A woman was walking on the street with lots of roses to sell and a tired expression in her eyes. Many people were around her but they most probably didn’t want to buy roses tonight. My husband and I walked past her, and then walked back. I love flowers, but roses are far from being my favorite.
But this was not about the rose.
We bought ten roses. “Give her one,” said my husband. I gave one to her for the pricelessness of a sudden smile.
We walked on with nine roses. We were wondering if we would hand them out to random (随意的) strangers or wait to give someone sad-faced.
Soon we walked into a street with shop windows full of very nice but expensive things. Then we turned onto a side street. No more shop windows, only mostly darkened office buildings, except for one lighted door through which we saw an older woman with a duster (抹布) in her hand. She was cleaning up after a long day.
Both of us smiled. We knew whom the roses to give. We crossed the street and knocked on the door. She felt surprised when I told her that I wanted to give her the flowers. “They’re for you, because we were walking by and saw you working so hard and thought you might like to, take these home with you.” I said.
A smile appeared on her face, she was looking at the roses in a way that made them seem mo re beautiful than I’d thought them a minute ago.

“Gift” comes from the old Germanic root for “to give”. It meant an act of giving, and then turned into the thing being given. In Old English it meant the dowry given to a brid e’s parents.
“Present” comes from French. A present is the thing presented or given. But from the 13th century, the two words were in use for the idea of something given to others without paying.
However, they still have some differences in meaning and usage.
“Gift” has more meanings. Gifts can be talents. For example, you can have the art gift or a musical gift Gifts can be intangibles (无形的东西). There is the gift of understanding or the gift of a quiet day.
But we don’t use presents for things like this. P resents are real objects. If your whole family gave donations (捐款) to pay for your college on your birthday, would you say “I got a lot of presents?” It doesn’t exactly sound wrong, but since you never hold these donations in your hand, “gifts” seem to fit better.
“Gift” can also act like an adjective to be put in front of another noun. What do you call this kind of shop where you can buy presents? A gift shop. What do you call the basket of presents that you can send to others? A gift basket. “Present” can’t be used like this. We may have gift boxes and gift cards, not present boxes or present cards! “Gift” is used more often than “present” in modem English. “Present” also means “the time now”.
()34. We can use the following expressions EXCEPT _____________.
A. Bill has a gift for sports
B. Mary got into a present store
C. Jack has received lots of birthday gifts
D. Rosa enjoys shopping at present
()35. What can we know about the words “gift” and “present” from the passage?
A. They both have the same meaning from the beginning.
B. “Present” is used more often than “gift” in modem English.
C. We can call the basket of gifts sent to others “a present basket”.
D. They’re both used for describing some thing given to others for free.
()36. What does the passage mainly want to tell us?
A. “Gift” has more meanings than “present” in English.
B. “Gift” and “present” come from different language families.
C. “Gift” and “present” have some differences in meaning and usage.
D. “Gift” and “present” have similar meanings, but people prefer to use “gift”.
()37. Where can we probably read the passage?
A. In a fashion magazine.
B. In a travel guide.
C. In a newspaper.
D. In a sports magazine.
D
Do you know anything about email?
Email is a kind of communication that is changing, for the worse, the way we write and use language, say some communication experts.
“Email has helped the spread of careless writing habits,” says Baron, a professor at an American university. She says the poor spelling, grammar, punctuation (标点符号) and sentence structure in emails show the growing unconcern about the way we write. Baron argues that we shouldn’t forgive (原谅) and forget the poor writing in emails. “The more we use the email, the more it becomes the normal way of writing,” the professor says.
Others say that though it has poor writing, email has done what several generations (代) of English teachers couldn’t do. It has made writing fashion able again.
“Email is a new communication technology,” says Ian Lancashire, a professor of English at Toro nto University. “It fills the gap (缺口) between spoken language and the formal (正式的) methods of writing. It is the purest form of written speech.”Lancashire says email can help people who are usually afraid of writing to get their thoughts flowing easily onto a blank screen. He says this is because email is close to speech. “It’s like a circle of four or five people around a campfire,” he says.
Still, he accepts that this freedom to express themselves often gets people into trouble. The number of emails sent in a day almost is the number of letters mailed in a year. But more people are recognizing the content (内容) of a typical email message is not often exact.
()38. What can we know according to Baron?
A. Email changes the way people communicate in everyday life.
B. People should check the email many times before sending it.
C. More people don’t take the mistakes seriously when writing an email.
D. Email has become a normal way of writing.
()39. What does the underlined word “it” refer to?
A. Email.
B. The poor writing.
C. The good writing.
D. The communication technology.
()40. Ian Lancashire thinks _________.
A. people don’t like to use emails
B. it is helpful to people to use email to express themselves
C. emails are harder to write than letters
D. people should remember the mistakes in emails
()41. What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. People should stop using email to communicate.
B. People have different opinions about email.
C. People should learn to write email correctly.
D. People have realized the, importance of good writing.

