Mom was an excellent gardener. Everything she touched grew well. Especially the rose bushes, which were said to be given by her great-grandmother, in her front yard —huge fragrant flowers were the envy of neighbors. My sister Mary Beth, and I, on the other hand, didn't know anything about gardening. But early one spring morning, there we stood in our mother's front yard, with shovels (铁铲), preparing to move Mom's beloved roses. Mom had passed away three months earlier and we were getting her house ready for sale. We wanted to transplant (移种) Mom's roses to our homes as a memorial (纪念物) to her. "How do we move these roses without killing them?" Mary Beth asked.
"I have no idea," I said. There wasn't a soul around to help us. Should we pull them from the ground or try and dig around them? "Mom would tell us exactly how to do this," I said, feeling her loss more than ever.
All at once we were shocked by a voice behind us. "Are you digging up those beautiful rose bushes?" I turned and saw a handsome young man holding a shovel. "Yes,"
I said.
The man nodded. "I'll tell you just what to do," he began, "Preserve as much of the root system as possible." He showed us where we should dig. Then he described how to fertilize the soil, the proper watering schedule once we planted them at our homes. "How do you know all this?" my sister asked. "I was once a gardener at the Denver Botanical Garciens." The man answered a few more questions and I thanked him.
I was just about to do what he suggested when I realized I'd forgotten to get his name, in case we needed more help. I stood and looked up and down the street. He was gone, disappearing suddenly. It couldn't have been more than a few seconds.
I wondered whether he had been sent by Mom's soul to give us the heaven-sent advice. Because of his help, Mom's beautiful roses come out in our yards every summer.
21. How did the author and her sister feel when they decided to transplant Mom's roses?
A. Delighted.
B. Relaxed.
C. Depressed.
D. Confused.
22 Why did the author and her sister want to move these roses to their homes?
A. They had sold their mother's house to the young man.
B. They wanted to learn something about planting roses.
C. They wanted to keep their mom's roses as a memorial.
D. Their mother had told them not to leave roses to others.
23. We can learn from the text that
A. the handsome young man was a gardener at the city's park
B. the author was puzzled over the young man's disappearing
C. the young man planted the roses for the author and her sister
D. the author and her sister knew a little about gardening at first

Whether we should allow marine (海洋的) parks to stay open has been widely debated in our community recently. A variety of different arguments have been put forward about it.
Smith, a sociologist, argued that dolphin parks provide the only opportunity for much of the public to see marine mammals. As this argument goes, most Australians live in cities and never get to see these animals. Marine parks allow the average Australian to appreciate our marine wildlife. However, in fact, there are many places where they can be seen in the wild. Moreover, these places do not charge an overpriced entry fee — they are free.
Dr Alison Lane, the director of the Cairns Marine Science Institute, insists that we need marine parks for scientific research. She argues that much of our knowledge of marine mammals comes from studies which were undertaken (进行) at marine parks. The knowledge which is obtained (获得) at marine parks can be useful for planning for the preservation of marine mammal species. However, Jones, a zoologist, explains that park research is only useful for understanding captive (被猎获的) animals and is not useful for learning about animals in the wild. Their diets are different, they have significantly lower life lengths and they are more likely to have a disease. In addition, marine mammals in dolphin parks are trained and this means that their patterns of social behavior are changed.
The Marine Park Owners Association holds that marine parks attract a lot of
foreign tourists. This position goes on to state that these tourists spend a lot
of money, increasing our foreign exchange income and assisting our national balance
of payments. However, foreign tourists would still come to Australia if the parks
were closed down. Indeed, surveys of overseas tourists show that they come here for
a variety of other reasons and not to visit places like Sea World. Tourists come
here to see our native wildlife in its natural environment and not to see it in cages
and concrete pools. They can see animals in those conditions in their own countries.
In conclusion, perhaps an agreement cannot be reached now. However, a question
does deserve our consideration if we continue with our past crimes against these
creatures, how will our future generations view us?
24. Who support(s) the idea of closing marine parks?
A. Most Australians.
B. Alison Lane.
C. Smith.
D.
Jones.
25. What does the author intend to tell us in Para. 3?
A. The results from studies are valuable in animal preservation.
B. Scientific research at the marine parks has its limitations.
C. Captive animals have biology changes in marine parks.
D. Human behavior causes harmful effects on the animals.
26. All of the following are the reasons to keep marine parks except .
A. for scientific research purpose
B. for entertainment
purpose
C. for economic purpose
D. for political purpose
27. The author tries to persuade readers to accept his argument mainly by ________.
A. pointing out the problems with keeping the marine parks
B. discussing the advantages of animals' natural homes
C. using evidence he has collected at the marine parks
D. questioning the way the animals are studied

