AI is really smart computer software that can think and learn kind of like a human brain. It's being used in so many cool ways to help us get where we need to go faster and smoother. Let me explain!
First up, AI is a huge help for driving cars and trucks.
Self-driving vehicles use AI systems with cameras, sensors and computing power to operate the steering, brakes and acceleration all on their own. They can see and identify things like traffic lights, pedestrians, other cars and road hazards. Then the AI software makes decisions on the best paths, speeds and movements to get to the destination. Pretty neat, right?
My parents are looking into getting a self-driving car soon. They say it will be so much less stressful than regular driving. The AI can navigate through traffic jams and construction zones way better than a human driver. And if we go on a long road trip, my parents won't get tired from hours of driving. The AI can take over so they can just relax!
AI also helps a ton with public transit like buses and subways. Transit systems use AI to keep vehicles on schedule and reroute them around delays or disruptions. AI can monitor things like passenger loads, travel times, bus bunching issues, and more. It can then automatically adjust schedules, routes and vehicle distributions to operate as efficiently as possible.
Last summer, my family went to visit my aunt in a big city and we rode the subway a bunch. The transit app we used had this cool AI assistant that planned out our routes and told us exactly which trains to take and where to transfer based on
real-time data. It made using the subway system super easy, even for visitors like us. No more stressing over maps and timetables!
Speaking of apps, AI is also built into popular driving apps and navigation tools these days. The map software uses AI to analyze current traffic conditions across the entire road network. Then it calculates the best routes and estimated travel times for each trip. The AI can also re-route you if it detects a faster path due to changing conditions.
Whenever my mom is driving us somewhere, she just asks her phone "What's the best way to get to the library?" and it gives her door-to-door directions avoiding any backups and
slowdowns. It's like having an expert navigation system without needing to buy an expensive dedicated device.
For longer drives, apps with AI can be even more helpful. AI looks at things like location data, calendars, schedules and routines to predict things like when you'll need to stop for gas, food or bathroom breaks. Then it can suggest the best stops and detours right when you'll need them. How cool is that?
Another way AI has made transportation easier is through smart traffic light systems. AI software analyzes real-time traffic video and data to optimize the timing of red and green lights. It can sense areas of heavy congestion and adjust the light patterns to improve traffic flow through those areas.
The city near my grandma's town upgraded all their traffic signals with AI optimization a couple years ago. My dad says the drives through the city are way smoother now without as many stops and bottlenecks. And emergency vehicles can even get smart traffic light priority to open a clear path when they need to rush somewhere.
AI is transforming airports and flying too! Many airports use AI security cameras to watch for unattended bags, identify individuals on watch lists, monitor wait times and crowds, and detect any irregularities or potential threats. Then the AI systems
can alert staff to address issues before they become bigger problems.
My aunt is a pilot and she told me that AI is also used to plan optimized routing for airline flights. AI analyzes huge amounts of data like weather patterns, airspace restrictions, aircraft performance and winds to calculate the flight paths that will be fastest, most efficient and provide the smoothest ride.
She said AI is even starting to be used for traffic management in the skies! AI systems can safely direct takeoffs, landings and air traffic flows for maximum throughput at busy airports. Sort of like those smart traffic lights but for airplanes instead of cars. Crazy, right?
Finally, one of the coolest ways AI helps with transportation is personal AI assistants. These are kinda like smart speakers, except specifically focused on travel and mobility. You can use voice commands or prompts to get AI help with things like:
Getting step-by-step transit directions by voice
Checking real-time traffic conditions along your route
Finding available parking spots and reserving one
Looking up travel restrictions or requirements
Identifying points of interest like restaurants or gas stations
Calculating trip costs for fuel, tolls, etc.

My family just got one of these AI travel assistants installed in our car. It's been so handy to just say "Hey Travel Assistant, how's traffic looking to grandma's house?" or "Find me a good diner to stop for lunch." Instead of my parents having to look things up on their phones while driving. The assistant does it all by voice with its AI smarts!
