阅读下面短文,按句子结构的语法性和上下文连贯的要求,在空格处填入一个适当的词或使用括号中词语的正确形式填空,并将答案填写在答题卷标号为41-50的相应位置上。

I attended a birthday party in 1991. My teacher was then 59 years old. But her fellow teacher said that we41 (celebrate) her 39th birthday! We were all 42 (surprise) and puzzled.
After the party I 43 (tell) by the fellow teacher that American women have a special saying about 44 (birth). If a woman is 45 forty, oreven if she is eighty, her birthday is always the 39th. If she is more than thirty, her birthday will be the 29th. And in her 46, it’s the 19th. They usually have their “real〞birthday when they are 47 twenty.
This shows that American women, 48 (especial) elderly women, are very sensitive about 49ages. But my teacher always says, “We want to be younger.〞So about the age of western women, my advice is 50 if you don’t know it, don’t ask about it; if you really know it, don’t mention it.
三、阅读〔共两节,总分为40分〕
第一节阅读理解〔共15小题;每一小题2分,总分为30分〕
A
These days, going green is all the rage. Universities, often the very bastions of green thinking and research, have begun to take a look in the mirror and examine their own practices, including those in their science laboratories. Not surprisingly, most could stand to waste less and get greener. Indeed, responsible scientists should start thinking about how their daily work
consumes energy, and what they can do to be more energy-efficient.
This isn't necessarily a simple task. Principal investigators have plenty on their plate already, with research, grant applications, hiring and, in some cases, teaching duties. And now they have to shrink their carbon footprint. What, my little lab?
It turns out, though, that labs waste plenty. A traditional fume hood (通风橱) uses as much energy in a year as three US households, as a recent Nature article points out (see Nature 445, 590–591; 2007). The US Department of Energy's Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois spends $1 million per month on electricity.
Several groups have taken notice. In Britain, a student group called People and Planet ranked the greenest UK campuses and published the list in The Times Higher Education Supplement this month. The group rated factors such as a 'green travel plan', an institution's efforts to organize transport plans, and their success at getting energy from renewable sources. LeedsMetropolitanUniversity came top.
In the United States, a government-sponsored association, Labs21, helps advise scientists on efficient laboratory design and equipment. In December of last year, American university and college presidents announced a Climate Commitment (a promise to do something). Institutions that sign up take action to fight against climate change. The promise has 280 signatories so far.
Scientists and their laboratories are not the major wrong doers in un-green practices. But it makes sense that they're part of the solution — which means adding 'getting green' to an already long list of daily tasks.
51. What's the meaning of the underlined phrase "all therage" in the first paragraph?
A. angry
B. exciting
C. tiring
D. popular
52. Why does the writer take the US Department ofEnergy's Fermilab for example?
A. To attract public attention.
B. To show some labs are energy-inefficient.
C. To make science labs get greener.
D. To point out scientists should be responsible.
53. What do we know about LeedsMetropolitanUniversity?
A. It is a university famous for being green.
B. It is the greenest university in UK.
C. It has no "green travel plan".
D. It seldom reuses materials.
54. which of the following can be the title for thepassage?
A. The traditional science lab
B. Ways to make labs
C. The importance of getting green in labs
D. Green problems of some science labs
55. According to the passage, which of the following iswrong?
A. Scientists are busy in their daily life.
B. Many institutions sign up to fight against climate change.
C. Scientists and their labs help to solve the ungreen problem.
D. Scientists and their labs should largely be responsible for the ungreen problem.

The National Trust in Britain, together with similar voluntary organizations, plays an
increasingly important part in the preservation for public enjoyment of the best that is left unspoiled of the British countryside. Although the Trust has received practical and moral support from the government, it is not a rich government, supported by public taxes. The Trust is a voluntary association of people who care for the unspoiled countryside and the ancient sites and historic buildings of Britain to preserve them for the permanent enjoyment of the public.
It is a charity which depends for its existence on voluntary support from members of the public. The Trust has 160,000 members in England, Wales and Northern Ireland who pay a small subscription each year, and its primary dutiesare to protect for the nation places of great natural beauty and places of historical interest and preserve them from the damages of modern development and extinction.
The attention of the public was first drawn to the dangers threatening the great old houses and castles of Britain by the late Lord Lothian, who in 1935 said that, as a result of taxation and estate duties, most of these ancient and historical houses were under sentence of death. When Lord Lothian died he left his great seventh-century house and all its contents to the Trust together with the 4,500-acre park and estate surrounding it. This gift attracted wide publicity and it st arted the Trust’s “Country House Scheme〞. Under this scheme, with the cooperation of the Government and thanks to the generosity of the general public, the Trust has been able to save and make accessible to the public about one hundred and fifty of these old houses, together with their often very valuable contents. Whenever possible, the Trust seeks to preserve these as living realities rather than as dead museums. It is the view of the Trust that the families who gave them to the nation and whose ancestors created them make the best possible persons in charge.
In addition to country houses and open spaces, the Trust now owns some examples of ancient wind and water mills, gardens, Roman antiquities, farms and small villages, as well as complete villages. In these villages no one is allowed to build, develop or disturb the old village environment and all houses maintain their original sixteen-century style. The public is asked to respect the peace, beauty and wildlife there.
