On the first day of high school, I told that the freshmen would need to take a part in the military training. I felt worrying sick because the sun was too hot in summer day and I would be sunburnt. So there was no way for the freshmen to refuse to participate. The toughly training lasted a week. In the beginning, we stood in the hot sun and moved around the playground. 13. Hardware in general, and smartphones in particular, have become a huge environmental and health problem in the Global South's landfill sites
(垃圾填埋场).
Electronic waste ( e-waste ) currently takes up 5 percent of all global waste, and it is set to increase rapidly as more of us own more than one smartphone, laptop and power bank. They end up in places like Agbogbloshie on the outskirts of Ghana's capital, Accra. It is the biggest e-waste dump in the world, where 10, 000 informal workers walk through tons of abandoned goods as part of an informal recycling process. They risk their health searching for the precious metals that are found in abandoned smartphones.
But Agbogbloshie should not exist. The Basel Convention, a 1989 treaty, aims to prevent developed nations from unauthorized dumping of e-waste in less developed countries. The e-waste industry, however, circumvents the regulations by exporting e-waste labelled as "secondhand goods" to poor countries like Ghana, knowing full well that it is heading for a landfill site.
A recent report found Agbogbloshie contained some of the most dangerous chemicals. This is not surprising: smartphones contain chemicals like mercury (水银),lead and even arsenic (砷). Reportedly, one egg from a free-range chicken in Agbogbloshie contained a certain chemical which can cause cancer and damage the immune system at a level that's about 220 times greater than a limit set by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA ) . Most worryingly, these poisonous chemicals are free to pollute the broader soil and water system. This should concern us all, since some of Ghana's top exports are cocoa and nuts.
Some governments have started to take responsibility for their consumers' waste. For example, Germany has started a project that includes a sustainable (可持续的)recycling system at Agbogbloshie, along with a health clinic for workers. However, governments cannot solve the problem alone, as there is an almost limitless consumer demand for hardware, especially when governments green policies are focused on issues like climate change.
Only the manufacturers can fix this. A more economically sustainable and politically possible solution is through encouraging hardware manufacturers to make the repair, reuse and recycling of hardware profitable, or at least cost-neutral.
1. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A.Electronic products need improving urgently.
B.Electronic waste is too complex to get fully recycled.
C.Electronic waste requires more landfill sites across Ghana.
D.Electronic pollution is a burning question in Agbogbloshie.
2. What does the underlined word "circumvents" in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Tightens.B.Abolishes.
C.Gets around.D.Brings in.
3. What should be the biggest concern according to the text
A.The violation of EFSA's standards.
B.The lack of diversity in Ghana's exports.
C.The damage to chicken's immune system.
D.The threat of polluted food around the world.
4. What does the author think is the best solution to the e-waste problem?
A.Manufacturers' developing a sustainable hardware economy.
B.Governments' adjusting their green policies about e-waste.
C.Reducing customers 'demands for electronic products.
D.Letting governments take on the main responsibility.

文章讲述了Goodmayes Hospital医院的项目经理Nikki Tysoe为医院引入自行车项目,帮助护理人员的缓解工作压力。
14. Two years ago, Nikki Tysoe rarely got on a bike. Today, though, she’s become so addicted to the cycling world that she’s even helping to bring pedal power to mental-health nurses at the hospital where she works.
In April, the National Lottery-funded charity Access Sport introduced a program that provides bikes to Tower Hamlets’ Royal London Hospital. Nikki pushed for this to be extended to Goodmayes Hospital, a mental-health facility in northeast London where she’s a project manager. She says having the bikes not only enables nursing staff to travel safely to and from work during the coronavirus crisis, but also lets them blow off steam during their breaks.
Nikki wanted to do something to make life a bit better for the staff. There’s a lot of focus on the hospitals at the moment which are having an awful time but this is also an extra-stressful time for mental health staff. The bikes provide a complement to a “wobble room” within the hospital. It’s somewhere the staff can go when they’re really stressed, and the bikes are an extension of that.
Junior doctor Aiman is very grateful for the program. “Using the bike means I can get to work safely,” she says. “This has taken out a lot of worries from my daily life and allows me to focus on my patients. It’s definitely improved my mental wellbeing.” Stress levels are generally high in nursing and having bikes would make a big difference.
While Access Sport has provided Nikki with bikes, her dream is to have three or four bicycles permanently on site. Following the success of the bike loans, Nikki is working to extend the project beyond lockdown.
1. Why did Nikki want to extend the program to Goodmayes Hospital?
A.To make her hobby known.
B.To get nurses to cycle for health.
C.To fight against the coronavirus crisis.
D.To guarantee traffic safety.
2. What might a nurse feeling stressed do in a “wobble room”?
A.Attend to patients.
B.Reflect on the work.
C.Listen to music and relax.
D.Receive professional training.
3. What can we infer about the program according to doctor Aiman?
A.It meets challenges.
B.It is a great success.
C.It boosts sales of bikes.
D.It is popular among patients.
4. Which of the following best describes Nikki?
A.Caring.B.Demanding.C.Ambitious.D.Generous.

文章主要讲述计算机科学家认为提出正确的课程并不容易,所以计算机科学家通过研究,让机器自己设计合理、正确的课程。
15. Unlike human students, computers don't seem to get bored or frustrated when a lesson is too easy or too hard. But just like humans, they do better when a lesson plan is just right for their level of skill. Coming up with the right curriculum isn't easy, though, so computer scientists wondered what if they could make machines design their own?
That's what researchers have done in several new studies to create artificial intelligence (AI) that can figure out how best to teach itself. The work could speed learning in self-driving cars and household robots, and it might even help handle previously unsolvable math problems. In one of the new experiments, an Al program tries to quickly reach a destination by navigating a 2D grid (网格) populated with solid blocks. The"agent" improves its abilities through a process called reinforcement learning, a kind of trial and error.