For years, drugs have been one of the major destroyers of people's lives, as well
as their families. People who do drugs might not even realize that what they're doing
has changed the lives of not only themselves, but of the people close to them in
their lives.
People who do drugs have usually become addicted because of the fact that the y’v e used drugs for years and have always used drugs to deal with their problems. Finally, they have no other way to deal with their problems and use other drugs to eliminate the feelings caused by other life problems.
There are several ways to get rid of drug addiction. The first step, as I'm sure you have heard hundreds of times, is to realize that there's a problem. If someone in your life has been doing drugs, you'll need to let him know that it's not just harmful to him.
Once you've gotten them to realize this, if possible, you'll need to find help for them. You'll need a way to work out the problems in life that drag them towards drugs, or to create something else that will keep these people away from drugs. Sometimes other addictions are in line. For example, most heavy drinkers suffer from depression. Over 40% of Americans suffer from depression, and over 60% of the male population of these people have turned towards drinking to deal with their problems connected with depression. This greatly increases the chances of spousal (配偶的) and child abuse(虐待), as well as many other horrible effects of alcohol. When someone becomes addicted to drugs, you need to deal with it immediately. Help him get rid of the problem before it turns into one which cannot be controlled.
28. The text is mainly about .
A. why Americans suffer from depression and how to help them get over it
B. the bad effects of taking drugs and how to help a drug addict
C. the number one destroyer of people's lives
D. the family life of those who take drugs
29. According to the text, why do some people become addicted to drugs?
A. They want to keep on being excited.
B. They want to try something different.
C. Their friends persuade them to do drugs.
D. They get used to dealing with problems with drugs.
30. What can you do to help your friend get rid of drug addiction?
A. Ask police for help.
B. Tell him it's harmful.
C. Take drugs away from him.
D. Try to know about his family.
31. Why have some American men become addicted to drinking according to the text?
A. They don't love their wives.
B. They are too busy to relax.
C. They suffer from depression.
D. Their children won't listen to them.
D
Electric cars are dirty. In fact, not only are they dirty, they might even be dirtier than their gasoline-powered ( 以汽油为动力的) cousins.
People in California love to talk about "zero-emissions (零排放的) vehicles," but people in California seem to be clueless about where electricity comes from. Power plants mostly all use fire to make it. Aside from the few folks who have their roofs covered with solar cells, we get our electricity from generators (发电机). Generators are fueled by something — usually coal, oil, but also by heat generated in nuclear power plants(核电站). There are a few wind farms as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning something.
In other words, those "zero-emissions" cars are likely coal-burning cars. It's just that the coal is burned somewhere else so it looks clean. It is not. It's as if the California Greens are covering their eyes — "If l can't see it, it's not happening." Gasoline is an efficient way to power a vehicle; a gallon of gas has a lot of energy in it. But when you take that gas (or another fuel) and first use it to make electricity, you waste a nice part of that energy, mostly in the form of wasted heat — at the generator, through the transmission (传输) lines, etc.
A gallon of gas may power your car 25 miles. But the electricity you get from that gallon of gas won't get you nearly as far — so electric cars burn more fuel than gas-powered ones. If our electricity came directly from solar, wind or other natural resources, then an electric car truly would be clean. But for political, technical, and economic reasons, we don't use much of those energy sources.
In addition, electric cars' batteries which are poisonous for a long time will eventually end up in a landfill (垃圾填筑地). And finally, when cars are the polluters, the pollution is spread across all the roads. When it's a power plant, though, all the junk is in one place. Nature is very good at cleaning up when things are not too concentrated, but it takes a lot longer when all the garbage is in one spot.
32. What is the main idea of this text?
A. Electric cars aren't actually clean.
B. Zero-emission vehicles are popular.
C. Electric cars are zero-mission vehicles.
D. Gasoline-powered cars are more effective.
33. Which can replace the underlined phrase "be clueless about" in Para. 2?
A. Show interest in.
B. Be familiar with.
C. Be curious about.
D. Fail to understand.
34. The electricity we get from a gallon of gas may make our car run
A. at least 25 miles
B. as far as 25 miles
C. less than 25 miles
D. more than 25 miles
35. According to the text, compared with cars using gas, electric cars are more _________.
A. efficient
B. harmful
C. expensive
D. environmentally-friendly

Take it easy on your teachers. Teachers are like students: some are great, some are less than great. But teachers are in charge of the classroom. So even if you're feeling bored in class, you should be nice to your teachers. 39 .

Last Saturday I went to the library as usually. At about noon, I was enjoying my reading near a lake while suddenly I heard someone crying for help. I went up to see which was happening. I was shocking to find a little child struggling in the water in a distance while many people were standing by without doing anything. Without any hesitation, I had pushed through the crowd as I took off my coat but jumped into the water quickly. I managed to reach him and carried him back to safety. 书面表达
Dear fellow students,
As everybody can see, some resources are being wasted in our school. The lights are on during the day in some classrooms. Water taps are left running after washing. In the canteen, some students throw away he food just because they don’t like it.
I think it is high time that we should stop wasting and live a low-carbon life because many people go hungry and energy crisis is getting worse in the world. So I m ake the following suggestions: First, let’s turn off the lights and the water taps when we don’t use them. Second, we’d better eat up the food we buy. Last but not least, we should form the habit of recycling waste.
Dear friends, it we take action now, we can make a big difference to the whole world.
