Dear Michael,
Greetings from Beijing! How are you doing? I hope you're having a fantastic time. I can't wait to tell you all about the exciting plans I have for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration. As you know, the Chinese New Year is one of the most important festivals in China, and it's a time when families come together to celebrate and enjoy each other's company.
This year, the Chinese New Year falls on January 22nd, and it's going to be the Year of the Rabbit. Can you believe it? The rabbit is a symbol of longevity, peace, and prosperity in Chinese culture. Isn't that amazing? I'm so excited about all the festivities and traditions that come with this special occasion.
First of all, let me tell you about the preparations we're making at home. My mom has been busy cleaning every nook and cranny of our house. She says it's important to start the new year with a clean and tidy home, as it represents a fresh start and getting rid of any bad luck from the previous year. My dad, on
the other hand, has been busy decorating our house with red lanterns, couplets, and other auspicious decorations. Did you know that the color red symbolizes good luck and happiness in Chinese culture? It's like a magical color that's supposed to ward off evil spirits and bring us fortune.
But the best part is yet to come! My favorite tradition is the buying of new clothes for the Chinese New Year. My parents always take me shopping for a brand new outfit to wear during the celebrations. This year, I have my eye on a beautiful red dress with golden embroidery. It's so pretty, and I can't wait to twirl around in it while we visit our relatives and friends.
Speaking of visiting, I want to invite you to come to China and celebrate the Chinese New Year with us! Imagine all the fun we could have together. We could watch the spectacular fireworks displays, which are a big part of the celebrations. The night sky will be lit up with vibrant colors and thunderous booms as people welcome the new year with joy and excitement.
We could also participate in the tradition of giving out red envelopes filled with money. It's a way for elders to bless the younger generation with good luck and prosperity for the coming year. Oh, and let's not forget about the delicious food! During the Chinese New Year, we'll get to feast on all kinds of
mouth-watering dishes, like dumplings, noodles, and sweet rice balls. My favorite is the sticky rice cake, which is a symbol of rising fortunes and family unity.
But wait, there's more! We could visit the famous Ditan Park in Beijing, where people gather to fly kites and enjoy the festive atmosphere. It's a beautiful sight to see the sky filled with colorful kites of all shapes and sizes. And if we're lucky, we might even catch a glimpse of the traditional lion and dragon dances that are performed to bring good luck and chase away evil spirits.
Imagine how much fun it would be to experience all these wonderful traditions together! We could make unforgettable memories and learn so much about Chinese culture and history. Plus, it would be an excellent opportunity for you to practice your Chinese language skills. You could impress my family with your knowledge and show them how dedicated you are to learning about our customs.
So, what do you say, Michael? Are you ready to embark on this exciting adventure with me? I promise it will be an experience like no other. Just picture us laughing, playing, and enjoying the warmth of family and friends during this joyous occasion.
Please let me know if you can come, and we'll start making all the necessary arrangements. I can't wait to hear from you!

Dear Susan,
How are you doing? I hope you're having a great time at school and enjoying the cold winter days. I'm writing to you because I have some really exciting news to share! The Chinese New Year is coming up very soon, and I would love for you to come and celebrate it with me and my family in China!
I'm sure you've heard about the Chinese New Year before, but let me tell you all about it. It's the most important festival in Chinese culture, and it's celebrated for almost two whole weeks! Can you imagine having that many days off from school? It's like an extra-long summer vacation, but in the middle of winter.
The best part about Chinese New Year is all the amazing traditions we get to take part in. First of all, there's the decorations. My mom and I always have so much fun putting up red lanterns, hanging up banners with special phrases written on
them, and sticking up pictures of the zodiac animal for that year. This year is the Year of the Rabbit, so we'll be decorating with lots of cute bunnies!
Then there's the food. Oh my, the food! My grandma makes the most delicious dumplings, and we eat so many of them during the New Year celebrations. There's also a special cake called nian gao, which is made of sticky rice and is supposed to bring good luck for the new year. And of course, we can't forget about the candies and chocolates! My favorite is the chocolate coins wrapped in red and gold foil.
But the best tradition of all is the red envelopes! On New Year's Eve, all the kids in the family get special red envelopes filled with money from the adults. It's supposed to bring us good luck and prosperity for the coming year. Last year, my uncle gave me a whole twenty dollars in my red envelope! I was so excited, I thought I was the richest kid in the world.
Another fun thing we do is watch the New Year's Gala on TV. It's this huge variety show with singing, dancing, comedy skits, and all sorts of amazing performances. My whole family gathers around the TV and watches it together while snacking on sunflower seeds and melon seeds. It's such a cozy and happy time.
It's such a magical time, Susan, and I really want you to experience it with me and my family. Imagine all the fun we could have together! We could help my grandma make dumplings, play with sparklers and firecrackers (don't worry, my parents will supervise us), and stay up late watching the Gala together.
Plus, you could see all the amazing sights and sounds of China during the New Year celebrations. The streets are always so colorful and lively, with dragon dances, lion dances, and beautiful light displays everywhere you look. And at night, the sky is lit up with thousands of lanterns and fireworks!
So what do you say, Susan? Will you come to China and celebrate the Chinese New Year with me and my family? It would mean so much to me to have my best friend here to share in all the joy and festivities. I promise you'll have the time of your life and make memories that will last forever.
Let me know as soon as you can, okay? I'll help my parents book your plane ticket and get everything ready for your visit. I can't wait to show you around and introduce you to all my relatives!

