(2022·山东·泰安市基础教育教学研究室高一期末)Elements of Latin have made their way into many western countries. Data varies, but as much as 70% of words in English have a Latin or Greek root.
By learning more about these roots and how they combine (结合) to create words, you will have an advantage in understanding new words, even if you’ve never seen them before.
The great thing is that it’s not hard to learn these roots and recognize the patterns. You’re not learning the whole language with its grammar and difficult points. You just need to memorize some parts of the vocabulary that you often see in English.
So how do word roots work?
Every word has a root. This part contains the key to a word’s meaning. Take the word “happy”, for example. This word only contains the root, which means full of joy. There’s nothing more to the meaning of the word in this form.
Some words, however, have extra parts. We call these affixes (词缀), including prefixes, the part attached before the root, and suffixes, the part attached behind the root. Based on the additional meaning of the prefixes and suffixes, the meaning of the final word will be shaped to mean something new.
Take the word “autobiography” for example. The root is “bio”, meaning life. You may have noticed that many words with “bio” have something to do with life or living beings—biology, biography, and so on. When the suffixes “graph”, meaning to write, is added to it, it means a story about someone’s or something’s life. “Auto” means by oneself. Altogether, an “autobiography” is a story about a person’s life, written by the person himself or herself.
In a word, a better grasp of word roots can make you understand the English language better, and will help you with your vocabulary recognition and memory skills.

(2022·上海·格致中学高一期中)For more than 600 years, English speakers used “because” as a conjunction meaning “for the reason that,” dutifully following it with a full clause of explanation (or at least the word of). Then, a few years ago, this old word suddenly began bursting with new life, as people started using it in a manner that di sobeyed all grammatical rules: How do you know climate change is real? “Because science.” Why are you sleepy? “Because wine.” Academics became nervously excited, debating whether “because” had evolved into a preposition and if so, which types of nouns would appropriately fit this new construction. But there was little disagreement on the driving force behind the change.
The title of Gretchen McCulloch's new book, “Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language”, is in honor of this kind of linguistic change —evolution made possible by the dominance of the web and the never-before-seen explosion of informal writing that has come with it. Her aim is to explain how the internet has shaped language. McCulloch is an internet linguist, and her book about internet language is, fittingly, a mixture drawn from academic and internet cultures. In some measure, Because Internet offers a history of the Web along with an introduction to linguistics and a survey of the most fascinating research from her field, including a study that took advantage of geotags on social media to show how new words spread from place to place. Her work is also a well-researched retort (反驳)to grammarians who think technology is to blame for why kids are engaging in what grammarians bel ieve are lazy, senseless talks. On the contrary, she argues, it’s making us more creative in our writing than ever before.
The formal, unemotional writing we were all taught in the classroom simply won't do in places designed for
virtual communications, Mc Culloch explains. And she breaks down the many ways we’ve managed to use keyboards to restore the dynamism of face-to-face interaction. For a start: We tap all caps when we FEEL LIKE SHOUTING. We use the abbreviation lol not just to mean “laughing out loud” but also to get out of awkward situations or to offer empathy. And we lengthen words to show just how much we feeeeeeeeel.
8.According to the passage, which of the following examples best reflects how people use the word “because” nowadays when answering the question “why were you late for school this morning?”
A.Because the traffic was bad. B.Because of the traffic.
C.Because traffic. D.Because I got stuck in a traffic jam.
9.The book “Because Internet" informs its readers about________.
A.how to keep pace with the evolution of language
B.how to have effective communication online
C.how to organize meaningful sentences in English
D.how to use new words and signals on social media
10.Gretchen McCulloch believes the way we talk has changed because________.
A.we have developed abbreviations to replace many words
B.we can no longer show our identity through the language we use
C.the explosion of informal writing in virtual communication has evolved the language
D.today's kids are not taught at school how to communicate with others

(2022·广东·惠州市惠阳区泰雅实验学校高一期中)One is not born able to speak a language. One is born able to make a noise. I have heard babies cry in America and in China. I can’t tell any difference. But when I hear someone from America speak English and hear someone speak Chinese, I can tell you there are a lot of
differences.
I believe a common problem with Chinese students’ learning English is that they were not taught to think in English. They have an idea spoken in English and want to translate the idea into Chinese, then they think in Chinese of the proper reply and translate it into English. After a long period of speaking the language, one begins to think in the foreign language naturally. You will learn faster if you begin to think in English at the very beginning of your study. Many students ask me: What can I do to improve my spoken English?
My reply is: The more English you speak, the better English you will speak. There are many things you can do to improve your spoken English. Of course, the best way is to live where English is spoken as a language of the country.
15.The cries of American and Chinese babies are _______.
