第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)One evening last summer, when I asked my 17-year-old son, Ray, for help with dinner, his response surprised me, “What’s a colander(漏勺)?” he asked.
I could only blame myself. Nobody’s hands went in the sauce except my own. But that night, as I explained with a touch of panic that a colander is the thing with holes in it, I wondered what else I hadn’t prepared Ray for. I felt confident that I’d raised a
self-reliant boy, as we all try to do. But could he boil water? Sew on a button? Wash his clothes without turning them pink? No, no and no. Suddenly it hit me: He’d be leaving the house in a year to attend college. No way was I going to set a spoiled prince into the world.
As parents, while we focus on our child’s confide nce and character, we perhaps don’t always consider that we are also raising someone’s future roommate, boyfriend, husband, or father. I wanted to know that I’d raised a boy who would never ask the woman in his life, “What’s for dinner?” So I came up with a plan: I would offer Ray a private home economics course. I was delighted to find that he didn’t say no.
For two hours, three days a week, Ray was all mine. One day, as his tomato sauce reduced on the stove, he washed and seasoned a chicken for toasting. Then he rolled out the piecrust(馅饼皮)and filled it with apples, all while listening to my explanation on the importance of preheating an oven.
Three of my four grandparents were tailors, so Ray was genetically programmed to quickly master the basics, like mending a split seam or refastening a button. One day we covered Advanced Laundry, in which I taught him never to mix a red sweatshirt with white shirts or put sweaters in the dryer. I knew that he would rather have been shooting hoops in the driveway than learning to mend socks with his mother -- he tried to beg off sewing lessons, even though I insisted that one day, someone would find the sight of him fixing his own shirt very attractive -- but it couldn’t be denied that he was
learning, and more than just housekeeping. “I appreciate more what you do as a mom,” he told me one day.
Ray now understands the finer points of cooking, and more important, he realizes there’s nothing masculine(男子气的)about being helpless. Not only can he make his own dinner, he can make it for his family, too. That’s what I call a man.
1、Hearing her son’s question, the author felt _______.
A.shocked B.angry
C.disappointed D.calm
2、We can learn from the text that Ray ________.
A.made great progress in cooking
B.preferred sewing to cooking
C.was unwilling to take the course at first
D.always thought it attractive to do housework
3、The underlined part “more than just housekeeping” shows that Ray _______. A.fell in love with housework B.did other work in the house C.acknowledges the author’s efforts D.began to be more independent
4、What would be the best title for the text?
A.Are Women Programmed for Housework? B.Should Boys Be Involved in Housework?
C.I’m Proud I’ve Raised a Curious Son D.A Present for My Future
Daughter-in-law
22.(8分)Christmas is a time for eating great food, giving and receiving presents, and most importantly spending time with your family watching some classic Christmas movies.
The Grinch (2000)
This is a Christmas must-watch and one of Jim Carrey's best performances. It was also originally a nursery tale book written by Dr Seuss. It's the story of a green monster who wants to ruin Christmas but who in the end discovers the power of love and generosity. I promise it's a great film with plenty of laughs along the way.
Love Actually (2003)
While this is not a personal favourite of mine, people in the UK absolutely love this film. It has many featuring actors and actresses. It might be a little difficult to follow as
there are complex plots, so I recommend watching a translated version or enabling subtitles (字幕) in your native language. However, the heart-warming elements of the film make it worth watching.
Home Alone (1990)
This amusing masterwork is one of my favourite films of all time. It tells the story of a boy, Kevin, who is left alone in his house when his large family forgets to take him on vacation with them. While the families are away, burglars try to rob the house and Kevin must protect his home by setting traps. The trips, falls and traps will have you laughing out loud as you watch a 10-year-old boy beat two grown men.
Miracle on 34th Street (192)
You can't have Christmas in an English-speaking country without watching this movie. It's not funny like Home Alone or The Grinch, but it is incredibly touching. It's about a man who claims to be Santa, but nobody believes him except a lawyer and a little girl. The story-line may seem a little childish but you can enjoy it at any age.
1、Which film is adapted from a fairy tale?
A.The Grinch.
B.Home Alone.
C.Love Actually.
D.Miracle on 34th Street.
2、What is Home Alone mainly about?
A.An unsuccessful family vacation.
B.A boy protecting home by himself.
C.A terrible suffering to a little boy.
D.A 10-year-old boy's practical jokes.
3、Why is Miracle on 34th Street so popular?
A.Owing to its moving plots.
B.Because of its funny story.
C.Due to its childish storyline.
D.For its famous actors and actresses.
