There are great differences in the concepts of education , aim of education , methods of education and contents of education between American family education and Chinese family education . This thesis will complete the comparative study from the differences , the reasons and the results of family education between America and China . The author hopes to find a satisfied family education method through comparing the differences between American family education and Chinese family education . At the same time , the author hopes this thesis can provide some helpful suggestions for family education in order to make children grow more healthily and roundly .Keywords: family education childeren differences education for all-around development Main Body:Ⅰ.The differences of family education between America and China:1.The concepts of family education are different .The different education concepts between America and China lead children to receive differert education . In China , many parents only care about whether the children have a promising future , a good job , a good life or not . Based on these expectations , the majority of parents feel that their responsibility for their children is to create as good conditions as possible they can so that the children will not worry about anything in the future2. Chinese parents would like to provide everything what they can for their children in the process of children’s growth . In short , they would like to sacrifice anything if their children can live better with their help . Therefore, in the process of children’s growth, the most important thing the parents concerning is to develop their children’s intellect , except for caring chi ldren’s daily life . In order to make their children have a good performance in study , become outstanding , or even become a famous person in the future ,they would not let children do anything except studying . Contrastively , American parents generally believe that the growth of childeren must rely on their own strength and experiences. Based on this concept , most American parents emphasize more to train their children’s ability of independence once they are born because they think that children should form a self-supporting will and the capacity to live independently since their childhood . And the capacity comes from the training in the early age3.In the film 《Gua Sha Treatment》4, there is a scene that Datong orderded his son to apologize to his boss’s son when his saw his son was fighting with his boss’s son . What’s more , he slapped his son in the face when his son refused to apologize , which gave his boss aquite a shock . His boss became confused why the father would show the regret by striking his son . This scene and the boss’s confusion reflect the different concepts between the two countries . Traditonal Chinese family education emphasize kindheartedness and bedience5, so we can say that Chinese parents like Datong in the film always want to model their children . On the contrary , America children have more rights of autonomy because their parents emphasis on justice and freedom in the process of family education .2.The aim of family education are different6.The aim of family education is to foster the childeren to grow in some direction by family education . It is the restrictive factor for the direction of family education , deciding the general effect of it . So the aim of family education is the core of family education and the fundamental reason for the differences between the two countries on family education .There is an essential difference between two countrys’aim of family education , with to expect the child to become an outstanding personage and to hope the child to be an comprehensive and independent person giving expressions to the difference . To most Chinese parents , the aim is expecting their child to be a “dragon ”, which is “wang zi cheng long ”in Chinese . But American parents take hoping the child to be a man of ability which is “ wang zi cheng ren ” in Chinese as their aim . For Chinese parents, their aim is to do anyting to support their children to get high marks . What forms apparent contrast to it is , America parents give their children more training about improving abilities . They try to train their children to have the ability of adapting to environmental variety and the ability of living independently .3.The methods are different between America and China .The differences of concepts and aim cause the childen to be taught by different ways and methods . In Chinese family , affected by Chinese traditional culture , parents educate children by “ control ” and “ seal ” type . There are three tips for it 7:(1)Chinese parents prepare all things for their children in daily life . In Chinese family ,children don’t have to do any housework .(2)Chinese parents protect the children to excess in social activities . Many children areprevented from exposure to the outer world because their parents worry about children’s being affected by bad things 8.