Fifty years ago I married my soldier sweetheart. Six weeks later, he left to fight in Korea. While he was away for that first year of our marriage, I stayed with my mum and worked hard to keep our savings for the first home. After John returned, we found a home and applied for a War Service Home Loan, which at that time took about six months to come through.
The builder of our home lived in the same street as our house and he allowed us to move in and payrent until our loan came through. The rent was one pound and ten shillings per week, which we thought fair. As we got to know our neighbors, several told us to watch our landlord as he was “sharp” and may cheat us in some way. We always replied that he had given us no cause for complaint.
The loan money came through shortly before Christmas. We were not well-off but we were happy to have our own home. One night, two weeks before Christmas, there was a knock at our door. It was our landlord and his wife. We invited them in and our landlord said, “As you know, your loan has come through and you do not have to pay me rent any more. I did not set that rent, the estate agent (房产代理商) did, and I thought it was a bit high. Every time you paid me I put ten shillings (先令,英国货币单位) away in a box. It came to 11 pou nds.”
We were surprised and delighted. To us, it was a small fortune just in time for Christmas. We were able to buy gifts for our entire family. It was the nicest thing anyone had ever done for us and we decided that we would never judge anyone on hearsay.

ARK (Absolute Return for Kids) works with seven Home-Start centres across the UK to provide understanding, trained volunteers to support problem families. Through this early intervention (干预、介入) we aim to solve child and family problems before they become so intractable that social service intervention is required.
Problem families in the UK often receive too little assistance too late. Low social service capacity (能力) means families often reach breaking point before receiving any support. Social workers have little time to build trust with the family and develop an understanding of specific problems. What is more, social workers can be regarded by families as a threat (威胁) —“They come to take our children away”.
Parents (with children under five) who suffer from illness, disability, addiction, poverty or other pressures receive visits from a trained volunteer one afternoon a week to support and advise them through period of crisis (危机). Where possible, the volunteer comes from a similar background to the people calling for help, or has personal experience of similar problems.
The effectiveness of Home-Start’s longstanding programme has been proved by a number of research reports. One study of problem families assisted by Home-Start volunteers found:
·Nearly 40% of surveyed mothers reported reduced depression.
·42% of families reported improvements in managing their children.
·Child behavioral problems reduced by 50%.
Since ARK’s involvement (参与) this success has been recognized in the Government’s Green Paper Every Child Matters. The paper recommended enlarging the programme to ensure Home-Start services are available in every community in the UK. The Government has now provided £5 million to help Home-Start achieve this goal.

63. In the UK, Home-Start services are now ______.

I went online to check if my pay was in my bank account (账户). To my amazement I discovered that not only had I been paid, a company I ’
d never worked for had also paid me! I
know I’d have been beside myself if my own salary was not in my account, so I tried to get the money back to the right person. Easier said than done.
The bank couldn’t help as it “wasn’t a bank problem.” The human-resource department at the company that paid me was unable to help as I didn’t have enough details. I rang the bank again. Thankfully I had a sympathetic call operator who gave me a name, so I again rang the company “Daniel” worked for.
I expected the bank would get in touch with me to arrange to take the money from my account and repay Daniel. I heard nothing for a month and the money remained in my account when Daniel called, explaining he’d tried to get back his money but had been unsuccessful as neither the bank nor his company felt it was their error. He had rung to ask if I could speak to the bank, but after chatting for a few minutes we realized we could probably fix this problem ourselves.
We decided I would take the money from my account and he would pick it up from me. Due to my busy job I was unable to meet Daniel personally but he left me a lovely bottle of wine in exchange for what was rightfully his. I never had any intention of keeping Daniel’s pay but red tape (繁琐手续)made it difficult to do the right thing. It all came down to two people being able to do what a huge bank and a large company couldn’t do —admit a mistake had occurred and fix it.
67. What was the attitude of the author towards the extra money in his bank account?
A. He didn’t know what to do with it.
B. He felt lucky to get it.
C. He thought of keeping it for himself.
D. He wanted to return it to the right person.
68. The underlined phrase “beside myself” (in Paragraph 1) probably means ______.
A. very grateful
B. very angry
C. really beneficial
D. really casual
69. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Daniel had been repaid when he called the author.
B. The author was to blame as he didn’t have enough details.
C. Neither the bank nor the company admitted their fault.
D. Daniel had the same name as the author’s.
70. How was the problem solved in the end?
A. The author and Daniel solved the problem themselves.
B. The bank helped to solve the problem.
C. The author gave the money back to the company.
D. The call operator offered to solve their problem.
71. From the passage we can infer that ______.
A. the bank could solve the problem soon and easily with the red tape
B. some large organizations usually have troublesome official rules
C. Daniel didn’t know the error before he contacted the author
D. the company gave the wrong account to the bank

When we Americans shop at the grocery stores today,we don’t seem to be surprised at the sight of strawberries in the winter or perfect tomatoes from Holland. In the space of a generation,we’ve become accustomed to eating food that’s never grown roots in local soil. In fact, most produce(农产品)grown in the United States travels an average of 1,500 miles before it gets sold.
Trucking, shipping and flying in food from around the country and the globe has a very bad effect on the environment and on public health. Take grapes for example. Every year, nearly 270 million pounds of grapes arrive in California, most of them shipped from Chile to the Port of Los Angeles. Their5,900-mile journey in cargo ships and trucks gives off 7,000 tons of global warming pollution each year, and enough air pollution to cause dozens of
asthma(哮喘)attacks and hundreds of missed school days in California.
The way we eat has a great influence on the health of the planet. By choosing to eat lower on the food chain, and focusing on local and organic(有机的)produce, we can reduce global warming and air pollution, avoid poisonous chemicals, support local farmers and enjoy fresh, tasty food.
People are rediscovering the benefits of buying local food. How your food is grown, stored, transported, processed and cooked can all influence how it affects climate and the environment. Transportation-related influences are particularly important for imported foods. NRDC calculated (计算) the transportation influences of importing fresh produce and wine widely consumed in California. They directly compared the climate and air quality influenced by importing these foods instead of growing and consuming them in California. Their analysis (分析) shows that — all else being equal — locally grown foods are a better choice.
72. From the passage we can learn that most produce sold at the grocery stores in the US
________.
A. is grown by local farmers
B. is from foreign countries
C. comes from far away
D. is out of season
73. What would be the effect of transportation of foods?
A. It pollutes the foods during the transportation.
B. It makes the cost of the foods much higher.
C. It makes the foods less fresh and tasteless.
D. It causes air pollution and global warming.
74. Which of the following may have a bad effect on the health of the planet?
A. Eating higher on the food chain.
B. Eating locally grown foods.
C. Eating more organic produce.
D. Eating fresh and tasty foods.
75. The main purpose of the passage is ________.
A. to help the local farmers grow and sell their produce
B. to tell people that imported foods are less healthy
C. to warn people of the harmfulness of food transportation
D. to get local people to refuse the imported foods completely

An Unforgettable Experience
Today my friend Li Hua and I took part in a wildness survival program.
Before we started, we were equipped with a compass, a map, a first-aid kit, a tent, flashlights, matches, some food and clothing, and so on. On the way we climbed three hills and swam across two rivers. We lost our way in the forest. Luckily we found the right direction with the compass. As soon as we arrived at the campsite, we put up our tents, made a fire and then started cooking. We also learned how to give first-aid. Both of us were working in high spirits. It was not until five o’clock in the afternoon that we left.
Through the program, we learned to use the knowledge gained in class to solve problems. It was quite an unforgettable experience for me.。
