Most parents believe it is difficult to help their childr en with science. But you don’t need a high scientific degree to teach your children science. All you need is that you’re willing to try, to see the world, and to 2 the time to encourage their natural curiosity (好奇).
You can help by having an active attitude (态度) towards science yourself. Then start 3 by asking your children questions about the things you see every day. And then listen to their answers without judging (评判) them, which will 4 their confidence (自信), and help you decide just what your children know or do not know.
Different kids have different interest, so they need different kinds of science projects. 13、Many young people all over the world love to travel and see the world. Have you heard of backpackers? They are normally young people who travel cheaply with just one bag and comfortable walking boots. They buy local food in supermarkets to save money and at the same time become friends with local people.
Some people prefer adventure tours. Brave people may try bungee(蹦极) jumping from the bridge overlooking the Victoria Falls in Africa with only a rope around their legs. Some enjoy the challenge of rock climbing in the Alps in Switzerland. Others may go ice skiing in the Rocky Mountains in the USA.
Have you ever heard of an ecotourism (生态旅游)? It means a holiday in which people come close to nature but are very careful not to destroy the nature beauty or living things in the area. How can this be possible? Let's read an interview with people who enjoyed a swimming with dolphins tour.
Interviewer what was the most exciting part of your holiday?
Sharon from South Africa I felt excited when I heard the sound of wild dolphins beside me in the water and then
swimming directly under me. An image I will never forget.
Xavier from Portugal There were two dolphins below us swimming downwards. One stopped and looked back at me as if to say “What are those strange things?” Fantastic!
Interviewer Did you feel that your holiday helped local people and areas to keep their beautiful environment?
Jane from New Zealand The hotel and the whale and dolphin watching companies hire local people. They used to hunt those whales and dolphins, but now they can earn money from tourism and mustn’t kill whales and dolphins. Not many boats are used at the same time so these animals aren't disturbed. The boat companies also work to educate the local schools about the importance of protecting these wonderful animals.
Helen from England I am glad they are not killing the whales and dolphins any more, but the cars and boats use fuel(燃料) which could cause pollution and make the sea dirtier.
Well, what do you think? Thousands of people visit the Forbidden City or the Great Wall of China every year. 14、Look around and you’ll see people busy on their smartphones. Smartphones do make our lives easier. But have you ever thought about what they mean to your eyes?
According to a study, half of British people own smartphones and they spend an average(平均) of two hours a day using them. There has been a 35% increase in the number of people in the UK who suffer from shortsightedness(近视) since smartphones were introduced there in 1997.
Staring(盯) at smartphones for long time gives you dry eyes. When looking at something in the distance, your eyes automatically blink(自动眨眼) a certain number of times. However, when you look at things closer to your face, the blinking slows down. This reduces the amount of tears and causes discomfort in your eyes.
Another bad habit is using smartphones in dark rooms before going to sleep. If you look at a bright screen while your pupils(瞳孔) become larger, too much light enters your eyes. This can do harm to the eyes and cause a disease called glaucoma(青光眼).
While you’re probably not going to stop using to your smartphone, there are a few things you can do to protect your eyes.
Hold your phone at least 30 centimetres away from your eyes when using it.

17、Shyness can be an unhappy feeling. But the good news is, you're not alone. Scientists say that more than 40 percent of teenagers and adults consider themselves shy. Shyness is feeling a little nervous or as if you want to hide when you're around other people or in a new situation.
___ Scientists say such things as genetics(遗传基因),life experiences, and environment can influence whether a person is shy. For example, in some families, everybody seems to be shy.
What happens if you are shy? Well, being shy may cause you to avoid or miss opportunities you would enjoy.
How do people overcome (克服)shyness? This is what Gilbert tells us. "When I started off trying to get over being shy, I decided to do little steps at a time, including practicing smiling and saying hi to people. And it worked for me. “
But shyness is not the kind of thing that most people can get over overnight. Overcoming shyness take time and needs practice.
Here are some tips given by scientists.
Think of what to talk about before you leave home. Prepare things to talk about before you're in a social situation. For example, if you know your classmates are interested in an upcoming event, learn about it so you can join in the conversations.
Let people know you're shy. If you're shy, just show it. Instead of letting people guess, tell them the truth. Explain that you are shy and feel nervous but enjoy talking to people.
Make things easy for the other person. Remember, you’re not the only shy person around. Do what you think might help others feel good-for example, say hello or smile.
Pick one social skill to practice at a time. Start simply. For example, smile or be the first person to say hi. Choose skills you feel comfortable enough with to practice for a day, a week, a month, or even a year.
1.Which of the following can be put in the blank in Paragraph2?
A.What is shyness?
B.What makes people shy?
C.Can shyness be good for us?
D.Can we overcome shyness?
2.The example of Gilbert in Paragraph 4 is given to _____.
A.show how people overcome shyness
B.introduce a shy girl called Gilbert
C.tell the right time to practice smiling
D.explain the steps of overcoming shyness
3.What does the underlined word "overnight" in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?
A.Correctly.
B.Suddenly.
C.Slowly.
D.Finally.
4.Which of the following is the right way to overcome shyness?
A.Don’t let others know that you are shy.
B.Wait for others to say hello to you first.
C.Choose several skills to practice at a time.
D.Get ready before you join in a social situation.

19、Dear Peppa,
Thank you for your last letter asking about our discussion on low-carbon lifestyle. Here is something about it.
We can do a lot in our daily life to achieve the goal of low carbon life. First, we’d better turn off lights if possible and spend less time watching TV or surfing the Internet. Saving water also matters much. Besides, we should sort out the rubbish, hoping that we might recycle some, which will surely benefit us a great deal. In addition, we suggest using handkerchiefs instead of tissues so that we can prevent more trees from being cut down. More importantly, when we go out, walking, riding bikes or taking buses should be our first choice, which contributes to a cleaner world.
Best wishes,
Yours,
Li Hua。