(3)Chinese parents have a rather strict attitude toward children’s study . Parents regard thegrades as the only standard for future success . “ Tasks Sea ” strategy is often used in study .Chinese children are tired of doing many extra exercises .So Chinese children spend more time in studying than doing other things . What about America children ? Let’s talk about the famous film 《The Pacifier》9. In the film , it may be unconcious , but Shane Wolfe had let the kids master many skills by training them during the time when he cared them . So American parents bring up their children by the method of “ letting go ”but “ not indulging ” to exercise children’s abilities of independent living .4. The different contents of family education between America and China .The differences of family education between the two countries are also reflected in the contents of family education . Although the contents of Chinese family education can also devided into moral education , intellectual education , physical education and artistic education , but intellectual education has been the most important one since they go to school . However , the contents of American family education is abundant , which pay more attention to the harmonious development of language , emotion , knowledge and so on . With the influence of multi culture and sense ofworth , it is easy to accept new thoughts and culture . So America children are better at taking risks and innovating .2. Different economic formChina has a long histroy with a large population .Therefore , there are so few opportunities to find a job even a good job which can decide one’s life happiness . And getting high marks has become a necessary condition to have a good job and future . The condition of econemy in America is better than that in China , so there are more employment opportunities in America . American parents think profession is not distinguished whether it is noble or nidering as long as they can survive in society .3.Different social conditionsSo far , social security system and old-age care have not been perfect in China . Many Chinese parents take their children as their private possession in order to receive the children’s return , which is reflected in the methods of education . For this reason , their children’s high scores have become their origin of pride . But in America , there is a prosper development of econemy and sane social security system , so American parents don’t count on their children’s support . They see educating child to be an independent , conscientious and kindhearted person as their duties .4.Different traditional culture12In China , people advocate collectivism which emphasize the collective interests more important than personal interests . Therefore , Chinese parents usually replace children’s interests by their own wills and thoughts . They design children’s future standing in the adult angle . What’s more , in Chinese family , parents can raise their children in the lifetime . However , stressing personality , upholding individual development and caring about personal benefit are all the cores of American culture . Rationalistic American parents insist that children after 18 years old should be independent and not rely on their parents .Ⅲ.The results of two different kinds of family education13: The results of family education in the two countries also display obvious differences because of the differences of education concepts , aim , methods and contents . These are mainly reflected in five aspects .1.Ability of adapting to the societyMost Ameican children can adapt to the society more smoothly than many Chinese children . They can face and overcome setbacks more easily .2.Ability of living independentlyCompared with independent American children , Chinese children have particularly much requirements and strong dependence ,and they always want to get others’ care .3.Interpersonal relationshipsAs a result of parents’overprotection , Chinese children have few ablities of personal interaction . American children are opposite at this point .4.Responsibility of supporting the oldGenerally speaking , Many American children lack the sense of responsibility to support their parents in comparison with Chinese children .5.The relationship among family membersAs a whole , the relationship among Chinese family members is more harmony than that among American family . The relationship of Chinese family is very close , but in America ,family members look like separate individuals .Ⅳ. Discussions and Suggestions14:In this thesis , it is only a generic comparative study on family education in America and China . Of course , there is also distinctiveness on it . In addition , compared with Chinese family education , American family education also has its obvious shortage . So the aim of this thesis is not totally to repudiate Chinese family education or wholly to accept American family education . In the end ,by the comparative study on family education in America and China , the writer wants to cause reform ideas of Chinese family education in order to improve Chinese education level .According to our country’s special circumstances, the number of one-child family is becoming larger , so family education must be improved in the project of educational reform and development and family education must be combined with school education and social education. Therefore, it is necessary to change traditional family education ideas .(1) Chinese parents should educate their children in social environment , in other words , theyshould not only teach their children the knowledge of survival , but also the responsibilities for the society .(2) Chinese parents must cultivate their children’s consciousness of independence,self-support , cooperation and the spirit of caring for others .(3) In China , education for all-around development should be vigorously advocated andimplemented effectively .(4) Much can be learned from each other on the ways of family education for America andChina .In a word , family education is very important . 美国虽然历史不长,但是美国文化已经成为世界的主流文化之一。

今天我们将从教育、宗教、饮食等方面来对比中美文化之间的异同,提高我们跨文化交际的能力。

China is a country that has a long history,in the long period cultural accumulation,the traditional culture with Chinese characteristics came into being。

Although the United S tates don’t have such a long history,American culture has become one of the mainstream culture in the world。

