly what he was—an orphan (孤儿) in a workhouse, ready for a life of sadness, hunger, and neglect (忽略).
Oliver cried loudly. If he could have known that he was a workhouse orphan, perhaps he would have cried even more loudly.

19、Hello, teachers and schoolmates. It’s my honor to be here and talk about my views about how to keep safe at school. It’s necessary to obey the rules in P.E class or in the swimming pool. We shouldn’t carry anything dangerous with us, like knives. After class, we’d better try our best to guard against any possible danger. Please don’t play dangerous games or chase each other. It’s i mpolite to bully classmates who are short or small. Sometimes we may also feel stressed. Listening to music and doing some sports will make it easier for us to relax ourselves.
When we are in trouble, we can always ask our teachers for help. I am sure they are willing to offer advice. Besides, posters can be put up to help students know more about how to keep safe at school. If everyone can pay more attention to safety, we are sure to have a safe and wonderful school life.。
