Four“Fun facts”that are complete lies, but you believe them
No.1You can see the Great Wall of China from space
This seems right, doesn’t it?The Great Wall of China is huge, after all,and you can see large things from far away. But even from a low orbit,it’s pretty much invisible(看不见的)to the naked eye,and not exactly easy to pick out with an advanced camera lens.Strangely, this myth(谬论) existed before we even went into space,so it had the opportunity to become a“fact”before it could even be checked. There are many other man-made objects visible from space, but because the Great Wall is made from rocks gathered in the surrounding area,it doesn’t stand out against the landscape enough to be visible. How Stuff Works helpfully suggests that China could paint the wall in hot pink to fix the matter.
No.2Einstein failed at school
Einstein, the modern archetypal genius(天才),failing at school is a“fact”which serves as an encouragement to under-performing schoolchildren and is repeated by motivational speakers wanting to make some point about failure and success. It would be fairly comforting if true, but reality doesn’t tend to care about how comfortable you are. There are versions of this myth focusing on maths, but in either case,it’s just not true. The myth seems to result from the fact that the grading system used in his school was changed the year after he left—from1being the highest mark to6being the highest.Einstein got1s,but to anybody looking back at his grades,it would seem like that meant he’d failed.
No.3______________________
Many people claim that if you wake someone when they’re sleepwalking, the shock of finding themselves not in bed will lead them to suffer a heart attack or otherwise do some serious damage. In actual fact, waking somebody who is sleepwalking does them no harm whatsoever. They might be a little confused. In fact, they could hurt themselves by continuing to sleepwalk freely, for obvious reasons. So,it’s better to guide a sleepwalker back to bed without waking, but if you do wake him,it won’t do any harm.
No.4Sharks don’t get cancer
This fact has gained acceptance despite having merely been invented as a reason for selling people shark cartilage pills as a cancer cure.Firstly, even if it was true that sharks didn’t get cancer, that wouldn’t mean that using a part of it was a cure or treatment for cancer. There were some initial positive results, but they were also gained with other animal cartilages and didn’t translate into a
reliable treatment. In short, eating shark cartilage pills does nothing for cancer patients. And to pile more stupidity on top of it,sharks clearly do get cancer.
54.Why are we unable to see the Great Wall directly in space?
A.The colour of the rocks is not hot pink.
B.Advanced cameras are not employed.
C.It’s too small to stand out from far away.
D.The Great Wall is made from nearby rocks.
55.What does the underlined sentence in No.2mean?
A.Failure is the mother of success.
B.Reality has something to do with fantasy.
C.Success and failure should be both experienced.
D.Assumption is one thing, but reality is another.
56.Which of the following may be the subtitle of No.3?
A.Sleepwalkers might be at a loss
B.Sleepwalkers might attack others
C.Waking sleepwalkers will harm them
D.Waking sleepwalkers will shock them
57.Who are more likely to benefit from the lie“Sharks don’t get cancer”?
A.Drug providers.
B.Health advisors.
C.Cancer patients.
D.Shark researchers.

