A gentl e breeze blew through Jennifer’s hair. The golden red sun was setting.
She was on the beach, looking up at the fiery〔火红的〕ball. She was amazed by its color, deep red in the middle, softly fading into yellow. She could hear nothing but the waves and the seagulls flying up above in the sky.
The atmosphere relaxed her. After all she had been through, this was what she needed. “It’s getting late,〞she thought, “I must go home. My parents will be wondering where I am.〞
She wondered how her parents would react, when she got home after the three days she was missing. She kept on walking, directing herself where she spent every summer holiday. The road was deserted. She walked slowly and silently. Just in a few hundred meters she would have been safe in her house.
It was really getting dark now. The sun had set a few minutes before and it was getting cold too. She wished she had her favorite sweater on: it kept her really warm. She imagined having it with her. This thought disappeared when she finally saw her front door. It seemed different. Nobody had taken care of the outside garden for a few days. She was shocked: her father was usually so strict about keeping everything clean and tidy, and now... It all seemed deserted. She couldn’t understand what was going on.
She entered the house. First, she went into the kitchen where she saw a note written by her father. It said: “Dear Ellen, there is some coffee ready. I went looking.〞 Ellen was her mother but —where was she? On the right side of the hallway was her parents’room. She went in. Then she saw her. Her mother, lying on the bed, was sleeping. Her face looked so tired, as if she hadn’t slept for days. She was really pale. Jennifer would have wanted to wake her up but she looked too tired. So Jennifer just fell asleep beside her. When Jennifer woke up, something was different... she wasn’t in her mother’s room and she wasn’t wearing the old clothes she ran away in. She was in her cozy bed in her pajamas〔睡衣〕.
It felt so good being back home. Suddenly she heard a voice, “Are you feeling
better now, dear? You know you got us very, very scared.〞
56. Three days later Jennifer came back home ______.

58. Her father didn’t take care of the garden because ______.
A. he was busy looking for her
B. he had to look after his wife

D. he no longer enjoyed working in the garden
59. What can we infer from this passage?
A. In fact Jennifer’s mother had been sick for days.
B. As Jennifer walked towards home, she became increasingly scared.
C. When she found the garden deserted, she realized she was wrong.

If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “f oolish〞 the Finnish people are.
Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high-class Benz with a fare of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to, and then
walk off without paying your fare. The driver would not show the least sign of anxiety.
The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith is to wave their registration card to the waiter. With such a loose check, you can easily use any old registration〔登记〕card to take a couple of friends to dine free of charge.
The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the rate. From then on they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly.
With so many loopholes〔漏洞〕in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven to those who love to take “petty advantages〞. But the strange thing is, all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fare after they have attended to their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest account of the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good faith in everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real “g entleman〞.
60. The underlined words in this passage means to “______〞.
A. be ready to help others
B. make good use of one’s friends
C. be a little ahead of others
D. gain something at other’s expense
61. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. While taking a taxi in Finland, you can get off without first paying your fare.
B. In a big hotel in Finland, you can enjoy free meals if you’re living in the hotel.
C. The bosses in Finland pay the employees according to registration of their working hours.
D. The workers are always honest with their working hours.
62. We can learn from the passage that ______.
A. the Finnish society is of very high moral〔道德〕level
B. there are many loopholes in everyday life in Finland
C. in Finland, most taxi drivers will not charge you anything
D. everyone in Finland is like a gentleman, for they have faith in themselves
63. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A. Life in Finland
B. A Society with “Foolish〞 People
C. What a Life
D. Honest accounts of the Finns

For the most part, schools are designed to produce people who fit into society, not people who set out to change it. However, schools, particularly universities, may not only spread culture; they may add to the cultural heritage〔遗产〕. Today American society places a good deal of emphasis on the development of new knowledge, especially in the physical and biological sciences, medicine, and engineering. In recent years, the nation’s leading universities have increasin gly become research centres.
An emphasis on research has led universities to judge professors not by abilities as teachers, but as researchers. Promotions, salary increases, and other benefits have long been dependent on research and publication〔出版物〕. However, the most important is no longer publishing. To be successful these days, professors have to bring in money provided by government and private industry. Critics claim that academic success is most likely to come to those who have learned to “ignore〞 their teaching duties to pursue research activities. Defenders say that even when students themselves are not involved in research projects they benefit from such an emphasis
on research.
Major research universities like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have also cooperated with industrial companies to develop technology and products with commercial potential. With university-industry ties continuing to grow, debate has increased about the consequences for basic science, academic openness, the control of information, the direction of research, and the influence on students.
64. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT emphasized by today’s American society?
A. Physical science.
B. Biological sciences.
C. Engineering.
D. Computer science.
65. In the present standard, a successful professor is one who can ______.
A. teach well
B. get financial support for research
C. get the highest salary
D. have many publications
66. Supporters of the present emphasis on research argue that ______.
A. it involves more students in it
B. it does good to students anyway
C. it has a direct good effect on teaching
D. it earns a lot of money for a university
67. The author seems to be _______ the move of emphasis to research.
A. totally against
B. sorry to see

