University English is an important subject in college education, which aims to improve students' comprehensive English language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Over the past semester, I have learned a lot and made significant progress in my English learning journey.
In terms of listening skills, I have become more proficient in understanding English conversations and lectures. Through regular practice and exposure to various listening materials, such as TED talks, podcasts, and news broadcasts, I have gradually developed the ability to comprehend English spoken at normal speed. Additionally, I have enhanced my note-taking skills, allowing me to capture key points and important details while listening. This skill has proven to be useful not only in my English class but also in other subjects that require listening comprehension.
Speaking English fluently has always been a challenge for me, but with constant practice and deliberate efforts, I have seen improvement. In the classroom, we often engage in group discussions and presentations, which allow us to practice our speaking skills in a supportive environment. These activities have boosted my confidence in expressing my opinions and ideas in English. Moreover, our teacher frequently arranged speaking tasks that simulate real-life situations, such as job interviews or debates, which further enhanced our ability to communicate effectively in English.
Reading is another vital aspect of English learning. Through the assigned readings and extracurricular materials, I have expanded
my vocabulary and improved my reading comprehension skills. The wide range of reading materials, including academic articles, short stories, and essays, have exposed me to various writing styles and perspectives. Additionally, I have learned different reading strategies, such as skimming and scanning, to quickly grasp the main ideas of a text and locate specific information.
Writing essays and reports have been an integral part of my English class. Through continuous practice, I have developed a structured approach to writing, which includes prewriting, outlining, drafting, revising, and editing. I have also learned to incorporate relevant evidence and examples to support my arguments and make my writing more persuasive.
