Chinese writer Can Xue, along with Japanese author Haruki Murakami, has been reportedly named as the fourth-ranked candidate to have the highest chance of winning the prestigious Nobel Prize for Literature in 2019. Two Nobel literature laureates, instead of the usual one, will be announced on Thursday. Chinese writers like Yu Hua and Yang Lian are also on the list but rank lower.
Can, whose real name is Deng Xiaohua, was born in Changsha, Hunan in 1953. Not raised as a writer, she spent almost 20 years while being a worker, tailor and medical practitioner
Yet she never gave up on her passion, and in 1985 published her first novel Yellow Mud Street. Like her other works, it made use of symbolism. The book became known as the autobiography of her inner world. Such a work was not easily accepted or understood by Chinese readers during that period. But Can never stopped pursuing her own style.
Other representative works include Old Flouting Cloud and The Bare foot Doctor. Some have been translated in other languages, while others have been selected as textbooks at world-class universities in the US and Japan. Her novel The Last Lover has been honored with the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in US, widely considered a prelude award for the Nobel.
Sharing a stylistic similarity with Franz Kafka, Can has been called the "Chinese Kafka" by permanent Nobel Literature Committee judge and renowned sinologist Goran Malmqvist. Malmqvist even believed Can could
achieve more than Kafka, as she has already created more than 7 million words of literary composition.
Can responded she was unworthy of that level of praise, and she is just standing on Kafka's shoulders.
Though not understood by many Chinese, Can still writes in a way that combines Western and Chinese culture. But Can said many Western readers thought her works novel enough, as she praised the virtues of introducing Chinese culture to the West.
(1)When did Can Xue publish her first novel?
A: In 1953.
B: In 1973.
C: In 1985.
D: In 2019.
(2)Which of her works won a prize for literature in America?
A: Old Floating Cloud
B: The Last Lover
C: The Bare foot Doctor
D: Yellow Mud Street
(3)Why has Can Xue been called the "Chinese Kafka"?
A: Her works made use of symbolism.
B: She introduced Chinese culture to the West.
C: She won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2019.
D: Her works shared a similar style with Franz Kafka.
(4) What word can describe Can Xue best according to the text?

Iceland is known for its wonderful ice fields and it has one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights. However, in the late 1990s, Iceland was also known as a country with one of the highest numbers of teen drug abuse
(滥用毒品)in Europe. "There were large groups of teenagers getting hopelessly drunk," American researcher Harvey Milkman said.
Noticing their teenagers were out of control, the country decided to do something. With the help of researchers including Harvey Milkman, the government began a special experiment, helping teenagers stay away from drugs. The program, called Youth Iceland, tried to give teens more meaningful and enjoyable things to do. It made kids feel like they were part of something. It also encouraged parents to make time for their children and to actively take part in their lives.
The government spent millions of dollars to support new programs for sports, music, arts and dance. Low-income
(低收入的)families—who couldn't afford to sign their kids up for sports programs or art classes—were given a special card of 325 a year. This made it
possible for those parents to take part in after-class activities with their children. Besides, kids between the ages of 13 and 16 were not allowed to go outside after 10 p.m. in winter or after midnight in summer.
Today, Iceland has the lowest rate
(比率)of teen drug abuse in Europe. In 1998, before Youth Iceland, 42% of 15-and 16-year-olds reported getting drunk. Last year, that number had dropped to 5%. Those smoking cigarettes
(烟)dropped from 23% to 3%. At the same time, the percentage of those spending time with their parents on weekdays doubled, from 23% to 46%, and the percentage taking part in organized sports at least four days a week jumped from 24% to 42%.
(1)What can we infer about the problems mentioned in Paragraph 1? A: They were quite serious.
B: They were hard to notice.
C: They wore easy to deal with.
D: They were common in Europe.
(2)What's the purpose of Youth Iceland?
A: To test a new program.
B: To prevent teen drug use.
C: To win support from parents.
D: To give teens more free time.
(3)What is the use of the special card?
A: To help poor families live a better life.
B: To encourage poor families to do after-class activities.
C: To make sure kids feel like they were part of something.
D: To provide kids from poor families with formal education.
(4)What do the numbers in the last paragraph show?
A: The program proves to be a success.
B: It is important to help teens develop good habits.
C: Teens in Iceland are well under control nowadays.
D: The problem of teen drug abuse in Iceland is serious.
However, in the late 1990s, Iceland was also known as a country with one of the highest numbers of teen drug abuse
(滥用毒品)in Europe. "There were large groups of teenagers getting hopelessly drunk," American researcher Harvey Milkman said.
With the help of researchers including Harvey Milkman, the government began a special experiment, helping teenagers stay away from drugs. The program, called Youth Iceland, tried to give teens more meaningful and enjoyable things to do.
Low-income
(低收入的)families—who couldn't afford to sign their kids up for sports programs or art classes—were given a special card of 325 a year. This made it possible for those parents to take part in after-class activities with their children.
Researchers may have found a way to keep plants from dying of thirst. They developed a soil additive
It will steal water from the air to share with plants.
Their invention is a super-moisture-absorbent gel
It absorbs water from the air during the night. When the sun warms it the next day, that gel releases its accumulated water into the root zone of the plants.
Guihua Yu, an engineer at the University of Texas at Austin, led the team that developed the gel. The gel mixed with soil absorbs water and holds it. The next day, rather than allowing it to evaporate
(蒸发), the gel instead slowly releases that water into the soil.
The engineers tested the soil additive to grow carrots. During an experiment, they compared carrots grown in sandy soil alone with carrots grown in sandy soil that had been mixed with the gel. The gel-treated soil lost about 60 percent of the water after about a month. In contrast, the untreated soil lost 80 percent of its water in just one week.
Jeff Hattey is a soil scientist. He says similar additives have been used in potting soil for many years. He says the gel works in a similar way. "The big questions for me are, first, how much SMAG-soil would you have to use? How long does it last once it's in the soil?"
Yu believes future studies will help his team understand if the gel could be used for larger, outdoor fields. If it can, the water in the air could allow crops to be grown in dryer climates, where irrigation is not practical. It shouldn't hurt the bacteria or worms that are needed to keep soil healthy for growing things. The gel also should pose no risks if it washes into lakes or streams. The research team hopes to confirm that in the near future.
(1)How does SMAG get water?
A: By absorbing water from the root zone.
B: By absorbing water from air.
C: By absorbing water from plants.
D: By absorbing water from soil.
(2)What can we infer from Hattey's words?
A: The SMAG is a totally new invention.
B: People will use SMAG-soil soon.
C: Scientists have to do more for SMAG.
D: SMAG has a lot of advantages.
(3)What will Guihua Yu probably do in the near future?
A: Let SMAG have fewer side effects on soil.
B: Prove whether SMAG is safe to environment.
C: Make SMAG keep soil healthy.
D: Make SMAG acceptable by people.
(4)What may be the suitable title for the text?
A: An invention of making plants grow in a dry climate
B: An invention of making plants grow quickly
C: An invention of defeating droughts
D: An invention of protecting the soil

