Unit 2 Robots
A
You use her as a shoulder to cry on. She texts you back with casual jokes. But she, Xiaoice, is only a virtual chatbot.
Xiaoice, Microsoft's latest artificial intelligence robot, was briefly released in 2014, and returned to WeChat in 2015, where she_became_a_big_hit. Millions of young Chinese now exchange messages with her daily, The New York Times reported. On WeChat, Xiaoice is an official account. After following it, users can start textbased conversations with Xiaoice.
“X iaoice's incredible learning ability was why people loved to talk with her,” Liu Jinchang, a researcher at Hightech Research and Development Center under the Ministry of Science and Technology, told China Daily. Apart from her ability to identify photos and send emojis (表情符号) in conversations, Xiaoice gains 45 percent of her knowledge from interacting with users, China Daily reported.
Chatbot programs first appeared in the mid1960s in the US. Driven by top tech companies, they are becoming smarter and more common. For instance, IBM's latest artificial intelligence program served as an academic consultant at Australia's Deakin University, answering students' questions about course schedules and financial aid. Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa have been used as voice assistants who can read news, play music and even make jokes for their users.
These programs are expected to move beyond smartphones, into televisions, cars and living room, The New York Times pointed out. However, it may take decades before scient ists develop a “Samantha”, the advanced chatbot seen in the fiction film Her. In the film, Samantha sparks a romantic relationship with her user played by US actor Joaquin Phoenix. Many viewers are enthusiastic about this fantasy of virtual soul mate.

In a science fiction future, we'll arrive at the hotel in our driverless taxi, check in at the reception desk staffed by androids, and then follow the robot porter (行李员) as it carries our bags to our room.
However, this is already a science fact.
Robots are already working in some hotels—the Hennna Hotel in Sasebo, Japan is manned entirely by machines.
In a Marriott hotel in Ghent, Belgium, a humanoid robot named Mario has been working since June 2015. He welcomes guests in 19 languages.
Another robot has just taken up a concierge (接待员) position at a Hilton McLean hotel in Virginia.
So the rise of the hotel machines seems unstoppable, but will guests really want to stay in robotrun hotels? And will it come at the cost of human interaction and human jobs?
U.S. online booking company Travelzoo gathered some statistics. Of the 6,000 travelers surveyed globally, nearly two thirds said they'd be comfortable with the idea of being looked after by machines.
Richard Singer, Travelzoo's European president, says he welcomes the day when apps and machines will get us from lobbies (大堂) to rooms.
But how to stop a robot stealing your job?
“A lot of jobs considered nonautomatable in the past are now automatable,”said Carl Benedikt Frey from University of Oxford, an expert on technology and employment.
But Frey says it's still too early to say what effect robots will have on employment levels.
In other words, even though robots may soon be checking us in, that's no excuse for us to be out.

Holiday gift buying can feel a litte empty, when all of those endless lists, long lines at the shopping center and dollars spent lead to a 5minute excite ment of flying wrapping paper. __1__ The following tips can help make gift giving more meaningful for both the giver and the receiver.
1. Know the person
The most important thing in the exchanging of gifts is that it shows you really know the person well, and you really care about him. __2__
2. Donate in their name
__3__ Research suggests that happier people give more to others, and that giving more makes people happier. Moreover, charityrelated happiness is highest when people give in a way that promotes social connection. So, try giving to the less fortunate in someone's name this holiday season.
3. Give handmade goods or handmedowns
__4__ A study suggests that people feel that homemade items show more love, and love is what they want to express to the gift receiver.
Family heirlooms (传家宝) may be another good gift option. A 2009 study found that when families hand down even a very depersonalized thing—money—to the generations, the symbolic value of the cash is greater than the numerical value alone.
4. Provide chances for participation
If there's a golden rule of gifts, though, it's this: __5__People who receive experiential gifts, such as concert tickets or a zoo membership, feel more connected to the gift giver than people who received material gifts.
A.But it doesn't have to be that way.
B.Give experiences rather than objects.
C.The new and storebought is not always best.
D.That is always beyond their expectation.
E.That means catering to another's pleasure.
F.Giving gifts to friends or to charity is linked to happiness.
G.Start listing every person you plan to give a holiday gift

3.F根据本段标题“2.Donate in their name”和文中的“charityrelated happiness”可知,选F项。

5.B 根据下文的“People who receive experiential gifts, such as concert tickets or a zoo membership, feel more connected to the gift giver than people who received material gifts”可知,让收礼物的人去体验比送实物的效果更好,所以选B项。

apologize to sb. for sth.
