You may have heard that polar bears are endangered. What does that mean exactly? Endangered means there are very few of that kind still alive. Someday they might become disappearing. You may wonder what people can do to help endangered animals.
People can protect plants and animals from becoming endangered or disappearing. One way is to protect the animals' or plants' habitats. Governments can set aside land for parks. No one is allowed to disturb the habitat inside park lands. People cannot build houses there. They cannot hunt animals. No one can collect plants or animals from inside the park. Mining (采矿) and drilling for oil (采油) is not allowed in parks.
People can make laws that protect plants and animals. Laws can be made to protect habitats. Hunting laws do not allow people to hunt certain animals. Some laws limit the number of trees that can be cut down in forests. Other laws say that people cannot build homes, factories, or stores in certain places. Laws can protect the air and water from pollution.

The English weather can be quite cold and wet during the winter months with long periods of wind and rain. So you are supposed to take lots of warm clothing with you to the UK, buy a good, heavy coat, a scarf, a hat and some gloves.
Upon arriving in England some students are puzzled by the differences between England and China. It is normal to feel scared and worried, but it is important not to give up. If you do not understand someone, simply ask them to repeat what they said more slowly and clearly. You are supposed not to pretend to understand if you have not! It doesn’t take long for most students to understand most of what they hear. After a couple weeks you’ll begin adapting to(适应) your new environment, and things will become easier.
Try to speak as much English as possible, and this will help you at school and will also make it easier for you to make friends with English students. If you have Chinese friends at school, speak to them in English when other none-Chinese students are present. It would be impolite to discuss things around them in a language they can not understand.
If you get home-sick, try to keep yourself busy. Join clubs and societies, or play sport. This is much better than worrying about your parents. Sitting alone in your room and feeling sad won’t help you at all!

Lots of kids love video games. In fact, they like them so much that they might always hear something like this from mom or dad: "Enough! Turn off that thing and find something else to do!"
It can be good advice. Too much of anything is just too much. It's true that certain video games can be good for you. But too much video game playing can cause health problems. It's hard to get enough active play and exercise if you're always inside playing video games. And without enough exercise, kids can become overweight. Really too much video games also could affect other important things, like friendships and how well a kid does in school. But here's the good news: Playing video games some of the time can be OK. Just aim for no more than 1 or 2 hours a day and choose proper games.
A good game will be the right one for how old you are. Your mom or dad can help find out which games you can play. If you can choose one that gets you up and moving, that's even better. You might challenge your mom, dad — or even your grandma — to play badminton in a game. Could your grandma be a good badminton player? Time to find out!

It used to seem like sports were just for boys and men. When high school students went to watch a game after school, it was always a boys’team. Anyone who turned on the TV in the evening to watch the sports report would see the latest news about men in sports.
No wonder that everyone believed that sports were for men, not women. It seemed like there were no good women athletes and no important sports stories about women.
A little research shows that this never was true. Women have taken part in sports and physical fitness (身体健康) activities since the time of the ancient Olympic Games. Even though women did not take part in the contests at ancient Olympia, young girls did take part in foot races in separate (分开的) games in honor of the goddess Hera. The modern Olympics did not include women athletes when it began in 1896, but women did take part in the next Olympics held four years later in 1900 in Paris, France. The nineteen women who entered that year’s Olympics competed (对抗) in tennis, croquet, and golf. Since that year, women’s participation (参与) in the Olympics has increased steadily. In the 2000 Olympics held in Sydney, Australia, over 4,000 women took part. They competed in 25 of the 28 Olympic sports.
46. Sports seemed to be mostly for __________ in the old days.
A. women and girls
B. men and boys
C. girls and boys
D. men and women
47. Women ___________
A. didn’t take part in sports in ancient times.
B. were allowed to take part in ancient Olympic Games.
C. didn’t allowed to take part in modern Olympic Games.

A. Women entered the Olympic Games for the first time.
B. Frenchwomen took part in sports for the first time.
C. Paris is the fashion capital.
D. It is the second session of the Modern Olympic Games.

It was a very foggy day in London. Mr. Smith had arrived from Edinburgh to go to a very important meeting, but no buses or taxis were running because the drivers were not able to see more than a yard in front of them. It was still early for his meeting, so he thought that he would walk to the office. But he saw that nobody was even trying to walk anywhere.
While he was standing there, saying unhappy things about the fog, and thinking that he would have to telephone to the office and say that he was not able to come, a young man came up to him and said, "Sir, if you want to go somewhere, I can guide you."
Mr. Smith was very surprised and could hardly believe his ears. He asked, “How can you find the way when there is thick fog everywhere?”
"Don’t worry, sir," answered the young man. "Believe me." So Mr. Smith told the young man where he wanted to go, and they started. They walked quite fast, turning corners and crossing roads in different places.
At last, Mr. Smith thought, "Perhaps this man is foolish, he would show me a wrong place." But a minute later, the young man stopped and said, "Here is the place, sir." 4. Mr. Smith was surprised to find that he had really reached the office. He gave the young man a pound and then said, "How did you find the way in the fog?"
