U. S. colleges face a “perfect storm” of problems as rapid school fee costs rise, opportunities for graduates drop, and employers complain they cannot find enough workers with key technical skills. One solution may be found in the growing number and quality of online classes.
Online classes are now taught by many top universities and offer everything from computer programming to the science of cooking. Many classes are either free or inexpensive, and are updated more quickly than regular college curriculum(课程). That’s important to the millions of students who learn technical and other skills from Lynda. com. Co-founder Lynda Weinman said, “A lot of software is changing constantly and new software is being invented, and those sorts of things cannot easily make their way into college curriculum.”
Instead of the professor lecturing to students, who then do research, study, and homework alone, many online classes turn that around, according to student and blogger John Haber, who said he was taking enough online classes to earn a four-year college degree in just one year. “They are watching the lectures at home as homework, and when they get to class, they are having more active discussions, or interactions with the teachers or working on projects,” he explained. And some predict future classes may be a combination of online lectures and professors helping students work through difficult problems in person.
College marketing expert Chris Cullen, of the Infinia company, said competition from online choices, and concern about costs, would change universities. “The consumer demands, ‘you give me a reason to believe that my money is best spent at your college, ’” he said. Cullen sai d top schools with strong reputations may expand in an online world, but less selective, less famous universities may struggle to attract students and their payments.
21. Why does John Haber choose online classes?
A. Because it is the professor who gives them lectures in online classes.
B. Because he can do research, study and homework alone.
C. Because professors can help students work through difficult problems in person.
D. Because he can get a college degree in an efficient way.
22. According to Chris Cullen, colleges ________.
A. will be changed
B. can make sure that their consumer’s money are best spent
C. will be more and more famous
D. may struggle to attract students
23. What would be the best title of this passage?
A. Many problems are challenging U. S. colleges
B. Online Classes May Force Changes at Universities
C. The advantages of online classes
D. The combination of online lectures and professors helping students in person

When I was an education official in Palo Alto, California, Polly Tyner, the president of our school board, wrote a letter that was printed in the Palo Alto Times. Polly’s son, Jim,had great difficulty in school. He was classified as the educationally disabled and required a great deal of patience on the part of his parents and teachers. But Jim was a happy kid with a great smile that lit up the room. His parents knew his academic difficulties, but always tried to help him see his strengths so that he could walk with pride. Shortly after Jim finished high school, he was killed in a motorcycle accident. After his death, his mother sent this letter to the newspaper.
Today we buried our 20-year-old son. He was killed instantly in a motorcycle accident on Friday night. How I wish I had known when I talked to him last that it would be the last time.If I had only known, I would have said, “Jim, I love you and I’m very proud of you.”
I would have taken time to count the many blessings he brought to the lives of the many who loved him. I would have taken the time to appreciate his beautiful smile, the sound of his laughter, his genuine love of people.
When you put all the good qualities on the scale and try to balance all the irritating phenomena such as the radio which was always too loud, the haircut that wasn't to our liking, the dirty socks under the bed, etc, your angry feelings won’t amount to much.
I won't get another chance to tell my son all that I would have wanted him to hear, but,
other parents, you do have a chance. Tell your young people what you would want them to hear if you knew it would be your last conversation. The last time I talked to Jim was the day he died. He called me to say, “Hi, Mom! I just called to say I love you. Got to go to work, Bye.” He gave me something to treasure, forever.
If there is any purpose at all for Jim's death, maybe it is to make others appreciate more of life and to have people, especially members, take the time to let each other know just how much we care.
You may never have another chance.
24. According to the passage, we know that .