A.different B.the same C.not like each other D.like each other
16.The underlined sentence (in Paragraph 2) means that_______.
A.some teachers didn’t teach students to think in English
B.teachers never gave the students the way of learning English
C.st udents didn’t remember the way teachers taught them
D.teachers didn’t want their students to think in English
17.The underlined word “they” (in Paragraph 2) refers to“_______”.
A.Chinese students B.English students
C.Chinese teachers D.English teachers
(2022·福建三明·高一期末)Americans often try to say things as quickly as possible. So, for some expressions, we use the first letters of the words instead of saving each word. Many common expressions or long names are shortened this way.
B-Y-O-B is a short way of sa ying, “Bring Your Own Bottle.” The letters BYOB are often found at the bottom of a written invitation to a simple social, event or gathering of friends. For example, let’s say I had a New Year’s Eve party. I might include on the invitation. “Please come to my party and BYOB.” The bottle each person brings is what the person wants to drink at the party or wants to share.
However, an invitation to a special event -such as a wedding-would never say BYOB.An invitation to an official or very special event often has other letters written at the bottom. The letters are R-S-V-P. These letters represent the French expression “Repondez S'il V ous Plait.” In English the words mean “Respond If It Pleases You.” Americans use the letters as a short way to say, “Please answer this invitation.”
Another expression usually used for business and not parties is A-S-A-P. So, a colleague might say she needs
something done ASAP. It means as soon as possible. She might also need something done by C-O-B.That means she wants to finish it by “Close Of Business” or the end of the work day.
Beginning letters are often used to represent the names of universities. A famous one is MIT. That is short for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Another major university is UCLA.Almost no one ever says its real name, the University of California at Los Angeles. That takes way too long!
18.Why do Americans like using the first letters of the words?
A.They want to save time. B.They think it interesting.
C.They like doing things differently. D.They love creating new expressions.
19.Which of the following may a couple use in their wedding invitations?
A.B-Y-O-B.B.B.R-S-V-P. C.A-S-A-P. D.C-O-B.
20.How is the text mainly developed?
A.By analyzing causes. B.By listing examples.
C.By following time order. D.By making comparisons.
21.What is the main purpose of this text?
A.To describe the unpopularity of the formal language.
B.To explain the usage of some daily expressions.
C.To advise people to speak more simple English.
D.To introduce one of the Americans’ language habits.
(2020·安徽蚌埠·高一期末)Foreign visitors to the UK might be disappointed when they learn that not everyone there speaks like Harry Potter and his friends. Usually, there’s an assumption by many non-Brits that everyone in Britain speaks with what’s known as a Received Pronunciation accent, also called “the Queen’s English”. However, while many people do talk this way, most Britons speak in their own regional accents.
Scouse, Glaswegian and Black Country dialect- from Liverpool, Glasgow and the West Midlands -are just three of the countless non-RP accents that British people speak with. There are even differences in accents between towns or cities just 30 kilometers apart. What is even more disappointing is that not speaking in a RP accent may mean a British person is judged and even treated differently in their everyday life.
In a study by The University of South Wales, videos of people reading a passage in three different UK accents were shown to a second group of people. The group then rated how intelligent they thought the readers sounded. The lowest-rated accent was Brummie, native to people from Birmingham, a city whose accent is considered working class. However, there is no need to be disappointed though you are not speaking in an RP accent. In fact, doing the opposite may even give you strength.
Kong Seong- jae, 25, is from Seoul. After studying in the UK, he picked up several regional accents. He’s now famous for his online videos, where he shows off the various accents he’s learned. “British people usually get really excited when I use some of their local dialect words, and they become much friendlier. I think it makes a bit of bond between local people and foreigners to speak in their local accent,” he said.
So if you’re working on perfecting your British accent, try to speak like someone from Liverpool, Glasgow or Birmingham. You may not sound like Harry Potter, but you are likely to make more friends.
22.What can we learn from paragraph 1?
A.Most Brito ns speak the Queen’s English.
B.Foreign visitors are disappointed at their own spoken English.
C.Non-Brits usually hold that all Britons speak in a RP accent.
D.The dialect is less important than the RP accent.
23.What do people think of the Brummie accent?
A.It is closest to the RP accent. B.It is smart and easy to understand.
C.It belongs to the people of the working class. D.It is preferred by foreign visitors to the UK.
24.What does the underlined phrase “doing the opposite” in Paragraph 3 refer t o?
A.Speaking with the RP accent. B.Speaking with regional accents.
C.Speaking with the Brummie accent. D.Speaking like Harry Potter.
25.What is the passage mainly about ?
A.How much British people value the RP accent.
B.A comparison between different British accent.
C.Some facts about the RP accent and regional accents in Britain.