To help it navigate increasingly complex worlds, the researchers considered two ways in which it could draw the maps. One method randomly distributed blocks; with it, the Al didn't learn much. Another method remembered what the AI had struggled with in the past, and maximized difficulty accordingly. But that made the worlds too hard and sometimes even impossible to complete.
So the scientists created a setting, using a new approach they called PAIRED. First, they coupled their Al with a nearly identical one, which they called the antagonist (敌手). Then, they had a third AI design the world that was easy for the antagonist-but hard for the original protagonist (主角). That kept the tasks just at the edge of the protagonist's ability to solve. The designer used a neural network to learn its task over many trials. After training, the protagonist solved the problems offered to it successfully. The PAIRED approach is a clever way to get Al to learn, says Bart Selman, a computer scientist at Cornell University and president of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence.
1. Which of the following is a problem for computer scientists?
A.Designing a suitable lesson plan for computers.
B.Asking human students to be active in a lesson.
C.Helping students to work out their owe curriculum.
D.Improving human students' computer skills quickly.
2. What did the two ways used by the researchers have in common?
A.They were practical for the Al research.B.They both had their own weakness.
C.They were too hard for the AI to teach itself.D.They both made the AI struggle with the past.
3. What does Bart Selman think of the PAIRED approach?
A.Difficult B.Simple.C.Promising D.Useless
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.The Application of Artificial Intelligence B.The Impact of Artificial Intelligence
C.Artificial Intelligence Researches Navigation for Self-driving D.Artificial Intelligence Designs Lesson Plans for Itself
16. Y our next Saturday night takeaway could be brought to you by a robot after a major food delivery company announced plans to use automated vehicles to transport meals. Europe’s biggest online takeaway food company Just Eat has partnered with Starship Technologies to deliver food with robots on the streets of London later this month. “Nobody has ever done deliveries with land-based robots,” said Allan Martinson, the chief operating officer of Starship.
The robot courier can travel up to 4 miles per hour for about 10 miles. It uses a GPS signal and nine cameras to navigate (确定方向). Instead of a person arriving at their door, customers could find themselves receiving a notification on their phone that says a robot is on its way and a code to unlock the automated courier. “Put the code in, the robot opens up, and there’s your food,” said David Buttress, chief manager of Just Eat.
The robot, which has so far been tested in Greenwich, Milton Keynes and Glastonbury, costs £ 1 to transport within 3 miles, compared with the £3 to £6 it costs for a human courier. To date 30 robots have driven nearly 5,000 miles without getting into an accident or finding themselves picked on by passers-by. They have driven in more than 40 cities around the world, including London and Tallinn, Estonia.
An initial worry was how the public would react to robots. But Martinson said the public has been calm when passing the delivery machine on the streets. “The most surprising reaction has been the lack of reaction,” said Martinson.
Another significant fear was that people would disrupt (扰乱) the robots, or try to steal them and their contents. To prevent this, the robot is fitted with nine cameras, two way audio, and movement sensors that send a warning if it is lifted off the ground. And it opens only with a passcode provided to the customer via a notification. “It’s much easier to shoplift than it is to steal a robot,” said Martinson.
1. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “courier” in Paragraph 2?
A.deliverer B.collector
C.provider D.guide
2. According to the text, the Starship robot ________.
A.opens up upon hearing the code
B.travels 10 miles per hour at most
C.finds its way by means of GPS and cameras
D.sends a message to the customer upon arrival
3. The test of Starship robots shows that ________.
A.they are easy to operate
B.the robot delivery is appreciated in big cities
C.the robot delivery is cheaper than human delivery
D.they can travel for 10 hours continuously
4. Which of the following is one of the worries about Starship robots?
A.Safety of the robot delivery.
B.Accuracy of the robot delivery
C.Peoples indifference to the robots.
D.People’s concern about public traffic.
5. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Great Improvement of Just Eat
B.Global Trend of Food Companies
C.New Robots to Move on the road
D.Delivery Robots to Replace Takeaway Drivers
七、阅读理解
17. Imagine that you are in a remote village somewhere with no medical clinic. 1 Once the doctors get to you, they examine you and take
blood samples, but they won't be able to help you until they take the samples back to the hospital to find out what is wrong. 2 Thanks to engineer Andy Ozcan, many people may never be in this situation. He has invented an app that turns your mobile phone into a diagnostic(诊断的)tool.
Ozcan's invention is important because it is very accurate and easy to use. In many remote places, even if doctors have microscopes and other instruments to help them make diagnoses, there may still be other problems. Many doctors, for example, don’t have enough training to correctly interpret what they see. 3 With Ozcan's mobile phone app, health workers can take a special photo of a blood sample and send it to a central computer at a hospital. The computer will then automatically interpret the photo and send a diagnosis back in a few minutes.
4 His technology only requires a mobile phone and an Internet connection. As more than four billion people already have cell phones, the cost
of establishing the diagnostic system is fairly low.
By inventing a medical tool that uses existing technology---mobile phones---Ozcan has developed a medical tool that is both practical and economical. Therefore, it can be effectively almost anywhere. 5
A.Another reason that Ozcan's invention is important is that it is inexpensive.
B.Even though you may only have a simple infection (感染), you might die because of the delay.
C.People are trying to reduce the cost of this new medical tool.
D.Ozcan's simple, cost-effective tool might just save millions of lives around the world.
E.This tool has become much more popular all around the world.
F.You become very sick and must wait days until a mobile medical unit arrives to help.
G.As a result, they may diagnose illnesses incorrectly.
