The setting
This section provides the reader with the setting and a brief introduction to the characters.
Describe the setting of this short story.

In pairs, answer the following questions orally.

Trying doors as he went, twirling his club with many intricate and artful movements, turning now and then to cast his watchful eye down the peaceful thoroughfare, the officer, with his stalwart form and slight swagger, made a fine picture of a guardian of the peace.

Graham had barely finished his coffee when Henry returned. Nowadays the village has barely 100 inhabitants.

Scarcely: 往往强调不足,常同“enough, sufficient, any” 等 表示程度的词连用,意为“不太, 简直没有”。

“beat” here means the usual path followed by someone on duty, esp. a policeman. …my beat was education… (Unit 9) “beat” in this case is also called news beat or run. It refers to the particular news source or activity that a reporter is responsible for covering.

In a street in New York, a little before ten o’clock at night, a cold night with gusts and maybe light rain, one of the characters is introduced vividly to the reader--- a stalwart, dutiful policeman on the beat.

Write down the main ideas for each part.