23.(8分)Food picked up just a few seconds after being dropped is less likely to contain bacteria than if it is left for longer periods of time, according to the findings of research carried out at Aston University's School of Life and Health Sciences. The
findings suggest there may be some scientific basis of the "5-second rule"—the belief about it being fine to eat food that has only had contact with the floor for five seconds or less.Although people have long followed the "5-second rule",until now it was unclear whether it actually helped.
The study, undertaken by final year Biology students and led by Anthony
Hilton,Professor of Microbiology at Aston University, monitored the transfer of the common bacteria from a variety of indoor floor types as carpet, cement floor to
toast, pasta, biscuit and a sticky sweet when contact was made from 3 to 30 seconds. The results showed that: time is a significant factor in the transfer of bacteria from a floor surface to a piece of food, and the type of flooring the food has been dropped on has an effect, with bacteria least likely to transfer from carpeted surfaces and most likely to transfer from cement flooring surfaces to moist foods making contact for more than 5 seconds. Professor Hilton said,"Consuming food dropped on the floor still carries an infection risk as it very much depends on which bacteria are present on the floor at the time."
The Aston team also carried out a survey of the number of people who employ the “five-second rule”.The survey showed that: 87% of the people surveyed said they would eat food dropped on the floor,or already have done so.55% of those that would,or have eaten food dropped on the floor are women.81% of the women who would eat food from the floor would follow the "5-second rule".Professor Hilton added,"Our study showed that a surprisingly large majority of people are happy to consume dropped food, with women the most likely to do so.But they are also more likely to follow the "5-second rule",which our research has shown to be more than an old wives’ tale."
1、Which kind of food is not used in the study?
A.Toast bread B.Italian noodles
C.Chips D.Sticky candy
2、How did Professor Hilton feel after analyzing how many people chose to eat dropped food?
A.Puzzled B.Upset
C.Satisfied D.Astonished
3、According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A.Most men would follow the "5-second" rule.
B.People who would eat food dropped on the floor are in the minority.
C.Bacteria are easier to transfer from cement floors than carpeted surfaces.
D.Food dropped on the cement floor is less likely to be polluted than that on the carpet.
4、What can be learned from the passage?
A.The food which is dropped on the floor can be eaten safely.
B.The research may provide some scientific evidence to the "5-second rule".
C.The bacteria have no negative effect on the safety of food.
D.People surveyed in the research are willing to accept the idea.

25.(10分)What is erosion(腐蚀)? Erosion is simply when soil is transported on the earth's surface from one location to another by a natural cause.
This is easy to imagine. Picture a sandcastle on a beach. This sandcastle is particularly beautiful, the work of a whole long, hot summer afternoon. It has three towers, with a great wall running all around. Small square houses sit in an open area in the center. From the tallest tower flies a Pop-sicle-wrapper flag from a small twig flagpole. Its builder sits back, proudly admiring her work. But it is late, and the tide is coming in, bringing the water closer. Finally, the castle is hit with a giant wave. As it pulls out, the builder sees there is nothing left but bits of the towers and a small broken twig. Where has the san d gone? Not very far, really. It’s moving around the water that will wash back and forth across the beach all day. It’s spread around the beach next to the castle. However, to our eyes, it has disappeared. This is also the way with erosion. Parts of the earth seem to disappear but have really just been moved around.
A common example of water changing the landscape is sinkholes. Sinkholes are formed when underground water wears away the dirt and rock that surrounds it.
Eventually, the hole underneath the ground is so big, and the earth above it so thin that the surface collapses into the hole, taking with it anything unlucky enough to be on the surface at the time. Sinkholes occur naturally and have been around a very long time. Today, though, many sinkholes are caused by the action of human beings.
In fact, today, human beings are one of the things helping to speed up erosion of the earth. Scientists believe that by pumping water from underground, moving sand dunes and other naturally-occurring anti-erosion measures, humans have allowed erosion of the earth to speed up by as much as 40 times. This means that beaches around the world are disappearing, more sinkholes are opening up, and farmland is rapidly becoming desert.
1、What’s the author’s purpose of descri bing a sandcastle in Paragraph 2?
A.To show the destructive force of nature.
B.To recall his happy childhood.
C.To catch the reader’s attention.
D.To explain what erosion is.
2、What does the underlined word “it” refer to in the passage?
A.The hole.
B.The ground.
C.The earth.
D.The surface.
3、According to the passage, which of the following can you infer may NOT be the cause of sink-holes?
A.A lot of high-rises have been built.
B.People pump water from underground.
C.Too many mines have been opened up.
D.Underground water takes away dirt and rock around it.
4、Based on the passage, what is most likely to be one result of erosion? A.Desertification will speed up.
B.Sinkholes will be everywhere.
C.Many plant species will disappear.
D.Earthquakes will happen more often.