Title: An Invitation to Celebrate Chinese New Year in China
Dear Jessica,
How are you doing? I hope you and your family are doing great! I'm writing to you today because I have something really exciting to share. You know how much I love the Chinese New Year celebration, right? Well, this year, I would like to invite you to come to China and experience the most amazing festival with me and my family!
Chinese New Year is the biggest and most important celebration in Chinese culture. It's like Christmas, New Year's Eve, and your birthday all rolled into one giant party that lasts for two whole weeks! Can you imagine how much fun that would be? We Chinese people call it the Spring Festival because it marks the beginning of spring according to the traditional Chinese calendar.
Let me tell you all about the incredible things we do during this special time. First of all, there's the cleaning! My mom always makes me help her clean every corner of our house before the
new year arrives. She says it's important to sweep away all the bad luck from the old year and make room for good fortune in the new year. It's a lot of hard work, but it's also kind of fun because we get to declutter and make our home look brand new!
Then, there's the decorating! We put up red lanterns, hang up red scrolls with lucky phrases written on them, and stick red couplets on our doors and windows. Red is the luckiest color in Chinese culture, and it's supposed to scare away any evil spirits. My favorite part is making paper cuts – those intricate red designs that we paste on our windows. They're so beautiful and delicate!
But the best part of Chinese New Year is definitely the food! My grandma always makes the most delicious dumplings, and we have a big family reunion dinner on New Year's Eve. We eat all sorts of lucky foods like fish (because the Chinese word for fish sounds like the word for "surplus"), dumplings (because they look like ancient Chinese money), and noodles (which represent longevity). It's a feast like no other, and we always end up feeling so stuffed but so happy!
After the big meal, we kids get to stay up late and set off firecrackers and fireworks to scare away any lingering evil spirits.
It's so loud and exciting, and the night sky lights up with brilliant colors. Sometimes, we even get to watch amazing lion and dragon dances performed by skilled dancers in colorful costumes. It's like nothing you've ever seen before!
The next day, we wake up early and put on our brand new clothes (it's supposed to bring good luck for the new year). Then, we give each other red envelopes filled with money – it's called "hongbao" in Chinese. The kids always look forward to this part because we get to collect lots of cash from our parents and grandparents!
For the next two weeks, we visit relatives and friends, eat more delicious food, watch traditional performances, and just have a grand old time. It's like one big party that never ends!
So, what do you say, Jessica? Would you like to come to China and join in the fun? I promise you'll have the time of your life! We can stay up late, eat lots of yummy food, and make unforgettable memories together. Plus, you'll get to experience the rich culture and traditions of the Chinese people firsthand.
Just let me know if you can come, and we'll make all the arrangements. I can't wait to show you around and introduce you to the wonderful world of Chinese New Year!

Dear Jenny,
How are you? I'm so excited for the upcoming Chinese New Year holidays! It's one of my favorite times of the year here in China. There are so many fun traditions and celebrations that I want to tell you all about. I really hope you can come visit my family and me during the break so you can experience it yourself!
Chinese New Year is also called the Spring Festival. It marks the beginning of a new year on the Chinese lunar calendar. This year it falls on January 22nd. The celebrations actually start on New Year's Eve and continue for about 2 weeks until the Lantern Festival. My whole family gets together on New Year's Eve for a huge feast called the reunion dinner. We make lots of delicious dishes like dumplings, noodles, fish, and special New Year's cake. My grandma always cooks her amazing soup with lucky vegetables like black moss and dried oysters. After dinner, we watch the New Year's Gala show on TV. It has singers, dancers,
magic acts, and comedy sketchers. We try to stay up all night to welcome the new year!
On New Year's Day, we wake up early and put on brand new clothes and shoes for good luck. I love getting new red clothes and shoes for the holiday. The color red is very important for Chinese New Year because it symbolizes happiness, wealth, and prosperity. We also make sure our whole house is cleaned from top to bottom before the new year to sweep away any bad luck from the old year. Then my parents give me and my little sister red envelopes with money inside called hongbao. I always feel so lucky!
One of the best parts is all the fireworks and firecrackers we set off. The loud popping sounds are supposed to scare away evil spirits and bring good fortune. I love watching and hearing all the colorful fireworks lighting up the sky at night. It looks so magical and festive! We hang up lanterns, spring couplets with good luck sayings, and decorations of the zodiac animal for that year. This year is the Year of the Rabbit, so we'll have lots of cute rabbit decorations up.
During the two-week celebration, we visit with all our relatives and friends. You would get to meet my aunts, uncles, and cousins. Everyone gives the kids more lucky money in red
envelopes. We also get to stay up late watching shows and films on TV during the holiday. Sometimes my cousins and I will go out in the neighborhood and set off some little firecrackers together (with our parents watching for safety of course!)
On the 15th day of the new year, we celebrate the Lantern Festival. We'll go to the park or temple to see all the colorful lantern displays and shows. Some places have huge lanterns in the shapes of dragons or other animals. There are also lantern riddles hanging up that we try to solve. If you get one right, you win a little prize! At the end of the night, we light our own little lantern and make a wish before letting it float up into the night sky. It's so pretty to see hundreds of lantern lights drifting in the air.
There are so many other little traditions too - like eating certain lucky foods, giving gifts of fruit, staying up late playing card games or board games with the family, and more. It's just such a fun, festive time celebrating the new year with loved ones here in China. I really hope you and your family can come visit us during the holiday! You would get to experience all the cool traditions, decorations, performances, foods, and festivities. And of course my parents would be so happy to host you and show
you around our city. Just let me know if you can make it - I can't wait to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit with my best friend!
