immortality by the Queen Mother of the West. However, Hou Yi did not wish to ascend to heaven without his beloved wife, Chang'e, and so he entrusted the elixir to her.
The narrative takes a dramatic turn when a student of Hou Yi, Peng Meng, learns of the elixir and attempts to steal it. In order to prevent the elixir from falling into the wrong hands, Chang'e makes the ultimate sacrifice and consumes it herself. The elixir grants her immortality, but it also causes her to float away, eventually settling on the moon.
