第二部分阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
Chinese poetry sprang up long before written language was devised, and its poetics were formed and developed through people’s everyday labor, their songs and dances.
Of the great poets living in the 4th century BC, the most famous was Qu Yuan, born in the Kingdom of Chu. Qu Yuan and his follower Song Yu established a new style of poetry called chuci (literally poetry of the south), absorbing the romantic attributes of myth and established
the romantic style of Chinese literary creation. Qu Yuan’s major work was“Li Sao”(“Sorrow after Departure”).
During the Jian-an period at the end of the Han Dynasty, the “Three Caos” (Cao Cao, Cao Pi, and Cao Zhi) and the “Seven Jian’an Masters”(Kong Rong, Chen Lin, Wang Can, Xu Gan, Ruan Yu, Ying Xi, and Liu Zhen) sustained the realism of yuefu folksongs and wrote five-character poems. Their poems spoke to the spirit of the times and invoked an ambience of heroism and sadness.
Tao Yuanming, who led a reclusive(孤寂的) life after rejecting the life of an official, made country life the major subject of his creation and was thereby called a pastoral(田园的) poet. At a time when poems that were written in excessively ornate language and strictly imitated forms, but with empty content, dominated poetry circles, Tao Yuanming carried on the tradition of yuefu folksongs and formed his own simple and natural style, opening up a new vista(展望,前景) for classical poetry. Moreover, he further refined the forms of the five-character poem.
Chinese poetry reached its peak in the rising Tang Dynasty. Apart from the most famous Li Bai and Du Fu, many other poets also made enduring contributions in this period. Nearly one in five state schools in England offers Latin courses for 12 to 14-year-olds, according to a national survey.
Will Griffiths, the director of the Cambridge School Classics Project, said,“Peop le often talk about the decline of Latin but this shows there are huge numbers of students who want to study the subject. The issue has been one of a lack of access to Latin, rather than a lack of interest in it.”
He added,“It is great that the independent sector(部门) continues to back the subject, but 90% of children are educated in non-selective state schools and it is important that they should have the same choices.”
According to latest figures, 150 non-selective state schools began to offer Latin in 2001, compared to 471 this academic year. According to Mr. Griffiths, the subject had been offered in 118 grammars and 453 independent schools before this academic year.
Many pupils have been encouraged to take Latin because it is a “varied and rounded subjec t”, giving children a grounding in language, literature and history. Learning Latin also helps understand a range of modern languages, including French, Spanish and Italian. Mr. Griffiths added,“Many schools are offering it because of increased competition for pupils. Putting Latin on the curriculum(学校课程) or offering it as an after-school club really says something about a school.”
He warned that a lack of good Latin teachers could affect the take-up of the subject at GCSE(普通中等教育证书) in future years. According to the Times Educational Supplement, 72 Latin teachers are due to retire every year for the next five years, with only 27 new teachers being trained a year.
Boris Johnson, a candidate(候选人) for the Mayor of London and a former shadow higher education minister, said,“Above all, pupils should be given the chance to learn Latin because it is the basis for an understanding of English and the key to untold riches.

What’s the difference between mental health and mental illness? Sometimes the answer is pretty clear. But more often, the distinction between mental health and mental illness isn’t as clear-cut. If you’re afraid of giving a speech in public, does it mean you have a disease or simply a case of nerves?
Scientists, researchers and mental health experts have wrestled with this issue for hundreds of years, and even today the line between normal and abnormal is often blurred.
“What’s normal is often determined by who’s defining it. It is hard to define that whether a man is normal and it is often tied to value judgments particular to a certain culture or society. And even within cultures, concepts of normal mental health may evolve over time if societal values or expectations change. New medical research and knowledge also can lead to changes in definitions of normal mental health.
One thing that makes it so difficult to distinguish them is that there’s no easy test to show if something’s wrong. There’s no blood test or X-ray for mental disorder, for example. That’s not to say mental disorders aren’t biologically based. But for now, there’s no physiological diagnostic(诊断的) test for mental illness.
Mental health providers define mental disorders by signs, symptoms(症状) and functional impairments(损伤).
Signs, symptoms and functional impairments that mark specific mental illnesses are spelled out in detail in the DSM;a 2-inch-thick book classifies and describes more than 300 types of mental disorders. The book is used by mental health providers to diagnose everything. For instance, a mental health provider can evaluate your signs and symptoms and refer to the DSM to see which illness you might have. The first edition of the DSM was published in 1952, and revisions have been made periodically since. The most recent update was published in 2000, and it has been translated into nearly two dozen languages.
The health insurance industry uses the diagnoses spelled out in the DSM to determine coverage and benefits and to reimburse(赔偿) mental health providers. But more important is that in order to get appropriate treatment, you must know what condition to treat—and whether it needs to be treated.
51. The underlined word in the second paragraph means“_____”.

B. Mental disorders aren’t biologically based.
C. It is hard to test whether something is wrong in one’s mental world.

54. What will be written following the passage?
A. The all 300 types of mental disorders in the DSM.

While you prepare for exams, especially the national college entrance exam, take a moment to double check that pencil in your hand. And make sure you have the right one. It is not just your knowledge that determines your mark, the tools you use do as well.
A recent report shows that thousands of cheap, fake 2
B pencils have been found for sale in Beijing, Shanghai and many other cities. You may think this does not matter, but unless you buy a real 2B pencil your grade may be in doubt.
In the exam, students make small dots on their answer sheet. The scanner can only read dots made by 2B pencils. Neither darker nor lighter dots can be properly read, which means you might get a lower mark or even zero if you use the wrong pencil in the exam.
In ancient Rome, people wrote with a thin lead rod(棒). Today, the middle part of a pencil is still called the“lead”, even graphite(石墨) has been used. Graphite leaves a darker mark than lead, but it was so soft and brittle (易碎的) that it needed a holder.
So the graphite was put inside a wooden stick that had been hollowed out (掏空) by hand. And the wood cased pencil was born.
The 2B on a pencil refers to the blackness of the lead. Other pencils may use other letters, such as HB or H. These letters are from a European system, used to tell the hardness, and the blackness of a pencil. H stands for hardness and B ________. The standard writing pencil is “HB”.
The “lead” of a modern pencil is made of a mixtur e of clay(粘土) and graphite. Changing the amount of these two materials produces a range of marks with different visual effects.
56. What’s the main idea of the passage? (Please answer within 10 words.)

As is known to all, Chinese poetry, considered as a great treasure of the world literature, not only has a deep influence on our culture, but also plays an important role in our study and even in our daily life.
It is clear that these influential poems effectively express the joys and sorrows of the famous authors. What’s more, they bring us the authors’ thoughts about life and the universe, as well as love to our country. And they have become the source of our imagination and inspiration, which can help improve our writing skills and brighten our composition.
So we can see it’s very important to learn them well. We should first recite a number of the poems, just like the way children are always enjoying doing even before primary school. Then, we should compare the similarities and differences between poems and their authors. Imitating is also necessary and it is a way leading us to the magnificent hall of poetry.。