Foreign visitors to the UK might be disappointed when they learn that not everyone there speaks like Harry Potter and his friends. There’s an assumption by many non-Brits that everyone in Britain speaks with what’s known as a Received Pronunciation(RP,标准发音)accent, also called “the Queen’s English”.While many people do indeed talk this way, most Britons speak in their own regional(区域的)accents.Scouse,Glaswegian and Black Country—from Liverpool,Glasgow and the West Midlands—are just three of the countless non-RP accents British people speak with. There are even differences in accents between towns or cities just30kilometers apart.
But besides disappointing foreign visitors, not speaking in an RP accent may mean a British person is judged,or even treated differently,in their everyday life.In a2015study by The University of South Wales,UK,videos of people reading a passage in three different UK accents were shown to a second group of people. The group then graded how intelligent they thought the readers sounded. The lowest-graded accent was Brummie, native to people from Birmingham,a city whose accent is considered working class.“Specific regional accents are often thought of as low class and belonging to groups without fame,”Lance Workman, leader of the study, told The Telegraph.“It is clear that many of those with regional accents are still hitting a glass ceiling.”
But English-learners who want to sound more British shouldn’t go straight for RP,as many do. In fact, doing the opposite may even give you an advantage.Kong Seong-jae,25,better known as “Korean Billy”,is an Internet celebrity from Seoul. After studying in the UK,he picked up several regional accents. He’s now famous for his online videos, where he shows off the various accents he’s learned.“British people usually get really excited when I use some of their local dialect words, and they become much more friendly.I think it makes a bit of connection between local people and foreigners to speak in their local accent,”he said.
So if you’re working on perfecting your British accent, try to speak like someone from Liverpool,Glasgow or Birmingham. You may not sound like Harry Potter, but you are likely to make more friends.
58.What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?
A.Intelligent British people speak the Queen’s English.
B.Foreigners expect to hear the Queen’s English in the UK.
C.Harry Potter and his friends speak with different accents in the movie.
D.Received Pronunciation is more widely used than regional UK accents.
59.According to the study by the University of South Wales,UK,__________.
A.people tend to associate accents with social class
B.people in Birmingham belong to working class
C.Brummie is the most used regional accent in the UK
D.people’s intelligence can be graded by the way they read a passage
60.What does the underlined phrase“hitting a glass ceiling”probably mean?
A.Escaping failures.
B.Gaining successes.
C.Meeting problems.
D.Overcoming difficulties.
61.The writer uses the example of Kong Seong-jae in order to show__________.
A.the importance of connecting with people

C.the right way to judge people by their accents
D.the significance of learning the English language

Mark’s brother,Jamie,rang Mrs.Grady’s doorbell.“You know her better than I do,Mark.You do the talking.”
“Hi,Mrs.Grady,”said Mark when their neighbor opened her door.“Would you like us to shovel(铲雪)your sidewalk and driveway?”
Shoveling was Jamie’s idea,a way to earn enough money for the new Ocean Kingdom video game that came out the next day.
Mrs.Grady touched her hand to her heart.“That would be wonderful, boys.I think the job is getting to be too much for me.”
“It will cost10dollars,”Jamie said.
“If that’s OK,”Mark added.
“Oh dear.”Mrs.Grady sounded disappointed.“I haven’t been able to get to the bank.I can offer homemade cookies, but I realize that’s not what you had in mind.”
Mark was going to say that Mrs.Grady could pay them another time, but Jamie cut him off.“We’ll come back later.”①
As they struggled through the snow out of Mrs.Grady’s driveway,Mrs.Grady stood at her window, watching them.
At the same time,Mark was confused. She didn’t look like the person who’d come to his rescue last summer when Mr.Dunn’s collie(牧羊犬),Goldie, escaped from her backyard.②Goldie had just wanted to play, but Mark didn’t feel comfortable around big dogs. And Goldie had boxed him in between the wooden fence and the cedar hedge.
③Then Mrs.Grady’s front door had flown open.Mrs.Grady must have seen him
from across the street.“Hold on,Mark.I’m coming!”Her apron had flapped in the wind like a banner as she strode across the street holding a kitchen broom.“Goldie!”she’d called. As soon as Goldie had turned her head,Mrs.Grady had slipped between Mark and the dog.She wasn’t much taller than Mark, but she’d stood firm as a rock in front of him as she flung her arm out toward Mr. Dunn’s house.“Goldie,go home!”Then she’d swept her broom to hurry the dog along.“Get!”Goldie had obeyed._④
When Mark’s father had appeared at their side,he’d said to Mrs.Grady,“That was very brave! Thank you.”
Mrs.Grady had laughed.“It was nothing.Good neighbors watch out for each other, don’t they?”
And now Mrs.Grady needed Mark as much as he’d needed her last summer.
He smiled and waved at Mrs.Grady, then thrust his shovel deep into the snow.He lifted snow over his shoulder.
“Hey!”Jamie shouted.“What are you doing?”
Mark couldn’t explain about Goldie and watching out for neighbors.“I like Mrs.Grady’s cookies,”he said and scooped up another shovelful.
“It’ll take you all day,”his brother sighed.“We’ll never get that game.”
Mark shrugged and kept digging.
He heard Jamie’s annoyed sigh and then, surprisingly, the bite of Jamie’s shovel against the snow.Mark grinned.Jamie had known all along it was the right thing to do.
“Once the other neighbors see the good job we’ve done, they’ll line up to hire us,”said Jamie.“We’ll make money soon enough.”As usual,he had it all worked out.
62.Mrs.Grady sounded disappointed mostly because__________.
A.She couldn’t afford to pay Mark and Jamie
B.Mark and Jamie wanted to get paid for shoveling
C.She realized Mark and Jamie disliked her cookies
D.Mark and Jamie wanted the money for a video game
63.Which blank is the sentence“Mark had tried to call for his dad,but his tongue seemed
locked behind his teeth.”most likely to be put in?
A.①
B.②
C.③
D.④
64.What do we know about the brothers?
A.Mark is kind and Jamie is selfish.
B.Mark is helpful and Jamie is rude.
C.Mark is easy-going and Jamie is shy.
D.Mark is grateful and Jamie is innocent.
65.What is the best title for the passage?
A.The right thing.
B.The heavy snow.
C.A money-making plan.
D.A friendly neighborhood.

