Four schoolchildren from Belgrav e, England w ere out on their bikes on W ednesday even ing. Unexpectedly, they saw an elderly man grasping for breath in the street. They tried to call the police and ambulance service, but their phones w e re not w o rking, due to netw o rk problems.
Before the Polish man became unconscious, the children kept him calm w h ile they flagged dow n( 招停) a
passing driver. The children used w ords they had picked up from their Polish classmates to translate the injured man’s answ e r to the driver ’s questions. Gary, 10, and his six-year-old sister, Lily, stayed w i th the man w h ile Thymus and Ow e n, both 11, led the ambulance to the spot w h ere he lay. Soon the man w a s taken to hospital.
The fantastic four children w ho came to the aid of the elderly man deserve the high est respect for their quick think ing and courage in an emergency situation. They are a credit not only to themselves, but to their families and their school. And it is great to be able to hear such a positive story about young people.
What is not so positive about th i s story is the fact that several adults apparently w a lked by w i thout stopping to help. This seeming indifference to an emergency situation is a w ell-noted phenomenon w h ich psychologists
sometimes refer to as“the bystander effect”.Research suggests that w hen a group of people w itness an emergency,
people are lik ely to assume that somebody else w ill intervene and they feel that the burden of responsibility is lifted from their shoulders.
Perhaps the answ er to this sort of thing is to introduce a “Good Samaritan”law. This already exists in France and places, a legal responsibility on people w ho w itness an emergency situation to help out as long as they can do
so. This certainly seems to remove any doubt about w ho bears the burden of responsibilit y for offering assistance—
everybody!
24. What can w e learn about the elderly

B. He fell from his bike and got injured.
C. He w as taken to hospital by a passing
driver. D. He recovered consciousness in

26. The underlined w o rd “intervene” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to “”.
A. be curious
B. go on
C. get involved
D. give up
27. In France, if an emergency happens to someone, .
A. offering help to him is required by law
B. people have the right to leave the scene