Madame de Stael says that only the people who can play with children are able to educate them. For success in training children, the first condition is to become a child oneself. It means to treat the child as really one’s equal, that is, to show him the same consideration, the same kind of confidence one shows to an adult. It means not to affect the child to be what we ourselves want him to become, but to be affected by the impression of what the child himself is; not to treat the child with cheating, or by force, but with the seriousness and true love suitable to his
own character.
Not leaving the child in peace is the greatest problem of present methods of training children. Parents do not see that during the whole life, the need of peace is never greater than in the years of childhood, an inner peace under all outside liveliness.
But what does a child experience? Corrections, orders, interference〔干预〕, the whole livelong day. The child is always required to leave something alone, or to do something different, to find something different, or want something different from what he does, or finds, or wants. He is always guided in another direction from the true inner will that is leading him. All of this is caused by our so-called enthusiasm in directing, advising, and helping the child to become the same model produced in one assembly line〔流水线〕. Understanding, the deepest characteristic of love, is almost always absent.
To bring up a child means carrying one’s soul in one’s hand; it means never placing ourselves in danger of meeting the cold look on the face of the child. It means the truth that the ways of injuring the child are limitless while the ways of being useful to him are few. How seldom does the educator remember that the child, even at four or five years of age, has already had a sharp feeling! The smallest mistrust and unkindness, the least act of injustice, leave wounds that last for life in the heart of the child. While, on the other hand, unexpected friendliness and kindness make quite as deep an impression on those soft senses.
72. The passage mainly talks about _______.
A. misleading zones and right ways in educating children
B. current problems in training children
C. what should be taught to children
D. the importance of educating children
73. Children, according to the passage, are experiencing _______.
A. corrections, orders and peace
B. orders, interference and peace
C. interference, orders and corrections
D. peace, guide and praise
74. If you were a parent, which of the following methods is TRUE according to the text?
A. You could treat your children not so seriously for they don’t understand many things.
B. You could train your children as you wish them to be since you are parents.
C. You should sometimes leave your children in peace as they wish in their childhood.
D. You should correct your children immediately if their behavior is not what you want.
75. We may conclude that the author believes people should _______.
A. play with the children with enthusiasm all day long just to please them
B. try to give an order, advice and suggestions to their children at any time
C. treat their children just as the way they treat an adult in their daily life
D. regard their children as an equal to them and have understanding of the inner peace of them

第四局部:写作〔共两节,总分为35分〕
第一节任务型读写〔每空1分,总分为10分〕
认真阅读如下短文,根据所读内容在文章后的表格中填入恰当的单词。
注意:表格中的每个空格只填1个词。
If you are lost in the mountains, stay calm in the face of darkness, loneliness, and the unknown.. It will greatly increase your chances of survival. Many people
think that preparing necessary equipment and knowing how to use it are very important, but actually eighty percent of mountain survival is your reaction to fear.
FIND A HIDING PLACE
Unnecessary labor will make you sweat and make you cold. Find a hiding place around you before trying to start your own construction. If you are in a snow –covered area, you may be able to dig a cave in deep snow for protection from the wind. You should try to hide yourself in the middle of the mountain if possible. Stay out of the valleys ---cold air falls , and the valley floor can be the coldest area on the mountain.
SIGNAL RESCUERS FOR HELP
The best time to signal rescuers is during the day. Signal for help from the highest point possible---it will be easier for rescuers to see you, and any sound you make will travel farther. If you take a box of matches and a space blanket 〔a special blanket for travelling〕, build three smoky fires and put your blanket----- gold side facing out –--- on the ground.
DO NOT WALK AWAY
It will make finding you more difficult if you have gone off in a different direction, as search teams will be trying to follow your path. Searchers often end up finding a car with no one in it.
If you get frostbite, do not rewarm the affected area until you ’re out of danger. You can walk on frostbitten feet , but once you warm the area and can feel the pain, you will not want to walk anywhere. Try to protect the frostbitten area and keep it dry until you are rescued.

How to overcome the pressure of exams
As we all know, most of us middle school students feel somehow nervous whenever we’re taking an important exam. There is no doubt that exams are important to us students, but it’s more important to have a right attitude towards them. As a matter of fact, exams are no more than a means of evaluating; therefore, there is no need
to worry too much about the results. Only studying hard very day and making good preparations for exams can we avoid suffering from the pressure of exams.
We’d better go out for a walk or do some outdoor exercise before exams. Besides, having enough sleep can make us full of energy and make it possible for us to perform well in the exam, A hot bath or a cup of hot milk before going to bed night help you have a sound sleep.
So, my suggestion is: don’t worry about exams, try to relax yourself.

M: Next month.
W: I can’t wait that long.
M: Excuse me?
W: I can’t wait a month. I need something sooner.
M: I’m sorry.
9. M: Hi, Lily, how’s your new flat?
W: It’s great. I really like it.
M: How big is it?
W: It’s one big room, but it has a bathroom and a small kitchen, too.
M: How far is it from the office?
W: It’s only about 10 minutes.
M: 10 minutes by bus or by car?
W: On foot. I walked to work this morning. I was 10 minutes early.
M: You are lucky. I was 10 minutes late.
W: What happened?
M: All the buses came late.
W: What did Susan say?
M: She was late too.
W: What happened to her?
M: She took the train, and it was late too.
W: Well, then, you’re really lucky after all. But what are you going to do tomorrow.
M: I’ll start out 15 minutes earlier.
10. M: Good afternoon, everybody and welcome to this class on English words.
I hope that all of you can hear me. If not, please let me know. I am Pref. John Morris. I’ll be your teacher for the next 13 weeks. As you can probably tell, this is one of popular and crowded classes. Indeed, every time these courses are offered, this room i s very full. Why is that? Well, in order to use the English language, it’s very important to have at least a basic understanding of how words are formed. Just to mention one figure, and there are many. There are about one million words in English. If you are an English learner, you might wonder how you can possibly remember all of these words. Well, for one thing you don’t have to. No native speaker exists who knows all of the words in the English language. Besides, there are shortcuts. Shortcuts? Yes, for example, if you know how words are formed by using parts of words。