It’s growing increasingly common to see pets at work, especially at smaller companies settings in New York City.LinkedIn has178results for“dog friendly”jobs in NY,which probably means they either have one kind of“office dog”or multiple employees may bring their dogs in.Big names like Google,Mashable, and Amazon have pet-friendly plans that welcome these companions into the office on a daily basis.Smaller companies are following suit by allowing dogs into the workplace seeing this action as a non-financial award. It helps create an atmosphere of work friendliness and a recognition of job devotion of the incoming workforce.
The benefits are surely obvious:pets help reduce stress and may increase communication and socialization and there is no shortage of research to this effect.Approximately60%of Americans own a pet. It’s not surprising therefore that there is a cultural shift toward permitting free access for pets in spaces. There has been a lot of research on the impact that pets have on children, the elderly, the sick, and prisoners. For example, pets may help the emotional development of children by putting them in a situation where they learn how to care for others.Pets have been shown to help elderly Americans remain social and mobile, and may reduce depression in this population.
In another study,it was found that the presence of a companion dog in a group work setting encouraged participants to be more cooperative, communicative, and friendly toward each other than in groups where there was no companion dog. This supports the proposal that pets may help break down barriers(障碍)to social interaction by providing a pathway to conversation.
While the evidence indicates some positivity,it’s not completely true.In a survey on the stress levels, productivity, and organization perception among people who brought their dogs to work at a company in North Carolina, about half of those bringing their dogs to work reported the dog was important to their productivity, while the remaining half gave a neutral(中立的)response. The majority of dog owners who did not bring their dogs to work and non-pet owners reported a neutral response as well.In both groups,however,approximately20%reported that the dog’s presence was helpful and20%reported it was a barrier to productivity. In other words, most people who had exposure to a pet at the office reported no noticeable effects.

第七部分书面表达(20分)
One possible version:
Recently, our school has conducted a survey on students sleeping hours. As is shown in the chart,only10%of the students sleep eight hours daily.Another20%spare about7hours for sleep every day.Sadly, there are70%of the students who sleep less than7hours.
Why do students lack enough sleep? It is assumed that too much homework and overuse of mobile phones before sleep are two important contributing factors.
Action should be taken to solve this problem. It is considerate of our teachers to assign less homework so that students can save more time for sleep. In addition, students are forbidden to use digital devices when lying in the bed.Instead,we can do some physical exercises to have a sound sleep.
In short,a good amount of sleep is of great importance to us.(124words)