D. the w i tnesses w i ll be punished if the rescue fails

Whenever w e see a button, w e w a nt to press it because w e know that something w i ll happen. This is true in most cases, for example, on a doorbell. But s o me buttons are actually fake, like the “close” button on a lift.
Many people are in the habit of pressing the “close” button because they don’t have the patience to w a it for the lift doors to shut. But lifts ’“close” buttons are a complete trick, at least in the US-the doors w ill not close any faster no matter how hard you press.
It started in the 1990s w h en the Americans w i th Disabilit i es Act w a s passed in the US, making sure that all lifts stayed open long enough so that people w i th disabilit i es could enter. Only US firefighters and repairmen can use the buttons to speed up the door-closing process if they have a code or special keys.
But to normal lift riders, the buttons aren’t completely useless. According to psychologists, fake buttons can actually make you feel better by offering you a sense of control.
“A sense of control is very important. It reduces stress and increases w e ll-being,” said Ellen J. Langer, a psychology professor at Harvard Un iversity. Experts also added that a lot of buttons that don ’t do anything exist in our lives for this same purpose.
For example, pedestrian crossw a lk buttons don’t live up to their names either. Pressing them used to help make the traffic signals change faster, but that w a s before computer controlled traffic sign a ls w e re introduced.
But psycholog i sts found it interesting that even w h en people are aw a re of these litt le “w h ite lies”, they still continue to push fake buttons because as long as the doors eventually close, it is considered to be w o rth the effort.
28. What is the author ’s purpose in w r iting the text?
A. To describe different fake buttons.
B. To explore the functions of fake buttons.
C. To analyze various habits of pushing
buttons. D. To explain the disadvantages of
fake buttons.
29. What can w e learn about the “close” buttons on a lift in America?
A. They w ere designed for a sense of
control. B. They w ork w hen people press
them hard.
C. They never speed up the door-closing process.
D. They take the safety of the disabled into account.
30. What can w e infer about pedestrian crossw a lk buttons?
A. They help computers w o rk faster.
B. They can make people feel
better. C. They can control the traffic signals. D. They help pedestrians cross
safely.
31. Which may be the best title for the passage?
A. Buttons in the USA
B. Buttons Alw a ys Lie
C. Buttons May not W ork
D. “Close” Buttons on Lifts
D
When asked about happiness, w e usually th ink of something extraordinary, an absolute delight, w hich seems to get rarer the older w e get.
For kids, happiness has a magical quality. Their delight at w inn ing a race or getting a new bike is unreserved(毫不掩饰的).
In the teenage years the concept of happiness changes. Suddenly it’s conditional on such things as excitement, love and popu lar ity. I can still recall the exc itement of being inv ited to dance w ith the most attractive boy at the school party.
In adulthood the things that bring d e ep joy—love, marriage, birth—also bring responsib i lity and the r i sk
of
loss. For adults, happiness is complex.
My defin it ion of happiness is “the capacity for enjoyment”. The more w e can enjoy w hat w e have, the happier w e are. It’s easy to overlook the pleasure w e get from the company of friends, the freedom to live w h ere w e please, and even good health.
I experienced my litt le moments of pleasure yesterday. First I w as overjoyed w hen I shut the last lunch -box and had the house to myself. Then I spent an uninterrupted morning w r iting, w h ich I love. When the kids and my husband came home, I enjoyed their noise after the quiet of the day.
Psychologists tell us that to be happy w e need a mix of enjoyab le leisure time and satisfying w ork. I
don’t think that my grandmother, w ho raised 14 children, had much of either. She did have a netw ork of close friends and family, and maybe this is w h at satisfied her.
W e, how e ver, w i th so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, have turned happiness
into
one more thing w e’ve got to have. W e’re so self-conscious about our “right” to it that it’s making us miserable. So w e chase it and equal it w i th w e alth and success, w i thout noticing that the people w h o have those things aren’t necessarily happier.
Happ i ness isn’t about w h at happens to us—it’s about how w e see w h at happens to us. It’s the skillful w a y of
finding a positive for every negative. It’s not w ishing for w hat w e do n’t have, but enjoying w hat w e do possess.
32. What can w e learn about the author from Paragraph 5
and 6?
A. She cares little about her ow n
health. B. She enjoys the freedom of
traveling.
C. She is easily pleased by things in daily life.
D. She prefers getting pleasure from housew o rk.
33. What can be inferred from
Paragraph 7?
A. Grandma often found time for social gatherings.
B. Psychologists think satisfying w o rk is key to happiness.
C. Psychologists’ opinion is w e ll proved by Grandma’s case.
D. Grandma’s happiness came from modest expectations of life.
34. People w ho equal happiness w ith w ealth and
success .
A. are more likely to be happy
B. are at a loss to make correct choices
C. stress their right to happiness too much
D. consider pressure something blocking their w a y
35. What can be concluded from the
passage?
A. Happy is he w h o is content.
B. Success leads to happiness.
C. Each man is the master of his ow n fate.
D. Happiness lies betw e en the positive and the negative.
第二节(共5 小题,每小题2 分,满分10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Protect Y our Ears from Loud Music
Spending too long listening to loud music can caus e permanent damage to your ears, resulting in problems such as tinnitus (耳鸣) and hearing loss. How e ver, many music lovers are not aw a re of how important it is to protect their ears.
A survey led by Action on Hear i ng Loss show e d many people experienced dullness of hearing or ringing in the ears after listening to loud music.
36 The next morning or a couple of days later, your hearing may gradually return to normal but
over
time, w ith continued exposure, there can be permanent damage. The risk of damage to hearing is based on how loud the music is and how long you listen to it for. If you can’t talk to someone tw o meters aw ay w ithout shouting, the noise level could be damaging. The dangers to hearing are just as serious at an open air music festival as they
are in an indoor nightclub. 37 At 140 decibels (分贝) your ears start hurting.
Action on Hearing Loss advises people on how and w h y they should protect their hearing w h ile en j oy ing music at concerts and clubs. It recommends simple precautions suc h as w e aring special earplugs, standing aw a y from the speakers, and taking regular breaks from the loudest areas.
38 DJs and musicians have been w earing earplugs for years and many recommend them to fans. These earplugs are designed specifically for clubs and don’t muffle (使听不清) sound. There are different types of earplugs available. 39 This means you can still hear the music the w a y it is, but at a low e r volume.
Anybody’s hearing can be damaged by loud music and nobody can harden their ears against that damage.
If you think you’ve toughened up your ears to loud music or become used to loud music, it ’s possible you have already suffered some damage. 40 The best solution is to protect your hearing in the first place.
A. Many people like to hear loud music .
B. Once hearing is gone, it’s gone for good.
C. These are the first signs of hearing damage.
D. Earplugs are the music industry’s best-kept secret.
E. Most of them w o rk by reducing the noise level that reaches your ears.
F. If the noise level in this city is very high, some people w i ll feel uncomfortable.
G. V olumes of 137 decibels have been recorded near the music stages at some music festivals.