Today we’ll Compare the similarities and differences between Chinese and American cultures from three aspects:religion,education and food。

In this way,we can improve our ability of cross-culture communication。

If we desire to learn about U.S or communicate with Americans in proper way ,it is necessary for us to know about cross-cultural communication. Cross-cultural communication (also referred to as intercultural communication) is a field of study that focus on how people from different cultural backgrounds communicate, in similar and different ways among themselves, and how they endeavor to communicate across cultures. Only if we are familiar with the similarities and differences can we avoid cultural conflicts and get along well with foreign friends. When you are conc erned about what you can do and what you can’t, your foreign friends will show respect for your national culture and there is no doubt that you can enhance the level of cross-culture communication .In the essay,I’ll talk about similarities and differences in three aspects between Chinese and American culture :religion ,food and festival.1.religionAmerica is remarkable now, as in the past,for its attachment to the principle of freedom of belief or disbelief . –The First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States indicates that "Congress shall make no law establishing religion, orprohibit the free exercise thereof."So you can choose your indivisual relision.According to the research, The largest religion in the US is Christianity, practiced by the majority of the population (76% in 2008);Speaking in general terms, the contemporary American is a Christian country. A research indicates that most Americans believe the existence of Santa Clous, Christ Jesus and angel even after they have received edu cation and become adults. It’s easy to see the ingrained status of Christianity in the United States of America. Christianity has the idea that people have original sin, because human ancestors, Adam and eva had sinned, corrupt moral invaded their body, and transmitted to their descendants, the result is that all mankind have sin. Obviously, Christianity preached that man and God, the separation of man and nature. China is a multi-religious country, and Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Catholicism and Christian are the main religions in the country. Incomplete statistics show that there are more than 100 million religious followers in China with over 85 000 religious sites, over 3000 religious groups and some 74 religious colleges. Chinese people also enjoy the freedom of religious belief according to law, and regular religious activities are protected by the Constitution. All religious believers and non-religious people in the country respect for each other in beliefs and customs and live together in harmonies. While Chinese religion would emphasize that the harmony between man and nature, issues of life within a confined themselves, to solve problems with people- oriented. It’s quite different from the Christianity.2.foodGenerally speaking, we Chinese think food is very important to man. People often associate food with important holidays and the chance to meet distinguished guests. The Chinese food not only is very delicious and tasty but also very pleasing to your senses and many of dishes have very beautiful and fancy names. The Chinese have the food culture of our own which are quite different from westerners. In the west, people pay more attention to the nutrition of food rather than the looks of it. The cuisine and table manners are quite different from ours in a great extent.It is a very common practice we Chinese people say "Have you had your meal?" when they meeteach other around the time before or after meals. In fact, it is a kind of greeting to communicate with each other. But foreigners cannot understand that because they think why you ask me this. They tend to think you want to invite me to dinner or I am not rich enough to feed myself regularly but that is my business not yours. Chinese think food is very important and essential to people so it shows some care and concern about you. Very often it puzzles foreigners a lot that we ask and talk so much when we order our food in the restaurant. One reason is we ask what the food or the dish is and try to clarify it because you sometimes never know what the food is just according the name of the food until it is put on your table in the restaurant just. While most of western food has a simple and clear name and you know what it is when you hear the name. For instance, there is a traditional food call "fish and chips" in the UK. You see it is very obvious it is fried fish and potato chips. The reason for this in China is on the one hand to try to tell you the way it cooks such as cook, fry, grill and broil in the name and on the other it has beautiful good names so that you have a good imagination and association to let you have a good appetite.Generally speaking, we don't use much tableware when we have our meal in China. Mainly we have bowl, dishes, chopsticks and spoons, which we don't use very often. In serving English meals, they use so much tableware with different kinds and sizes. The Chinese do not know how to use them properly when they are invited to dinner in English family. For example there are different kinds of names for glasses in English, such as wine glass, cherry glass, brandy glass, beer glass, snifter glass, champion flute and high bowl. You can see tableware also show the food culture of different countries.cationUs’s higher education was considered as the best education in the world. Chinese students are good at getting high marks but on mathematics, psychics and so on. However, they are lack of chances to practice skills