Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester(学期). A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice.
For every course that he follows, a student is given a grade, which is recorded and the record is available for the student to show to potential employers. All this imposes (增加) a constant pressure and stress of work, but in spite of this, some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating, has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the
operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.

Michelle Obama, Kate Moss and Samantha Cameron are three of the most stylish women on the planet but it seems they have their daughters rather than their style know how to thank for that. New research has shown that women with daughters tend to be more stylish than mothers of sons;
a fact partly because of the style advice their daughters offer as they get older.
78 percent of women over the age of 50 say they would be more than happy to let their daughters choose a complete outfit for them. However, just five percent of women say they would turn to their sons for style advice, while 28 percent believe that mothers of boys are less fashionable than women with girls.
“Women who don’t have daughters become less interested in s tyle as they grow older but having a daughter may keep alive her interest in looking great,” comments psychologist Honey Langcaster-James. “And, because of their close relationship, they also have a source of support and encouragement when it comes to thei r style decisions.”
More than a quarter of women believe that Mums who have sons are less fashion-conscious than Mums with daughters. The most common reasons for this are that daughters are more critical, offer good advice and inspiration, and add an element of competition to look the best while sons don’t seem to care and aren’t as strict as daughters.
Interestingly, although mothers tend to rely on their daughters’ style tips, their confidence isn’t reciprocated, with 40 percent of women between the age o f 19 and 34 saying they wouldn’t allow their mothers to shop for them as what their mothers would choose for them would not be as good as they expected.
And although they might not appreciate the fashion advice, the research, which was conducted by online retailer Gray & Osbourn, showed that daughters do still need their mothers with 71 percent saying they chat to their female parent every day.
“Overall, the research shows just how important relationships are between mothers and daughters,” added Langcaster-James, “and just how much women appreciate an honest and trustworthy opinion.”
36. The opening paragraph is mainly to show _____.
A. girls influence their mothers’ style decision.
B. women with children are often less stylish
C. mothers like to follow their children’s advice
D. boys are actually better advisors than girls
37. Which of the following may Langcaster-James agree with?
A. Daughters usually love their mothers more than sons do.
B. It’s hard for boys to get along well with thei r mothers.
C. Mothers without daughters show less interest in style.
D. Girls are more independent than boys in some ways.
38. It can be inferred from the passage that girls _____.
A. show more interest in science than boys
B. care more about what their mothers wear
C. can help a lot to solve family problems
D. are good at encouraging other people
39. By saying “their confidence isn’t reciprocated” in Paragraph 5, the author means that _____.
A. some women would not like to follow their mothers’ style advice
B. some women aren’t sure what to wear when attending a party
C. some women don’t like to choose clothes for their mothers
D. some women often show no confidence in themselves
40. What does the author mainly tell us in the passage?
A. It confuses many parents how to talk with their kids.
B. Daughters prefer to talk with their mums instead of dads.
C. It is important for parents to respect their children’s choice.
D. Mothers of girls are more fashionable than those of boys

The gentle giant of our oceans are whale sharks. It’s the biggest whale shark and can reach as long as 41.5 feet, and these amazing creatures are not only the biggest shark, but they are also biggest fish of any kind.
Whale sharks have a lifespan of 70 years on average, and they spend their days gently swimming in the warm and tropical oceans.
Their teeth are the size of match heads, and while their jaws could be powerful, they have never tended to attack humans. Their teeth play no role in eating, as plankton (浮游生物) does not need to be chewed. They are to be found in numbers in the warmer oceans and they prefer the deep waters of the open oceans. They tend to travel alone.
Several times a year they gather together in certain spots where plankton is plentiful. Those areas are all within a 30o north or south latitude from the equator. And sadly whale sharks are targeted by commercial fisheries at those spots.
How easy it must be for those fishermen to catch those beautiful creatures who can only swim at 3.5 miles per hour! So great a loss in numbers have they suffered, that whale sharks are now listed as one of the endangered species. Some countries have started to take measures to protect the whale sharks from extinction.
The Philippines, India and Taiwan have all banned the fishing, selling, importing and
exporting of whale sharks for commercial purpose. However, the law does not seem to be effective because the hunting and killing still goes on today, especially in Taiwan and the Philippines. Each whale shark can fetch around $21,000. In parts of Asia they are known as the “money shark”.
The mighty dollar, wins again, at great cost to our habitat, and we will not know what we have lost until we have lost it forever. Therefore, it is high time for us to do something for the whale sharks.
41. We can learn from the passage that whale sharks _____.
A. usually live a life of more than 70 years
B. always travel in the ocean in groups
C. depend on their teeth to harvest their food
D. live in the deep waters of the warmer oceans
42. Why can the whale sharks be caught easily?
A. Because they swim in the oceans at a slow speed.
B. Because they are surrounded by so many fishermen.
C. Because they often gather together in great numbers.
D. Because they never tend to attack humans in the water.
43. We know that in Taiwan and the Philippines, _____.
A. fishermen are earning little by catching the whale sharks
B. fishermen have stopped hunting and killing the whale sharks
C. fishermen are continuing to hunt and kill the whale sharks
D. importing and exporting whale sharks is allowed
44. It is implied in the passage that _____.
A. whale sharks will be extinct even if they are protected
B. whale sharks are the most dangerous marine animals
C. there is no law about banning the fishing of whale sharks
D. the huge profit is to blame for the decreasing numbers of whale sharks
45. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To call on people to protect whale sharks.
B. To guide people how to fish and kill whale sharks.
C. To advise the government to make related laws.
D. To analyze the value of whale sharks.

A farmer complained about his wife’s working slowly and wasting time. However, when playing her part and doing her housework instead, he met with various diffic ulties and couldn’t do the job well.
According to the story, everyone shall do their duties, or how awful it would be! So it is necessary for us to make best use of our advantages and avoid our disadvantages.
As students, we must regard learning as our first duty. We should read widely and lay a solid foundation for further study. Of course, we should be diligent and learn from each other so as to become an independent and critical-thinking person in the future.
Indeed, everyone has her or his own part to play. Each part for us to play well will make our life or the world better and better. Just as the famous saying goes, “All for one, and one for all.”。