A ban (禁令) on pit bulls (a type of dog) in Montreal that animal protection groups have been against will be rolled back later this month. Valerie Plante said that she would put an end to the ban. The ban was first put into place by former mayor Denis Coderre.
In 2016, Coderre’s government passed a law. It banned people in Montreal from getting pit bulls. The law allowed people who already owned pit bulls to keep them, but owners must pay a $150 permit fee and cover the dogs’mouths and noses in public.
The Montreal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) strongly went against the new rules. They said that such rules would cause animal shelters (庇护所) to kill some of their animals.
The Montreal SPCA started a battle (斗争). And it caused some rules to be changed. A change was that the city couldn’t give a killing order because of a dog’s appearance. The ban appeared to be in response to (对……做出反应) the death of Christiane Vadnais, who was killed in an attack by her n eighbor’s dog. After the dog was called into question, a DNA test found that the dog was a pit bull, the CBC reported. Vadnais’s brother, Gaston, and sister, Lise, have spoken out and said they are disappointed that the rules were being lifted. Lise Vadnais told CTV that she believed the change would lead to more deaths in the future. “To reduce dog bites, we need to look at all dogs, because pit bulls aren’t dogs that are more dangerous than others; all dogs are possibly dangerous,” Craig Sauve, an officia l, said.
Valerie’s decision is celebrated by people in Montreal. It shows Montreal is a welcoming city for pet owners.
()42. After knowing about the new rules, how did the Montreal SPCA react?
A. They were very excited.
B. They fought against the rules.
C. They expected to know the reason.
D. They thought the rules could keep the citizens safe.
()43. According to the passage, the cause of the ban was probably that _________.
A. people thought pit bulls were dirty
B. people thought pit bulls were dangerous
C. pit bulls were unpopular among the locals
D. pit bulls were connected with some serious diseases
()44. Which of the following shows Craig Sauve’s opinion?
A. Pit bulls shouldn’t be treated differently.
B. All dogs shouldn’t be allowed to go outside.
C. D og owners should be responsible for their dogs’ bites.
D. Measures should be taken to stop dogs from biting people.
()45. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Montreal Is Ending Its Ban on Pit Bulls.
B. Montreal Considers Dogs Dangerous to People.
C. Montreal Is to Set Strict Rules on Keeping Pit Bulls.
D. Montreal Becomes a Welcoming City for Pet Owners.

Dear Jesse,
I’m so glad to receive your email. In your email, you said you are interested in our Chinese traditional arts, which really excited me. So I’m happy to introduce some to you. As you know, China is a country with too many traditional arts, such as Beijing Opera, shadow puppet plays, paper cuttings and Chinese knots.
The Chinese knot which you are most interested in, is usually made of a thin rope, in the shape of an animal, a flower or a Chinese character with a special meaning. Red ropes are usually used because red is a lucky color for us Chinese, so we Chinese often carry Chinese knots with us or keep them at home because they are thought to bring us happiness and good luck.
Dear Jesse, I really expect you will come to China soon to know more about our great traditional arts and spread our cultures in your country.
Yours,
Li Ming