The gel also should pose no risks if it washes into lakes or streams. The research team hopes to confirm that in the near future.

(4)on', '
(5)glorious', '
(6)retirement', '
(7)to show', '
(8)whether', '
(9)Looking', '
(10)have changed'
故填a。
(2)unbelievably

(10)have changed
(have/has)+过去分词。
主语 this man and the number 23 player of the Chicago Bulls为复数概念,故助动词用复数形式have, change用其过去分词形式changed。

Wylie lived in Scotland, far up on the hills, and helped her master take care of his sheep.
Wylie watched over the sheep and the little lambs like a soldier, and never let anything hurt them. She drove them out to pasture(牧场)when it was
time, and brought them safely home when it was time for that. She loved her work, and was a wonderfully fine sheepdog.
At last her master grew too old to stay alone on the hills. Before he left, he gave Wylie to two kind young men who lived in the nearest town; he knew they would be good to her. They grew very fond of her, and so did their old grandmother and the little children; she was so gentle and handsome and well behaved.
But after a while, the family noticed something very strange indeed about their dog. Every single Tuesday night, about nine o'clock, Wylie disappeared. And she would be gone all night. But every Wednesday morning, she was at the door, waiting to be let in. Her silky coat was all sweaty and muddy and her feet heavy with weariness(疲惫), but her bright eyes looked up at her masters as if she were trying to explain where she had been.
Week after week, the same thing happened. Nobody could imagine where Wylie went every Tuesday night. They tried to follow her to find out, but she always slipped away. It grew to be a real mystery. Where in the world did Wylie go?
In the city near the town where the kind young men lived was a big market. On Tuesday nights, the farmers used to come down from the hills, and drive their sheep through the city streets into the pens, ready to sell on Wednesday morning; that was the day they sold them. The sheep weren't used to the city noises and sights, and they always grew afraid and wild, and gave the farmers and the sheepdogs a great deal of trouble. They broke away and ran about, in everybody's way.

One day, Wylie went to walk with her two masters. ________
But just as the trouble was worst, about sunrise, the farmers would see a little silky dog come running. In and out the little dog ran like the wind, round and about, always in the right place, driving the sheep mind like a good school-teacher and never frightening them, till they were all safely in! All the other dogs together could not do as much as the little strange dog. As soon as her work was done, she was off and away like a fairy dog. Week after week, this happened and nobody knew who the little strange dog was.
One day, Wylie went to walk with her two masters. They happened to meet some sheep farmers. The farmers stopped short and stared at Wylie, and then they cried out, "Why, that's the dog!" And so it was. The little strange dog who helped with the sheep was Wylie. Her masters, of course, didn't know what the farmers meant till they were told all. But when hearing about the pretty strange dog, who came to market alone, they knew at last where Wylie went every Tuesday night. And they loved her better than ever.
