13、The Smith family moved to the United States in 1981. At that time, they decided to stop speaking Spanish at home and only communicate in English. This was because they were now living in an English-speaking country. Now the Smith children are adults, and they sometimes travel to Spain to visit their family and friends. But they cannot communicate with them. Unfortunately this is common. When people move to new countries, they often leave their own customs and mother language behind. This is a mistake because there are many advantages to knowing more than one language.
If you can speak more than one language, you can communicate directly with more people around the world. You do not have to depend on others to talk for you, so you’re more independent. People who know only one language must use others to help them communicate.
Furthermore, speaking a second language also allows people to experience other cultures and customs more effectively. Local expressions, vocabulary, and even jokes can have a powerful effect on a person’s understanding of another culture. So, knowing more than one language increases your knowledge of other cultures.
Finally, having more multi-language speakers improves relationships between countries. If people from different countries can communicate well, the world can become closer. Countries will then have more respect for each other and better understand each other’s problems.
It’s clear that knowing more than one language is really good. In fact, there are no disadvantages. It is very sad that many people don’t try to learn another language. It is even worse when people let themselves forget th eir mother language and become silenced.

17、The stereotype(模式化的思想) is that Americans are lazy, but studies show that people in the USA get less vacation time than people in other parts of the world. A typical American worker gets two or three weeks off out of a whole year for vacation, but most US workers cannot. They usually have to be spread out throughout the year. Even when US workers are on vacation. they are often expected to be in communication with their bosses by email and mobile phone. Most US businesses do not encourage their employees(雇员) to take all the vacation days they are allowed to. In fact. most US companies discourage it.
Other countries, especially countries in Europe, have much more vacation time. In Germany many people have six weeks of paid vacation. Maybe this is why Europeans and other travellers take a vacation in far-off foreign places. Most American families like to stay closer to their homes, hardly leaving the country.
Most companies in countries outside the USA have to give paid time off to their employees. However, in the USA there is no law requiring employers to give workers paid vacation. In fact the USA is the only developed country that doesn't promise to give yearly time off to workers. There have been efforts to pass laws giving US workers one week of paid vacation, but so far those efforts have not been successful.
Even when US workers do have time off, many are afraid to take it because they worry they may lose their jobs. Other workers worry that if they go on vacation, they will have a mountain of work when they return.

18、I remember the green coat in my fifth and sixth grades.
When I needed a new jacket, my mother asked what kind I wanted. I described something like bikers wear. She listened long. I thought she understood for sure the kind I wanted.
The next day when I got home from school, I discovered on my bed, a jacket which was not what I had expected. I went close to the jacket slowly, as if it were a stranger.
From the kitchen mother shouted that my jacket was in the wardrobe(衣柜). I rushed and pulled at the clothes in the wardrobe, hoping the jacket on the bed wasn't for me but my brother. No luck, I wanted to cry because it was so ugly and so big. But I knew I'd have to wear it a long time before I'd have a new one. I looked at the jacket, like an enemy, thinking bad things before I took off my old and small jacket.
I put the big jacket on. I stood in front of the mirror(镜子), turning right and left. I looked ugly. I threw it on my brother's bed and looked at it for a long time before I put it on and went out, smiling a "thank you" to my mom.

19、A White Lie
There’s no doubt that we should be honest to others in modern society. However, as we all know, everyone tells a lie in our daily life from time to time. But should we tell a lie or not while communicating with others? From my point of view, it’s quite necessary for us to lie to others if we want to get on well with others.
But when, why and where? It’s really a meaningful question. For examp le, when some of relatives get a cancer, he or she is sure to pass away soon. At this moment, should we be the so-called ‘honest’, and tell him the truth that he is going to die. I do believe most of us would choose to hide the fact.
Therefore, sometimes we have no choice but to tell a white lie, which can make the situation more positive. As a result, I’m for the point of telling a white lie when it is helpful or necessary.。