in real world thus having no social experiences. In that case, after graduation, most students find it difficult to find a satisfactory job though many of them get a job through the relationship net. While in America, the education system pays more attention to social skills than to marks .Secondly, the attitude towards study is different between American and Chinese. IntroductionIt is well known that higher education has been more and more significant all over the world. Because of the development of science and technology, the relationship between higher education and national politics, economy, science, culture, military is becoming closer and closer day by day. This mutual relation especially shows in aspect of higher education. The higher education is vigorous and upward, and it not only simply shows the growth of quantity, but especially has had the huge change in the nature. China and America share many characteristics in higher education. However this paper has mainly discussed the differences between Chinese and American higher education. The two countries are different in four significant aspects: (1)social environment and cultural tradition (2)education system (3)graduates ’ability (4)education reform measures.II. Comparison of the social environment and cultural tradition between China and America2.1 contrast of social environment and traditional education between China and AmericaAmerica is the biggest immigrant country. American economy emphasizes on the practical value, as well as individual value realization with fast development, rich material life, strong material idea and etc. The American advocates the independent way of life and work. The American owns full creative humanities spirit, the innovation is the forever subject in their brains. They pursue the hi-tech and prefer to compete.C ontrast with young USA, China is the great nation with glorious history and cultural traditions. The Chinese people have the excellent moral of modesty, but also have been over cautious and conservative. Though Chinese economy and technology is quite backward, it has very strong potential development, and Chinese students worked hard since they were small. Therefore China implements the policy of opening up, abundantly absorbs the benefit and enriches itself.The education between Chinese and American is extremely different. American education aims at building such an education to raise the creativity with less study and more thought. USA pays great attention to train the students’ practice ability to utilize the knowledge, cultivatingthe students to ask the knowledge and authority and building the ability to extend the knowledge system. That fact that 1/3 of numbers among all Nobel Prize winners in the world are the American is a very good illustration.Compared with American higher education, China’s higher education aims at building the foundation of education with more study and less thought; Chinese education pays more attention to instill and accumulate knowledge, cultivating the students’respect to the knowledge and authority and building the ability to inherit the knowledge system.III. Contrast of higher education system between Chinese and American3.1 different establishments of curricula and specialtyA nation’s higher education is the reflection of economic system. American education aims at adapting for society demand, they explicitly stipulate three big functions: education’s service for the economic development, the scientific research and teaching. The manifest of service in the establishment of specialty curriculum is to meet the social need and set up special curriculum or specialty which the society needs.In China's universities, during quite long period of time, the establishment of specialty curriculum lacks the change and could not follow social demand. In the latest few years, the majority of Chineseuniversities all started to pay great attention to the transformation and renewal of establishment of specialty curriculum so as to meet the need of society.3.2 different choices of specialty curriculaIn order to adapt the society, the American universities have established many specialties and curriculum of choice for students; the students choose or transform specialties and schools according to own interest and hobby. The American higher education system is extremely diverse and flexible, which is solo in the world higher education.In China, the student may choose the specialty according to own interest and hobby, but change of specialty in the school is not easy, transformation of school then is more difficult. In American universities, the compulsory courses are few, and elective courses are rich. While in Chinese universities, the compulsory subjects occupy the major part, and many schools(especially for technical colleges and universities)have the phenomenon of more emphasizing on the Science subjects, little on the liberal arts.3.3 different styles of inspecting students’ resultWhen American school inspects the result of student, they emphasize more on the ability to analyze and solve the question but not the ability of memory or description. The American student need the mechanical memorizing, but displays creative thought as far aspossible .This can cultivate students’study interest, raise the ability of doing it by self and make the study be one kind of creative activity.However, many teachers still adopted old teaching ways in Chinese universities, thus takes a test which needs mechanical memorizing. Such an inspection method has seriously attacked the students’ enthusiasm of study, caused the student to one-sidedly pay great attention to the theory and neglect the ability of practice.3.4 different styles of students’ managementIn the