D. suggest people taking the chance to express their love in time

Sometimes ideas do not appear when you are concentrating your attention and mysteriously appear when you are not. Modern science recognizes this as a result of incubating(酝酿)the problem in your subconscious(潜意识)yet can’t account for why it occurs.
When you quit thinking about a subject and decide to forget it, your subconscious mind doesn’t quit working. Your thoughts keep making associations. This is why you’ve experience d suddenly remembering names, getting solutions to problems you’ve forgotten about, and ideas out of the blue when you are relaxing and not thinking about any particular thing.
You may try solving a problem with your subconscious mind by writing a letter to it. Now let go of the problem. Don’t work on it. Forget it. Do something else. This is the incubation stage
when much of what goes on occurs outside your focused awareness, in your unconscious. Open the letter in two days. The answer might magically pop into your mind.
An advertising agency was under pressure to come up with a marketing campaign. Bert, the creative director, wrote the following letter which he addressed to his Subconscious mind.
Secret Expert,
I need to come up with a new marketing program to introduce a new season of television shows. I’m interested in some kind of campaign that will capture the audience’s attention more than one time. Is there something people need that we can advertise on? What kind of products, foods and services should we investigate? I need your idea about a fresh approach to advertising.
Thanks, Bert
Bert mailed the letter to himself and when he read what he had written, he got his brainstorm, which was to advertise on “eggs”. Somehow an association between “foods”, “need” and “fresh approach” inspired the thought of using “fresh eggs to advertise.” He arranged to put the ad for the television shows on eggs—some thirty million.
The consumers look at a single egg at least a few times, when they buy the eggs at the store, when they transfer them to the refrigerator, and when they crack them open. It’s unlike any other ad medium in the world, because you’re looking at it while you are using it.
28. You remember names though you are not thinking about them because your subconscious
mind ________.
A. stops working
B. is still working
C. is full of names
D. improves your memory
29. During the incubation stage, your focused awareness _________.
A. doesn’t work
B. controls your thoughts
C. waits for an answer
D. helps your unconscious
30. Which of the following was included in Bert’s letter to his subconscious mind?
A. What he wanted it to do.
B. When he would need its help.
C. What product could be advertised.
D. How the solution could be found.
31. In what way did the ad put on eggs help?
A. It greatly increased the sales of eggs.
B. It helped Bert to get a brainstorm.
C. It made sure that consumers could get fresh eggs.
D. It made the TV shows known to people repeatedly.
D
The expression “a thirst for knowledge" may soon have a new meaning for millions of people who have no way to get clean water. Researchers have developed a book with specially treated pages that can turn dirty water into clean and drinkable water. They say their invention could improve the lives of many in the developing world.
About 700 million people around the world are at risk of disease or even death because their drinking water is not clean. The water is polluted by harmful bacteria.
The book contains 25 pages. Each page is about one millimeter thick. The pages contain very small particles (微粒) of silver. The pages can be used as filters (过滤器)to remove harmful microorganisms(微生物) that can pollute drinking water. The filter kills the organisms that pass through it.
Pictures on the pages show the dangers of dirty water and how to use the book for those unable to read. The pages are made of filter paper. They are designed to be torn from the book. Water can be poured through the paper to be cleaned.
Ms. Dankovich, the inventor, says each page can treat up to 100 liters of water. She recently presented her invention at the meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston, Massachusetts. She was asked whether she had considered adding classic literature on the book's pages.
"The idea of classic texts - that's of interest maybe later. We have discussed a little bit more exciting text. But we really haven't had the time to go through that part," she says.
Teri Dankovich and another researcher tested the drinkable book in Bangladesh, Ghana and South Africa. The tests proved to be successful.
Water for Life, a non-governmental organization, has provided financial support for the project.
32. What do we learn about the book from the text?
A. It sells well around the world.
B. It has pages with several functions.
C. It is about environment protection.
D. It can treat about 100 liters of water.
33. What does the underlined phrase "that part" in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A. Classic texts.
B. Invention presentation.
C. Exciting discussion.
D. Financial support.
34. In which country did not the researchers test the drinkable book?
A. Bangladesh.
B. Ghana.
C. South Africa.
D. America.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Researchers have found a way to save those being ill.
B. Millions of people are in great need of drinkable water.
C. Book pages could provide safe drinking water.
D. Knowledge is as important as drinkable water.

It’s been a difficult year. My daughter, my dog and I lost our home. We’ve depended upon the kindness of others to provide temporary shelter.
36 At one point, I felt as though my daughter might be better off without me. If she were placed with a rich family, she would have a good life. I was unable to provide a good life for her. However, she never complains, although she has every right to. She went from having a beautifully decorated bedroom of her own, to having temporary shelter. 37
I dug through the change at the bottom of my purse and bought her a lollipop at the store today. She’d had her eye on it the entire time we were in line to pay for our purchase. It was an old-fashioned one that cost $1.00. 38 It was the end of the month and I only had $1.35 left to my name. However, she’d been such a good girl, and I really thought she deserved a special treat.
I reached into my purse and counted out enough for the lollipop. You would have thought I gave her the key to the magic kingdom! “Thank you, Mommy! You’re the best mommy!”39 All at once, the cloud of despair that had hung over me lifted. 40 I was ready to continue my journey, willing to face whatever challenges may lie ahead.
A.I really couldn’t afford it.

C.I could see tears shining in her eyes.
