I work in a nursing home and my job is to take care of the elderly.
This year, an old lady that I cared for, Alice, had gone through a difficult time. She got dementia and so she had been in the hospital twice. In November I was finally able to get her back to her “home”.

When she finally realized that the happy moment was not going to happen, she was very sad. Knowing that her daughter was not enough to make her feel happy, I hated the idea of her being alone on the holiday!

I took her to her old neighborhood church where all her friends were there. We got to the church early. Then soon some of her friends came and they went over to greet her and sit with her.

Traveling to every part of the world gets easier, but how well do we know and understand each other.
Here’s a simple test. Imagine you are planning to hold a meeting at four o’clock. What time should you expect you foreign business friends to arrive? If they are Germans, they’ll arrive on time. If they are Americans, they’ll probably be 15 minutes early. If they are Englishmen, they’ll be 15minutes late, and you should allow up to an hour for the Italians.
The British seemed to think since the English language was widely used in the world, people would always understand what they do. However, they found they were completely wrong. For example, the British are happy to have a business lunch and discuss matters and have a drink during the meal. The Japanese prefer not to work while eating. Lunch is a time for them to relax and they don’t drink at lunchtime. The Germans like to talk business before dinner. The French like to eat first and talk afterwards. They have to be well fed and watered before they discuss anything.

meeting, who will be the last to arrive?
A. The Englishmen.
B. The Americans.
C. The Italians.
D. Both the Englishmen and the Italians.
53. What do the Japanese like to do at lunchtime?
A. To drink.
B. To eat only.

55. By giving us the two examples, the writer means to show us that ______.
A. different countries have different cultures in different parts of the world
B. the Germans are more serious and have good living habits
C. the Italians are careless people and they are never on time for everything
D. the French people are very lazy. They prefer eating and drinking more.
D
Why do Americans struggle with watching their weight, while the French, who consume rich food, continue to stay thin? Now a research by Cornell University suggests how life style and decisions about eating may affect weight. Researchers concluded that the French tend to stop eating when they feel full. However, Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over.
According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, a health expert, the French see eating as an important part of their life style. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while Americans see eating as something to be squeezed between the other daily activities. Mercola believes Americans lose the ability to sense when they are actually full. So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped. In addition, he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for the week. The French, instead, tend to shop daily, walking to small shops and farmers’ markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal.
After a visit to the United States, Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’t Get Fat, decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food. Today she continues to stay slim and rarely goes to the gym.
In spite of all these differences, evidence shows that recent life style changes may be affecting French eating habits. Today the rate of obesity — or extreme overweight —among adults is only 6%. However, as American fast food gains acceptance and the young reject older traditions, the obesity rate among French children has reached 17% — and is growing.

A.children and adults B.Americans and the French
C.life style and obesity D.fast food and overweight