United States, many students at the school could conveniently take the IC card with a photo; the cards can be used to enter libraries and computer rooms and other facilities such as gymnasiums and other coliseum throughout the academy. Experienced consultants equipped by the school would help students to determine their main direction (major, a bit like our domestic professional) and guide students to choose specific classes. After selecting courses, in accordance with the school timetable, the septic time, place, classroom and course is entirely controlled by individual who means that everyone has the right of their own curriculum.Unlike American students, Chinese students also need arrangements of classes and dormitories. Compared with the USA’s IC card, our domestic student card and library card is similar to it. Except these, Chinese school has no experienced consultants to help students todetermine their main direction. As for the accommodation of students, some schools have a limited number of student dormitories, each school has a restaurant and fast-food shops, but most of them are always operated by outside operators where management are independent of schools. Most of students prefer to share a flat and live outside. So their dinner and lodging almost have no relationship with the school.3.5 different methods of teaching lessonsIn the United States inspiring students is great important for teaching. In classroom teachers will specially put forward some inspiring questions for students. In such a teaching mode, the students in the classroom have a higher degree of freedom, and they can be ready to make their own doubt for teachers which made the teaching atmosphere lively and vivid. This method of teaching helps to develop students’abilities of independent thinking and solving problem, however, this approach has a high demand for teachers which easily lead to a decrease in teaching quality and depth.China's higher education pays more attention to the systematic study. When teaching the curriculum, teachers should follow in accordance with certain teaching programs. Students have certain interactive questions, but this question tends to be discussed after the class, rather than in the classroom. It is the main mode that class is taught by teachers and students just listen to the records. This approachis conducive to help the students learn systematic knowledge. The class content is quite rich, but they have less sense of innovation.3.6 differences between public and private schoolsThere are more than 1500 public school of higher learning and more than 1600 private institutions in American. Both the public and private schools have a good reputation and high quality of the university. Very few Americans judge the quality not from the perspective of public and private schools, but from their teachers, courses and history.However, many Chinese believe that private schools can be unmatched with the public schools, and they are belittling or making an exclusion of private schools in heart. In private schools, Chinese people indeed should learn from the Americans, abandon the prejudice and make a correct and fair assessment for private schools.IV. Differences of quality and ability of graduates between China and US4.1 differences of actual talents fosteredIn actual talent fostered, the ability of adapting to society from American students was stronger than the Chinese Students. There are more and more opportunities to participate in social activities. Almost all the students have the experience of working outside. At the same time, civic education, campus cultural activities and community service activities in America increase the students’ability to adapt to thecommunity. While the Chinese Students stay under the closed campus for a long period,they have little direct ties to society and poorly understand the community, therefore Chinese students have to adapt to working atmosphere later than American’s students for two to three years.V.Difference of reform measures5.1 American reform measuresCurrently, American progress in the field of technology and knowledge occupies about 80 percent. The data is higher than one of the developed countries in Europe. Institutions of higher education should make indelible contribution to such a data. To meet the challenges of the 21st century, since the mid-1990s, the United States accelerates the reform of higher education systems which aimed at improving the quality of teaching and management efficiency and make greater contribution to the development of community and economy.Unprecedented expansion of social function of American University has become the power source for social development and progress. Therefore, the United States government policy-makers set off a new round of the 21st century-oriented reform of higher education to promote the development of higher education as a national goal of the important strategic initiatives.In the 21st century, the key point of American higher education reform is to achieve universal highereducation and make all over 18-year-old American youth have access to higher education.The overall idea of American Education reform is to build a higher education system which adapt to times’ demands. The most important measure is the reform of basic education and secondary education, the aim of idea is to meet the demand of adapting to the multiple reforms in future. To implement a strategic goal of universal higher education, the United States took a number of very innovative reform measures based on a substantial increase for education. These reform measures include: (1) implement small class teaching; (2) strengthen bilingual teaching, make college graduates more competitive and more