When I was a little girl, I remember when my dad was doing housework, he would ask me to help around, so we could have time for a talk. I never saw my dad drinking or taking a night out. All he did after work was taking care of our family.
I grew up and left home for college and since then, my dad had been calling me every Sunday. And when I bought a house several years later, my dad painted it by himself in the summer heat. All he asked was to talk to him, but I was too busy in those days.
Four years ago, my dad visited me. He spent many hours putting up a swing for my daughter. He asked me to have a talk with him, but I had to prepare for a trip that weekend. During the trip, I received a call. My father was in the hospital. I bought a plane ticket at once. And on my way I was thinking about all the chances I missed to have a talk with my dad. Before I arrived at the hospital, my father had passed away. Now it was he who didn't have time for a talk with me.

Last year, I went to Beijing Qizhi Special Education School for community service(社区服务). Before we took the bus, my friend asked me a question: “Why are you here?” I did not know how to answer the question.
The school was not far from my school, but it looked like it was in a different world. A group of children were waiting for us. A boy walked toward me. He held my hands and pulled me to the ground. I kissed the earth and tasted nature. I could not understand what he was doing at first, so I was very angry. Though I was very angry, I controlled
my anger.
A teacher stopped this awkward(尴尬的)silence when she shouted at the boy. “What are you doing right here, right now?” she said. “You will never see your mom again if you keep doing this. Now, say sorry!” “Sorry,” he cried fearfully and nervously. I said nothing, but I realized something about this child. After lunch I asked the teacher for information about the child's parents.
She said that the child was very different from other students because of an illness. His family could not afford to treat him. He needed the kindness of his family, but they abandoned him. So he depended on the support from the teachers and community service workers like us. I suddenly realized I could answer the question my friend asked me at the beginning of the day.
Community service workers help others and make everyone feel better. There are so many people in the world that need help. Playing with lonely children may not make a big difference. But it can light a corner in the children's hearts, making them know they are loved by people.

We all want to do things well. For example, as students all of us want to have a good performance in study and get good grades. However, growing up also includes accepting when things go wrong. In fact, mistakes can lead to some of the most interesting and meaningful results.
Aiming for good results can help you focus on your goals, but it's also important to focus on enjoying the process. Getting too hung up on whether things go as planned can put a lot of pressure on you and lead to worry. That's why it's good to leave some room for mistakes and imperfections.
Dr. Rekha Vara is a doctor who helps people with their mental health (心理健康). She says getting things wrong is part of growing up. “We also have to experience the uncomfortable feeling when we get things wrong. This helps us to become stronger,” says Dr. Vara. “Or we’ll be too scared to make mistakes. This fear can lead us to put off doing difficult things or avoid trying new things.”
Learning from your mistakes is necessary during growing up. The most important thing is what you choose to do next. Try not to take it too seriously, blame(责备)yourself or feel too disappointed or upset. Dr. Vara explains, “Remember you’re a common man. Humans make mistakes.” _________, but these feelings will soon pass and then you'll feel happier.
Instead, thinking about what you might do differently next time helps a lot. In one study, if students were reminded to forgive(宽恕)and be kind to themselves when they failed a test, they felt more encouraged to try again, while other students were less pleased to have a second try.
16. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. 执迷
B. 懊悔
C. 遗憾
D. 忽略
17. Which of the following would Dr. Vara agree with?
A. Fear leads us to try new things.
B. Failure is normal in growing up.
C. Good results make us stronger.
D. People hardly ever get things wrong.
18. “Which of the following can be put in“_________” in Paragraph 4?
A. Everyone will grow up
B. Process is really important
C. You should enjoy your feelings
D. You might feel uncomfortable at first
19. How does the writer support his idea in the last paragraph?
A. By telling stories.
B. By giving an example.
C. By listing numbers.
D. By describing a problem.
20. What's the best title for the passage?
A. Stick to Your Goals
B. Avoid Making Mistakes

No food other than hot pot can show how much Chinese people like to get together to enjoy happiness.
Hot pot has a long history. It's the most popular kind of food in China. There are about350 000 hot pot restaurants around the country, the largest number of any kind of restaurant.
While enjoying a hot pot meal, people sit around a table and eat from a steaming pot. They can add nearly anything to the hot pot soup, such as meat, seafood, vegetables, tofu and so on. Meat is often cut as thin as paper, so it should not be cooked too long. Otherwise, it will lose its tenderness(鲜嫩).
People are free to choose the type of hot pot they like: spicy, mushroom and tomato. Usually a hot pot has two parts inside. One side is spicy, while the other side is not so spicy. So everyone can enjoy eating it.
You don't have to master great cooking skills to enjoy hot pot either. When the food is ready, take it out and put it in different sauces to give it a special flavor. Some also drink the soup from the pot.
Enjoying hot pot is about more than just eating. While the pot cooks, people talk and drink. Unlike some meals, it creates an atmosphere(气氛)where everyone can just relax. No wonder hot pot restaurants have become a favorite reunion spot for friends and family in China.

参考范文Dear Peter,
I'm glad to hear from you. It's been a year since I wrote to you last time. I have also changed a lot. Now I’m tall and strong. The biggest change for me is that my English has improved so much. I think the best way to learn English is watching English movies. It not only helps me practice my listening and speaking ability, but also helps me learn a lot about western culture.
Knowing that you’re interested in Chinese traditional festival. Now I will introduce the Mid- Autumn Festival to you. It falls on August 15th of Chinese lunar calendar. All the family members get together for a big dinner that day. We usually eat mooncakes while admiring the moon at night. I hope you can celebrate the Mid- Autumn Festival with us next year if you are available.
I hope my reply is helpful to you. Looking forward to seeing you in China.
Yours,
Li Ping。