adaptable; (3) improve the quality of teachers; in the system of employing teachers, schools take measures to employ formal teacher and informal teacher. In teaching methodology, teachers must adopt the modern teaching methods with integration of traditional media and modern media together for teaching.5.2 Chinese reform measuresRegarding the quality education as the most important thing, China's higher education implements the strategy of sustainable development, broaden the area of knowledge base, promote the integration of cross-disciplinary and connection between schools and society.Such a style aims at cultivating talents with a strong sense ofpioneering spirit, self-confidence, originality and boldly challenging the authority. China has been adhering to the reform of higher education for a long time. The most notable effect from the college merger is improvement of teaching effect. The College merger resolves some problems from the current teaching system uncoordinated with the international trend of socialization and market and enables educational resources to promote the effective allocation. The second measure is to set up the college courses in a market-oriented direction and adapt to the needs of society. Now in many school curricula’s is diverse, the initiative measures are taken to meet the needs of the market, at the same time a number of professionals closely related to social life are set up. The third initiative measure is based on the target of student-oriented.Since the 20th century, China's higher education emphasized the training of personnel ability, including the ability of acquiring knowledge, ability of analysis and problem-solving, ability of creating and certain organizational ability. At the same time the concept of quality education is put forward, which emphasizes the ideological and moral qualities, cultural quality, physical and mental quality. As a main part, students are not only the educated ones, but also participants of education.VI. ConclusionAll in all ,America’s higher education is different from China’s, it mainly performs through four points (1)social environment and cultural tradition (2)education system (3)graduates ‘ability (4)education reform measures. In order to reduce these differences, we should take some appropriate measures.In order to decrease the distance between Chinese higher education and American higher education, we should understand the difference of higher education between China and American, and absorb the advantages to profit from the American higher education and the development of our higher education. First of all, China's higher education should change from the "examination-oriented education" to "quality education". What is more, Chinese higher education should establish”people-oriented”education concepts. Besides, Student's sense of participation should be fully prominent in teaching practice. Teaching should focus on taking individualized teaching methods, strategies and techniques, widely apply the science teaching methods such as "free discussion", "self-study", make teachers and students exchange their ideas free, train students to learn initiative and creativity, promote students’initiative and creativity. The Education of America and China
The national power can’t develop without talent resource; meanwhile talent fostering is based on education. So a country’s power is determined by her educational level. In other words, education is significant to a country’s development.
As two major powers, China and America’s education styles are quite different. In my opinion, the reason of the difference includes three main aspects: history, culture and college entrance examination.
China is a country with an ancient civilization, so she has a long history. Imperial examination is the product of the long history, which influences the current Chinese educational style a lot. However, American history only has several hundred years. As a result, her educational style isn’t influenced by ancient history. As for culture, there exist enormous contrasts between China and America. Relatively speaking, China is conservative but America is on-limits. Though Chinese culture is attached to profound history, American culture is freer. The last point is that Chinese college entrance examination’s competition is rather keen. Owing to this, Chinese students have to study in a fixed pattern to get good marks.
In terms of me, I prefer American education style. Because I think if one receives American education, he will have much freedom to study whatever he is interested in. Also, his creativity will be developed quickly. Moreover, American students’capabilities can evolve in an all-round way, not only in the study. On the contrary, some Chinese students only can study, and they even don’t know some basic living skills and can’t take care of themselves. In America, you can study in a relaxed and happy way. It seems that American educational style is perfect, but, in fact, it has a shortage. Some American students may have too much freedom so that they are out of control and walk in a wrong way.
Chinese education is kind of modeled, which may limit children’s intellectual exploration. In addition, students’ learning task in China is too much. They get large quantities of pressure and often have little time to relax. On account of it, students are likely to feel tired of studying and lose their learning motivation. Chinese education
style seems to be discouraged, but it can really select excellent students and foster talents in certain area.
In a word, Chinese education style and American education style both have their strengths and weaknesses. What we should do is to learn from others’strengths to make up for our weaknesses.。
